Runaway Train: Driver Error Halted After Alarming Journey
Chandigarh, February 25: A major incident was averted in Punjab on Sunday after a goods train ran for over 130 kilometers without a driver or guard. The runaway train, identified as 14806 R, originated in Kathua, Jammu and Kashmir, and reached Hoshiarpur, Punjab before being brought to a halt. Thankfully, no injuries or damage were reported.
Driver's Negligence Blamed:
Investigation revealed a critical human error behind the incident. The driver, who started the engine at Kathua station, reportedly failed to apply the handbrake before stepping out. As the station has a slight slope towards Pathankot, the train began rolling freely.
Frantic Efforts to Stop the Train:
Railway officials at Kathua scrambled to stop the train but were unsuccessful. As the train gained speed, reaching an estimated 80 kmph, attempts were made to halt it at six subsequent stations: Sujanpur, Pathankot Cantt, Kandrori, Mirthal, Bangla, and Mukerian. However, the runaway train managed to break through wooden stoppers placed at Sujanpur.
Finally Stopped in Hoshiarpur:
Finally, railway officials successfully deployed a wooden stopper at Uchi Bassi station in Hoshiarpur, effectively stopping the train. Thankfully, the speed had decreased significantly by this point, allowing for a safe halt.
Investigation Launched:
Railway Minister Ashwani Vaishnav has ordered a detailed report into the incident. A team has already visited Hoshiarpur to investigate the incident and identify potential security lapses. Jammu Railway Division traffic manager confirmed the investigation and efforts to determine the exact cause of the driver's negligence.
This incident highlights the importance of adhering to safety protocols and the potentially serious consequences of human error in critical operations like railway management.
