Good Sleep Linked to Longer Lifespan, Study Finds
Chennai, Feb 26 : Prioritizing good sleep may not just leave you feeling refreshed, it could contribute to a longer life, according to new research. The study, conducted jointly by the American College of Cardiology and the World Congress of Cardiology, found that healthy sleep habits are associated with a lower risk of death and can play a vital role in overall health and longevity.
The research, presented at the upcoming 27th Congress of the European Sleep Research Society, analyzed data from over 170,000 individuals. It revealed that those with good sleep patterns had a significantly reduced risk of death compared to those with poor sleep habits. Additionally, the study estimated that approximately 8% of all-cause deaths could be linked to insufficient sleep.
"Our study highlights the importance of both a healthy diet and good quality sleep," explained Dr. Frank Qian, a lead researcher on the project. "Adequate sleep helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, which can significantly impact mortality rates."
The findings further emphasize the connection between sleep and heart health. Previous research has shown that both insufficient and excessive sleep can negatively impact cardiovascular function. Sleep disorders like insomnia and sleep apnea, which can disrupt breathing patterns during sleep, have also been linked to increased risks of high blood pressure, heart arrhythmias, and heart attacks.
With growing evidence highlighting the vital role of sleep in promoting long-term health, the upcoming Sleep Europe-2024 congress in Spain aims to foster further global research on sleep's significance in human well-being and lifespan.
