Abandoned Newborn Dies in Hospital, Mother Identified

Surat : A newborn baby girl who was abandoned outside an orphanage in Surat on Monday has tragically died in the hospital. Police have identified the mother as a 16-year-old girl from Maharashtra who gave birth at a private nursing home.

The baby was found wrapped in a cloth outside the Katargam Mahajan Orphan Children's Home, covered in ant bites and crying. A passerby alerted emergency services, and the baby was rushed to the New Civil Hospital in critical condition. Despite receiving treatment, the infant died on Tuesday.

Following the incident, Katargam police reviewed CCTV footage and identified a rickshaw driver who had dropped off the baby. Through the driver's information, police were able to trace the mother, who admitted to abandoning her newborn due to fear of societal stigma surrounding her unmarried pregnancy.

The investigation is ongoing, with police questioning the mother, her parents, the rickshaw driver, and the doctor and nurse from the delivery facility. Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code, which pertains to culpable homicide not amounting to murder, has been registered in the case.
