Atiq Ahmed Transferred from Sabarmati Jail to Prayagraj

Uttar Pradesh Police Escorting Murder Suspect by a large police convoy

Uttar Pradesh, India – Atiq Ahmed, a suspect in the Umeshpal murder case, is being transferred from Sabarmati Jail in Ahmedabad to Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, escorted by a large police convoy. The convoy of six vehicles is expected to take Atiq from Jhansi to Prayagraj via Shivpuri for further interrogation in connection with the murder.

The transfer is part of the ongoing trial in the 2007 riots and extortion case in Uttar Pradesh. A court hearing on the matter is scheduled for Wednesday, and the court ordered Atiq Ahmed to be present. Uttar Pradesh Police obtained permission from the court to transfer Atiq from Sabarmati Jail.

Atiq is reportedly apprehensive about the transfer, fearing an encounter similar to the one involving gangster Vikas Dubey, who was killed in an encounter following a road accident while being transported from Madhya Pradesh to Uttar Pradesh.

Atiq Ahmed has been in Sabarmati Jail since 2019, having been initially arrested in February 2017 for the murder of a university employee. He was transferred to Sabarmati Jail after allegations of collecting extortion money while in UP jails. Following his arrest in 2017, Atiq was detained in Deoria jail, where an incident involving businessman Mohit Jaiswal occurred. Jaiswal was allegedly kidnapped by Atiq's associates and brought to Deoria jail. When Jaiswal failed to pay the ransom, Atiq reportedly assaulted him in the jail and threatened to kill him if the ransom was not paid. The transfer to Sabarmati Jail in Ahmedabad was intended to prevent further criminal activity during Atiq's incarceration.
