This thoughtful gesture, which has been a cherished practice for the past three decades, brought smiles and warmth to the hospital environment.

This year, the nurses once again applied kumkum tilak to the patients, offering their heartfelt wishes for a speedy recovery. The event was organized in the presence of Iqbal Kadiwala of the Gujarat Nursing Council, with the Nursing Association tying Rakhis to the patients as a symbol of care and protection.

The nurses went from ward to ward, tying Rakhis and celebrating the festival with patients, many of whom were moved to tears by the kindness and affection shown to them. The celebration was not limited to the patients; resident doctors at the hospital also received Rakhis from the nursing staff, further enhancing the spirit of the festival.

As part of the ceremony, the nursing staff tied a Raksha Sutra to Dr. Ketan Nayak, while Dr. Parulben Vadgama tied Rakhis to Kiranbhai Domadia and Iqbal Kadiwala, making the occasion even more special. The celebration of Rakshabandhan at Surat Civil Hospital once again highlighted the deep bond of care and compassion between the nursing staff and their patients, bringing a sense of joy and positivity to all involved.

Many brothers and sisters participated enthusiastically in the occasion.

During the celebration, Radhika Cheema-Chairperson of IKJ Care Foundation and a well-known young entrepreneur, enlightened the importance of this auspicious festival and said that Raksha Bandhan is a festival that strengthens the sacred bond between a brother and sister.

The word Raksha Bandhan itself describes “Raksha Ka Bandhan,” which means The Bond of Protection. A sister ties the sacred thread of ‘Rakhi’ on her brother’s wrist, and the brother promises to protect his sister. As soon as the festival of Raksha Bandhan arrives, the old memories of a brother and sister become completely new as it is a bond that revives the relationship. To maintain relationships, patience, understanding, affinity, love, and sacrifice are indeed required elements.

To cherish this bond of love, threading all these in one festoon is called Raksha Bandhan. In today’s era, no matter how much progress we make, it is because of these festivals that we stay connected. The festival of Rakhi is a symbol of love. It is a representation of fulfilling the promises made to each other. It is a sacred day for brother-sister affinity when some new promises are made.

India is known as a country of many customs, cultures, and festivals. She further said that every time, festivals bring a new message for us. In today’s modern age, foppishness has become too common among people, but it is necessary to avoid it. Only tying a silk thread on the wrist can’t be recognized as Raksha Bandhan, but adding the sweetness of love to the relationship is also necessary.

The main objective of IKJ Care Foundation is to educate every child with perseverance, commitment, determination, and to develop a socially conscious society, to enhance job-oriented career skills in women, to provide medical assistance to children below the poverty line, to aware and educate people around, to promote Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, etc.

Let us tell you that Radhika Cheema, the chairperson of IKJ Care Foundation, always participates in social work. With her interest and skills, she has also become the brand ambassador for Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Ambala). She is also the President of the District Youth Development Organization (Women’s Unit).

She has also served on the post of President of Haryana State for International Human Rights Organization (IHRO), under which she promoted women’s skills.

For environmental protection, intensive tree plantation, distribution of plants, and polythene-free Ambala campaign were also started under her supervision. To distribute free food, medicines, masks, and other essential items to the needy during COVID-19, the organization supported the administration as well as provided financial support to other social work organizations.

Radhika Cheema is also recognized as a leading example of women’s empowerment. Many renowned personalities have appreciated her for her remarkable social work. Apart from this, she has also been specifically honoured in various big events.

The celebration was held on Thursday morning, as many had refrained from observing the festival the day before due to astrological considerations.

Nursing staff from Surat Civil Hospital were among the attendees, tying traditional rakhis around CR Patil's wrist, wishing him good health and a long life. Significantly, the staff presented Patil with 400 lotuses, an overt nod to their aspirations for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to secure over 400 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

A Mental Resolution and Political Aspirations

"On Rakshabandhan, a brother pledges to protect his sister for life. I am honored that the nursing staff chose to celebrate this meaningful festival with me," said CR Patil. He pointed out that the 400 lotuses symbolized hopes for a sweeping BJP victory in the next general elections, aiming to see Narendra Modi return as Prime Minister.

The nursing team also included individuals from Jammu and Kashmir who are currently studying in Surat. They joined in praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi and expressed their wishes for the "Kamal" (lotus, the election symbol of the BJP) to bloom across the nation.

The event served as more than just a festive gathering; it underscored the blend of cultural tradition and political expectations, marking a unique instance where a common Indian festival is imbued with layers of additional meaning.

A notable event took place in Ahmedabad's famous Jagannath Temple located in the Jamalpur area, where Muslim women tied Rakhis to Mahant Dilipadas Maharaj, further fostering a sense of communal unity.

The Muslim women of Jamalpur went beyond the ritual of tying the Rakhi; they also applied Tilak-Kumkum on Mahant Dilipadas Maharaj and offered him sweets. "We crafted Rakhis featuring replicas of Taranga and Lord Jagannath, especially for the Mahant, symbolizing our unity and shared cultural heritage," said one of the participating women.

Mahant Dilipadas Maharaj expressed his joy at this inclusive celebration. "Rakshabandhan is not just a festival for brothers and sisters; it's a symbol of love and brotherhood that transcends religious boundaries," he said. "The Muslim community has always been supportive and cooperative with the Jagannath temple during various festivals, and today's Rakshabandhan celebration is a testament to that spirit of unity."

This gesture by the Muslim women of Jamalpur to actively participate in the Rakshabandhan celebrations at Jagannath Temple serves as a heartwarming example of interfaith harmony and unity, reaffirming the festival's universal message of love and brotherhood.

The minister tied Rakhis to the wrists of the elderly residents, seeking their blessings and pledging to uphold his responsibilities towards them.

"This is not just about the ritual of tying Rakhis; this is about reminding families, especially children who have forgotten their parents, of the importance of family bonds," said Sanghvi. He urged children to remember their parents and acknowledge the sacrifices made for them.

Sanghvi expressed his gratitude for having Rakhis tied on his wrist, describing it as a symbol of protection. He took the opportunity to address the role of the police in acting as a bridge between generations. "If we can instill this sense of duty and responsibility in even 50 percent of people, we will consider ourselves successful," he stated.

Additionally, the Home Minister commended the Gujarat Police and their Xi team, stating that today would be a "lucky day" for the force as they would receive blessings from around 70,000 senior citizens. He vowed that the police would intensify their fight against criminals, highlighting recent successes in drug cases.

Sanghvi also made promises regarding the improvement of law enforcement, particularly concerning women. "We will soon ensure swift justice in cases against women, and make consistent efforts to improve the system," he said. In a final cautionary note, the minister advised against reckless driving. "Remember, your mothers and sisters are waiting at home; drive according to the rules."

The Home Minister's visit underscored the dual roles played by Rakshabandhan: as a symbol of familial love and as a reminder of societal responsibilities. By linking the festival to broader issues, such as the importance of family and the role of law enforcement, Sanghvi made it clear that the celebration was more than just a ritual—it was a call to action for the community.

Sisters of the prisoners were permitted to visit the jail to participate in the age-old ritual of tying Rakhis around the wrists of their incarcerated brothers.

This year, like the previous one, the ceremony was filled with emotional fervor. The atmosphere inside the jail turned poignant for a moment, as brothers and sisters were moved to tears during the ritual. "The scene was heartbreaking. It was difficult to see my brother behind bars, but the occasion at least allowed us a moment of unity and love," said one of the sisters present.

Vice President of Lajpore Jail, D.P. Bhatt, informed that the arrangements were specially made in line with the significance of Rakshabandhan, a festival symbolizing the sacred bond between brothers and sisters. "We wanted to provide an opportunity for familial bonding, despite the constraints," Bhatt stated.

The jail administration had taken proactive measures by notifying all the inmates in advance that their sisters would be visiting to tie Rakhis. "We took steps to ensure the inmates knew what to expect, and so the emotional preparation was there on both sides," added Bhatt.

Earlier in the morning, the local government representatives also extended Rakshabandhan wishes to the prisoner brothers, acknowledging the importance of the occasion. The event served as a poignant reminder that even within the confines of incarceration, familial bonds endure and significant moments can be shared.

This Rakshabandhan, they are choosing gold and silver rakhis inscribed with messages like 'No Drugs' and 'Stop Drugs' to raise awareness and protect their brothers from addiction.

A Socially Conscious Twist to Traditional Festivity

Rakshabandhan is a sacred festival celebrating the bond between brothers and sisters. Sisters typically tie a rakhi, a protective thread, on their brothers' wrists, praying for their long life and well-being. In return, brothers promise to protect their sisters. This year, however, the rakhis have taken on an additional, socially conscious role.

Amid a backdrop of rising drug abuse among the youth and substantial drug seizures by agencies, these special rakhis aim to make brothers promise to stay away from drugs. "The rakhis have given us a chance to tackle this issue head-on," said a local resident.

Crafted by Local Jewelers

The rakhis are crafted by Surat-based jewelers and weigh between 5 to 10 grams. The inscriptions are not just limited to anti-drug messages. The jewelers have also launched rakhis featuring messages like 'No Tobacco', 'Save Tree', and 'Save Water'.

"As people recognized the potential of rakhis to be a vehicle for social messages, demand for such designs has increased," said the businessman behind the initiative. Customized designs are also available to cater to the preferences of their customers.

Community-Wide Impact

The special rakhis are drawing attention across Surat, highlighting a community-wide concern over drug abuse and other social issues. By intertwining social messages with traditional practices, the city is taking a novel approach to combating societal problems.

As the rakhis circulate and more brothers make the solemn promise to stay away from drugs, the initiative marks a hopeful step in a broader fight against substance abuse in the community. This Rakshabandhan, the protective threads tied on wrists are not just symbols of familial love, but also beacons of social responsibility.

The entire city has witnessed a surge in sweet sales, with more than 1.5 lakh kilograms sold in just the last three days. Sumul Dairy, which has been a part of the community's festive celebrations for years, reported a 10% increase in sales compared to last year. "Surti people have a penchant for sweets during festivals like Rakshabandhan, Janmashtami, and Diwali. This year is no exception," said Jayesh Patel, director of Surat Dairy.

Sumul Dairy attributes its high sales numbers partly to its focus on quality. Patel stated, "Since Mawa, a main product, is produced in-house, quality is guaranteed." Among their top sellers were 50,000 kg of Pedha, Kaju Katari, and Mawa Barfi, followed by 30,000 kg of Shrikhand and 10,000 kg of Mawa.

The sales not only bring joy to the festivities but also have a significant economic impact. Sumul Dairy, known for their quality products, reported that the high sales volume yields considerable revenue, which ultimately benefits local cattle farmers.

As the city dives into Rakshabandhan celebrations, the sweet shops have been bustling with activity, signaling not just cultural richness but also a robust business environment. Given the increased sales this year, it appears that the tradition of sharing sweets on this special festival continues to grow, making it sweeter with each passing year.
