According to an agency report, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has barred the Jaggi brothers from participating in securities markets until further notice, following an interim order released on Tuesday.

The investigation revolves around their flagship company, Jainsol Engineering, a public-listed firm engaged in solar consulting, engineering procurement and construction (EPC), and leasing of electric vehicles. The company was listed on the BSE SME platform on October 15, 2019, and was later moved to the main board of both BSE and NSE on July 3, 2023.

SEBI’s probe uncovered that portions of corporate loans raised by Jainsol Engineering were allegedly diverted for personal use by the promoters. This includes the purchase of luxury apartments, transactions benefiting related parties, and financial transfers to family members. The findings have triggered concerns over corporate governance and misuse of public funds.

From FY 2016-17 to FY 2023-24, Jainsol Engineering reported rapid financial growth, with operating profit surging from Rs 2 crore to Rs 209 crore and net profit climbing from Rs 2 crore to Rs 80 crore. However, its stock plummeted from a peak of Rs 1,126 per share a year ago to just Rs 116, as credit rating agencies downgraded the company and flagged governance risks.

SEBI initiated its inquiry after receiving multiple complaints and sought clarification from credit rating agencies regarding Jainsol’s loan servicing. While Jainsol presented letters claiming regular repayments to Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA) and Power Finance Corporation (PFC), both lenders later denied issuing such certifications.

Further investigation revealed that significant amounts, supposedly allocated for EV procurement, were routed to related entities owned by the Jaggi family or spent on non-business purposes. A notable instance included Rs 42.94 crore being used via Anmol Singh Jaggi’s Capbridge Ventures to purchase a luxury apartment in DLF Camellias, Gurgaon.

The regulator concluded that the promoters were treating the company as a personal fund reserve, with little regard for shareholder interests. SEBI’s action highlights a stark fall from grace for the Jaggi brothers, once seen as champions of India’s renewable revolution, now facing allegations that could tarnish their credibility and impact investor trust in the clean energy sector.

The facility also includes a green shoe option of 10 billion Yen.

In an official statement released on Friday, IREDA stated that the five-year unsecured loan facility is expected to enhance the agency’s presence in global financial markets. As per agency report, the total landed cost of the loan, after hedging, is anticipated to remain below seven percent, making it more cost-effective compared to similar-term borrowings in the domestic market.

Pradip Kumar Das, Chairman and Managing Director of IREDA, noted that this loan arrangement will allow the organization to diversify its funding sources, optimize borrowing costs, and expand its lending operations aimed at supporting India’s renewable energy sector.

IREDA, a non-banking financial institution, plays a key role in financing renewable and sustainable energy projects across India. The latest agreement with SBI’s Tokyo branch marks another step in the agency’s efforts to tap into international funding avenues to promote green energy growth.

The Rs 1 lakh crore corpus, to provide long-term, interest-free financing for the tech-savvy youth is a positive measure as access to capital is a critical factor to support innovation and growth in sunrise industries.

Presenting the Interim Budget in the Lok Sabha last week, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that this corpus will provide "long-term low or nil interest rates so that the youth can innovate at scale."

“For our tech-savvy youth, this will be a golden era. A corpus of Rs 1 lakh crore will be established with a 50-year interest-free loan. The corpus will provide long-term financing or refinancing with long tenors and low or nil interest rates,” said the Finance Minister.

This will encourage the private sector to scale up research and innovation significantly in sunrise domains.

“We need to have programmes that combine the powers of our youth and technology,” she said.

Lieutenant-General Dr SP Kochhar, Director General, Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), said that the long-term, interest-free or low interest rate loans and focus on deep technology will “further encourage the private sector to scale up research and innovation.”

Ankur Bansal, Co-Founder and Director, BlackSoil Capital, said the move will encourage entrepreneurship.

“In addition, such initiatives will attract investment from the private sector and foreign investors, driving growth and propelling India towards self-reliance,” said Bansal.

The Finance Minister said that a new scheme will be launched to strengthen the deep-tech sector for Defence purposes.

Peeyush Vaish, Partner and TMT Industry Leader, Deloitte India, said that the large interest-free outlay will further boost our tech start-up ecosystem in emerging areas around 5G, generative AI, agritech and healthtech.

“The Rs 1 lakh crore corpus that will be made available with 50-year interest-free (long-term financing or refinancing) to encourage the private sector to scale up R&D in Sunrise domain is a welcome move for the sector. This will push India to the forefront of innovation and skill enhancement,” said Vaish.

Neeraj Bansal, Co-Head and COO, India Global, KPMG in India, said the corpus will help in improving India’s research and innovation ecosystem, critical to the country’s aspirations of being a $5 trillion economy.

The government will also expand and strengthen the EV ecosystem by supporting manufacturing and charging infrastructure.

The focus on boosting EV charging stations will drive sales of both vehicles and charging infrastructure.

Kanishk Maheshwari, Co-Founder & MD, Primus Partners, said that the new scheme for bio-manufacturing and biofoundry is a welcome step towards promoting sustainable and green manufacturing practices.

"It augurs well for both large and MSME units and should enable fast adoption of green manufacturing practices in the manufacturing process," he said.

India is making progress in building its EV charging infrastructure in order to phase out diesel vehicles in a stipulated time-frame but there is still a long way to go.

Currently, the ratio of EVs to charging stations is nearly 9:1, while the ideal ratio should be 4:1, meaning four cars per one charging point.

According to industry experts, most of the public charging stations are currently available in Tier 1 cities and some highways.

"However, for mass EV adoption to occur, charging infrastructure must be accessible throughout the country to encourage people to choose EVs for long-distance travel," senior analyst Soumen Mandal from Counterpoint Research told IANS.

India is likely to have 10,000 public charging stations by the end of 2025.

"Furthermore, in order to achieve a 30 per cent EV adoption rate, India must build more than 300,000 public charging stations by 2030," Mandal said.

Additionally, government initiatives like the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme further incentivise EV adoption.

Another sunrise sector is clean energy, which promises a golden opportunity for companies to develop cutting-edge solutions to innovate further solar panels, wind turbines, and energy storage systems.

The industry hailed the government's latest push towards ‘green growth' with a new scheme of bio-manufacturing and bio-foundry that will foster sustainable mobility.

The Government said that such steps will provide environment-friendly alternatives such as biodegradable polymers, bio-plastics, bio-pharmaceuticals and bio-agri-inputs.

“This scheme will also help in transforming today’s consumptive manufacturing paradigm to the one based on regenerative principles,” said Sitharaman.

According to Neeraj Bansal the emphasis on green energy, announcement of rooftop solarisation and the fostering of the EV ecosystem underline the government’s priority on sustainability.

Mayank Bindal, Founder and CEO, Snap E Cabs (EV Cabs), said the announcement of a new scheme for bio-manufacturing “underscores the government's dedication to promoting green growth and environmental stewardship.”

“The government’s continued focus on the EV ecosystem is indeed a pragmatic step forward and will continue to help India succeed in achieving its long-term decarbonisation objectives. This is an exciting time for the country's green industrial and economic transition,” said Manoj Nair, Head of India GDC, Fujitsu India.

In order to achieve the target of net zero carbon emissions by 2070, there has been an emphasis on a green economy with focus on expansion of solar energy, bio fuels and charging infrastructure which will raise the need for green skills.

This initiative, which caught global attention, is a significant stride towards achieving a harmonious balance between progress and environmental conservation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the village's distinction as the first in the nation to enjoy round-the-clock solar power.

Set up with an investment of $9.7 million, the solar project in Modhera is a testament to the collaborative efforts of the Union Government and the Government of Gujarat.

This ambitious project has equipped the village with excess renewable energy, setting a sustainable template for others to follow.

As UN Secretary-General António Guterres noted, Modhera is a symbol of "reconciliation between humankind and the planet.”

The solar initiative has brought about a radical transformation in the lives of Modhera's residents as the transition to renewable energy has enabled residents to save substantially on their power bills. The savings range from 60 to 100 per cent.

Spanning nearly 30 acres, Modhera's solar infrastructure includes ground-mounted panels and rooftop installations, generating more power than the village's daily consumption.

The infrastructure includes a six megawatt (MW) ground-mounted project, a 15 MW battery storage system, and one kilowatt (KW) rooftop set-ups on over 1,300 houses.

This framework caters to the villagers' needs and opens avenues for income generation by selling surplus power back to the grid and lowering bills.

Villagers like Ashaben reported savings in electricity costs, turning their once-substantial bills into credits. This financial liberation is emblematic of the broader benefits that renewable energy can offer to rural economies.

The Sun Temple of Modhera, a 1,000-year-old architectural marvel, now boasts features like a 3D light show and electric vehicle charging stations in its parking area.

Even as Modhera takes a giant leap in the modern world by harnessing solar power, it honours its traditional association with the Sun Temple and sets a benchmark for sustainable development.

The residents of Modhera are not just embracing a new energy source they are pioneering a movement, leading the way towards a future where renewable energy and environmental stewardship go hand in hand.

Small capacity atomic power plants, popularly called Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), with their unique features of modularity, scalability, small footprint and improved safety present themselves as an attractive option for repurposing of retiring coal-based thermal power station sites, Minister of State for Atomic Energy and Space Dr Jitendra Singh said in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

Deploying Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) across the country, especially in locations not suitable for large nuclear plants, can produce a large amount of low-carbon electricity. In order to move away from fossil fuel consumption, SMRs can be installed and operated for repurposing the aging fossil fuel-based power plants, he explained.

However, SMRs are not expected to serve as replacement to conventional large-sized nuclear power plants, which serve as base load plants.

Nuclear power plants are installed and operated in line with stringent regulatory requirements to contain radiation and to avoid exposure to the public in all circumstances. The techno-commercial aspects of SMRs are still in initial stages even globally and its large-scale deployment depends on various factors, including regulatory harmonization globally by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), especially considering emergency planning zones and public acceptance., the statement added.

New Delhi (India), November 9: As the world grapples with environmental challenges and energy security concerns, India’s Biodiesel sector is stepping up to provide greener and more sustainable alternatives. This Industry has witnessed unprecedented growth and is on path to create a milestone in India’s pursuit of reducing its dependency on imported fossil fuels.

While the industry has made noteworthy progress, it is imperative for all stakeholders, to collaborate to ensure that it continues to grow and thrive.

Shri Sidhartha Mitra, GM (Biofuels) of Indian Oil Corporation says, “We are committed to increase Biodiesel blends in the country and have overcome many challenges and this can be seen because the Oil Companies have recently published a one year Expression of Interest (EOI) for purchase of 165 crore litres of Biodiesel and this number will only grow. Under the guidance of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, we are geared up to increase blending levels to assist in achieving our Country’s commitment of Net Zero emissions by 2070”

This industry commenced with about 11 units and is expected to touch 100 units across the country. Notable established manufacturers in the country like Universal Biofuels in the South region, Monopoly Innovations in Western Region, BioD Energy and Kotyark Industries in Northern Region, Emami Agrotech in Eastern Region, have given a major impetus due to the ever-growing opportunity it presents.

During the General Body Meeting coinciding with the Industry Prebid Meeting of the One Year Biodiesel EOI, held on 21st September 2023, in New Delhi, Dr. Akhilesh Sarraf, President of the Biodiesel Manufacturers Association of India said “Biodiesel has a potential to replace 1650 crore litres of conventional diesel in near future which will lead to an import saving of more than Rs. 49,500 crores every year and reduction of 3.27 crores metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year.
