Southern Gujarat Entrepreneurs Explore Opportunities in Defense Sector

The South Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) hosted a seminar on February 23rd, 2024, titled "Business Opportunities in Defense Sector," aimed at informing entrepreneurs about the growing potential in this sector.

The event featured prominent speakers like Arun Chaudhary, Director of Industry Interface and Technology Management at DRDO (Defense Research and Development Organization), and Rishabh Goradia, Director of Syncthreads Computing Pvt. Ltd., a company with experience in defense projects.

India's Rising Defense Budget Fuels Growth

SGCCI President Ramesh Vaghasia highlighted India's significant investment in the defense sector, currently ranking as the third-highest spender globally. He emphasized the "Make in India" initiative's success, raising domestic defense production from 54% in 2019 to 75% in 2024. Additionally, India's defense exports have witnessed a remarkable rise, increasing from Rs. 686 crore in 2014 to Rs. 16,000 crore currently.

Government Encourages Innovation and Startup Participation

Vaghasia further stressed the government's initiatives to foster innovation and research by opening doors for startups in the defense sector. The National Data Governance Policy, implemented in 2023-2024, aims to support this objective.

Expert Insights on Opportunities and Challenges

Arun Chaudhary acknowledged the vast business potential in the defense sector, emphasizing the importance of innovation and research in developing user-friendly products. He highlighted opportunities in exporting to smaller countries and stressed the need for advancements in areas like AI, cybersecurity, and electro-mechanics. Additionally, Chaudhary explained DRDO's support for the MSME (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises) industry through various programs, including testing, research, and training.

Rishabh Goradia, Director of Syncthreads Computing Pvt. Ltd., added his insights, highlighting the vast market and government support available for startups in the defense sector. He emphasized the demand for digital solutions within India's defense and the importance of understanding specific army needs to develop successful products. Goradia provided examples of existing technologies like AI-powered navigation systems used by the Indian Army.

The seminar concluded with Nikhil Madrasi, Honorary Secretary of the Chamber, managing the proceedings. Asha Dave, Chairperson of the Defense Committee, expressed gratitude to the participants, while committee members Ravin Sanghvi and Dr. D.V. Bhatt introduced the speakers.

This event served as a valuable platform for local entrepreneurs to gain insights into the potential and challenges within the growing defense sector, potentially paving the way for local businesses to contribute to India's self-reliance and security.
