New Delhi, 26 February - President Draupadi Murmu graced the 107th Annual Day and Convocation of Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC) in New Delhi on Monday, delivering a keynote address that underscored the expanding horizons of medical science and the ethical responsibilities of medical practitioners.
Addressing the audience, President Murmu noted that contemporary medical science transcends mere treatment, encompassing a broad spectrum of knowledge and services. Referencing Mahatma Gandhi's view that knowledge without character and science without humanity is sinful, President Murmu urged doctors to prioritize service over financial gain.
President Murmu highlighted the impact of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which is narrowing the gap between physical, digital, and biological realms. He cited advancements in synthetic biology and technologies like CRISPR gene editing as promising avenues for addressing long-standing challenges.
Expressing confidence in the medical fraternity's commitment to ethics and values, President Murmu urged for an integrated approach to healthcare, emphasizing 'One Health'. He reminded doctors of the public's perception of them as akin to gods, stressing the moral imperative for doctors to uphold high standards of behavior.
LHMC, renowned for its medical services, has made significant strides in healthcare. It is registered as an Organ Transplant Recovery Centre and has initiated a comprehensive antibiotic stewardship program to combat antimicrobial resistance. Additionally, LHMC collaborates with other institutions on the IDRON initiative for blood bag delivery.
Furthermore, LHMC has established the National Human Milk Bank and Breastfeeding Counseling Center 'Vatsalya - Matri Amrit Kosh' with support from the Government of Norway. President Murmu expressed confidence that this center would raise awareness about breastfeeding and reduce infant mortality rates.
President Murmu's address resonated with the audience, emphasizing the importance of ethics and service in the medical profession, setting a tone for the future of healthcare in India.
