Raja Yaqoob Farooq, the Director of Tourism for Jammu and Kashmir, shared this information on Wednesday during a press briefing.

Speaking on the sidelines of an event marking International Mountain Day, Farooq stated, "The Ministry of Tourism has already raised this issue with the Ministry of Home Affairs on behalf of various states. Tourists visiting these areas often face challenges due to the lack of mobile network connectivity, making satellite phones a necessity."

Farooq added that discussions between the two ministries are in the final stages.

Boosting Adventure Tourism

Farooq highlighted that mountaineering has become a significant aspect of tourism in the Kashmir Valley. The department has identified 75 new trekking routes, with several already operational.

"Our most popular trekking route is the Kashmir Great Lakes trek. Additionally, routes in Gulmarg and Tarsar Marsar have also been opened. We are working on mapping these trails to ensure they are accessible," he said.

Record Tourist Arrivals

According to Farooq, the Valley has witnessed a record number of foreign tourists this year, with 200-300 visitors arriving daily, sometimes reaching up to 500.

"Despite minimal rainfall and snowfall this year, we are seeing significant tourist activity. Last year, excluding the Amarnath Yatra pilgrims, Kashmir saw 2.3 million tourists. We expect this record to be surpassed this year," he added.

New Adventure Sports

In a bid to attract adventure enthusiasts, the tourism department has introduced rafting activities in Gurez this year.

With these initiatives and the anticipated approval for satellite phone usage, Kashmir is poised to enhance its appeal as a premier destination for both domestic and international tourists.
