Ankara, October 28 A powerful earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck western Turkey late Monday, causing at least three buildings to collapse, officials said. The affected structures were already weakened from a previous earthquake in the region.

As per agency report, Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) stated that the earthquake occurred at 10:48 p.m. local time, with its epicenter located in the Sindirgi district of Balikesir province at a depth of 5.99 kilometers. The tremors were felt in several nearby provinces, including Istanbul, Bursa, Manisa, and Izmir, and were followed by multiple aftershocks.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed that at least three vacant buildings and a two-story shop in Sindirgi collapsed during the quake. These structures had already sustained significant damage in an earlier earthquake. Balikesir Governor Ismail Ustaoğlu reported that 22 people were injured, while local administrator Dogukan Koyuncu told the state-run Anadolu Agency that no fatalities had been reported so far, though assessments were still underway.

In August, Sindirgi had experienced another 6.1 magnitude quake that killed one person and injured dozens. Since then, the surrounding region has continued to experience low-intensity tremors.

Turkey remains one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world. In 2023, a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake killed around 53,000 people and destroyed or severely damaged millions of buildings across 11 southern and southeastern provinces. New Delhi, February 17 – A 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck Delhi and its surrounding areas early Monday morning, waking up residents and sending many running out of their homes in panic. The tremors, which were felt across the city, caused momentary chaos, though no casualties or significant damage were reported.

According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred at 5:36 AM with its epicenter located in the Jheel Park area of Dhaula Kuan at a depth of 5 kilometers. Some residents in the vicinity reported hearing loud noises accompanying the tremors.

Many locals described the intensity of the tremors as alarming. Anil Kumar, a resident of Sitaram Bazaar, said that he had never experienced such a strong jolt before. He recounted how he felt his house shake violently, prompting him and his wife to grab their child and rush outside.

Another resident, Sundar Lal, initially mistook the vibrations for monkeys creating a ruckus on the rooftop. However, he soon realized it was an earthquake and quickly evacuated. In Budh Vihar, CCTV footage captured a car’s horn suddenly going off as the tremors struck, highlighting the impact of the quake.

Taiwan is grappling with the aftermath of a powerful earthquake that struck the eastern coast of Hualien County on Wednesday. The 7.2 magnitude tremor, the strongest to hit the country in a quarter-century, has left a trail of devastation and triggered extensive relief and rescue operations.

Tokyo, Jan 1 (IANS) A series of strong earthquakes with major ones measured at up to 7.6 magnitude have struck the central Japanese prefecture of Ishikawa on Monday, with tsunami warnings issued, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

The major quake hitting Ishikawa, a coastal prefecture on the Island of Honshu, registered an intensity of 7 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale which peaks at 7, with temblors felt in multiple regions of the Asian country, according to the weather agency, Xinhua news agency reported.

The weather agency said the latest major temblor occurred at 4:10 p.m. local time (0710 GMT) at a shallow depth.

The temblor's epicenter was located in Ishikawa's Noto region, at Wajima east-northeast 30 km at 37.5 degrees north latitude and 137.2 degrees east longitude.

A major tsunami warning has been issued by the JMA for Noto region, urging people to evacuate immediately, following tsunami warnings for Niigata, Toyama, Ishikawa prefectures of the Japan Sea side of the country.

Japanese public broadcaster NHK has warned of torrents of water of up to 5 meters.

Kathmandu, Nov 4 (IANS) The death toll from a strong 6.4-magnitude earthquake in Nepal has risen to 128 as the rescue operation is going on, government officials said on Saturday.

The shallow quake hit Jajarkot and Rukum West districts at 1147 p.m. on Friday night, which also injured 140 others, Nepal Police spokesman Kuber Kadayat told Xinhua news agency.

It is difficult for the rescue teams to reach some places as bridges were damaged, and roads were blocked by landslides triggered by the quake, he said.

The depth of the earthquake is between 10 to 15 km, and an additional four aftershocks above magnitude 4.0 have been recorded by Saturday morning, according to Lok Bijay Adhikari from Nepal's National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre.

"The aftershocks continue," he added.

The Nepali government is focusing on the rescue and treatment of the injured after the earthquake.

"The rescue and treatment of the injured is the first priority," Home Ministry spokesman Narayan Prasad Bhattarai told Xinhua.

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal went to the affected area on Saturday morning along with health workers, and helicopters were being mobilised for the rescue operation, he said.

"We have not yet taken details about houses and other infrastructure damaged as the focus is to rescue," said Bhattarai.

"So far, there is no report of casualties from other districts."

In October, three quakes above magnitude 4.0 jolted the Dhading district in central Nepal, with one measuring 6.1-magnitude.

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake in 2015 killed some 9,000 people and damaged more than half a million houses in the Himalayan country.

Kathmandu, Oct 3 (IANS) A 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal on Tuesday afternoon, with tremors felt as far as Delhi-NCR, according to the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre.

The earthquake struck at 2.40 p.m., with its epicentre recorded in Talkot, Bajhang.

Although the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre has put the magnitude at 5.3, India's National Centre for Seismology (NCS) said the temblor measured 6.2 on the Richter scale.

Tremors of the quake was felt in capital Kathmandu, as well as its neigbourings districts of Doti, Accham, Bajura, and other areas within the Sudur Paschim province.

As a result of the ongoing aftershocks, residents have fled from homes and buildings as a safety measure.

According to some initial.reports, some houses were completely or partially destroyed in the earthquake.

There were no immeiate information regarding casualties and injuries.

Delhi and its peripherals felt strong tremors, lasting for several seconds.

Videos on social media showed people running out of their residential premises and offices.

Rabat, Sep 9 (IANS) At least 296 people have died after a powerful earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale struck central Morocco, the Interior Ministry confirmed on Saturday.

According to the US Geological Survey, the epicentre was in the High Atlas Mountains, 71 km south-west of Marrakesh, at a depth of 18.5 km, the BBC reported.

The quake struck at 11.11 p.m. and videos on social media showed people fleeing on the roads, damaged buildings and rubble-strewn streets.

The tremors were also reportedly felt in the capital Rabat, some 350 km away from the epicentre, as well as the cities of Casablanca and Essaouira.

Kutch, June 14 (IANS) In a double blow to the region, an earthquake hit Kutch on Wednesday amidst the looming threat of Cyclone Biparjoy. The quake, measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale, struck 5 kilometers west-southwest from Bhachau, Kutch.

The epicentre of the quake, that took place at 5.15 p.m., was located at a latitude of 23.291 and a longitude of 70.293, with a depth of 18.5 kilometers, informed Gujarat government's Institute of Seismological Research.

This recent earthquake comes just weeks after the last seismic event in Kutch, which occurred in May 2023. The previous earthquake, measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale, struck the Khavda region of Kutch near the India-Pakistan border.

As the region braced for the approaching cyclone Biparjoy, parts of the Saurashtra-Kutch region experienced heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds, as reported by the Meteorological Department on Wednesday.

According to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), in last 24 hour, 54 talukas across the Saurashtra and Kutch districts received more than 10 mm of rainfall. The districts of Devbhumi Dwarka, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Porbandar, and Junagadh witnessed particularly intense rainfall.

Among the affected areas, Khambhaliya taluka in Devbhumi Dwarka district recorded the highest rainfall with 121 mm, followed by Dwarka with 92 mm and Kalyanpur with 70 mm during the mentioned period, as reported by the SEOC.

The combination of the earthquake and heavy rainfall has added to the challenges faced by the residents of Kutch, who are already preparing for the impact of cyclone Biparjoy.
