The proceeds from this spiritual gathering will support the Sadbhavana Trust and fund the construction of the Sadbhavana Old Age Home and other charitable initiatives.

On the first day of the Ramkatha, which took place at Rajkot’s Racecourse Ground, Morari Bapu appealed to people to extend their affection and support to the elderly and nature. Responding to his call, devotees made unprecedented contributions, reinforcing the Ramkatha’s core message of compassion and humanity.

The Sadbhavana Old Age Home project, a Rs. 300 crore initiative coming up at Paddhari on Jamnagar Road, is the centrepiece of this fundraising effort. Designed as a sanctuary for destitute, disabled and helpless elderly citizens, the facility will feature 1,400 rooms and aims to provide care and dignity to residents. The project also emphasises environmental conservation through large-scale tree plantation initiatives, blending spiritual values with ecological responsibility.

This Ramkatha was the 947th katha in Morari Bapu’s six-decade journey of sharing the teachings of Lord Ram and the Ramayana. His timeless messages of truth, love and compassion resonate deeply with crores of people worldwide, and the Rajkot event has further demonstrated the transformative power of spirituality.

The spiritual gathering, which began on November 23 with a ceremonial Pothi Yatra, drew around 80,000 devotees, dignitaries and volunteers every day from across the globe, and brought together dozens of community organisations and volunteers to ensure its success. Also every day a large number of listeners and devotees accepted the food prasad with devotion.

The Ramkatha, which concluded on December 1, not only brought spiritual solace to thousands but also highlighted the potential of faith to lead to meaningful social change. The funds raised will bring new hope to hundreds of elderly individuals while contributing to global efforts to combat climate change.

The event, taking place from August 17 to August 25 at the Mariott Hotel, promises to be a deep exploration of Goswami Tulsidas’ Ram Charita Manas in a city historically linked to Hinduism and Buddhism.

Despite Indonesia being a predominantly Muslim country, Yogyakarta is home to the magnificent Prambanan Temple complex, one of the most iconic Hindu temples in Indonesia. This historic site has been a custodian of Hindu culture and spirituality for centuries. The intricate reliefs of Prambanan depict scenes from the Ramayana, reflecting Yogyakarta’s deep cultural connection to this revered epic.

Now, speaking in Yogyakarta, Morari Bapu, known for his insightful spiritual teachings and landmark discourses, said that he will focus on two central Chaupais (quatrains) from the epic:

Bal Kaand Chaupai148: Chhabi Samudra Hari Roopa BilokiI Ektak Nayan Pat Roki II

Ayodhya Kaand Chaupai156: Bipra Jeevai Dehi Din Dana I Siv Abhishek KarhiBidhi NanaII

Speaking on the inaugural day, Morari Bapu said that he would like to name this katha ‘Manas Samudra Abhishek’. He explained that the word Abhishek comes 16 times in Goswami Tulsidas’ RamCharita Manas, and the word Samudra comes 7 times in it. Samudra means sea, and it is a coincidence that there are 7 types of seasin this world.

He then narrated a story related to Lord Buddha wherein he did abhishek (anointment) of a person from a “so-called untouchable” caste despite opposition from religious leaders. But Buddha felt that the only criterion for acceptance should be his worth, not caste.

Bapu said that traditionally, abhishek is done with 5 products, including milk, curd, honey, ghee (clarified butter) and sugar. Later he added that Goswami Tulsidas’ 5 sheel (signs of good conduct) are vivek (power of discretion), prakash (not to live in ignorance), vishalta (largesse), vishwas (faith), and shraddha (devotion).

The spiritual leader also wished the country of Indonesia its Independence Day and complimented the people for having a multicultural heritage, which they respected despite the country having a Muslim population of about 80%.

Bapu also expressed concern at the state of Hindus in Bangladesh and said that a recent congregation of Hindu saints in Ahmedabad had appealed to Bapu to send a memo about the need to protect followers of Sanatana Dharma to the United Nations, where he has recently concluded a katha.

Yogyakarta’s Hindu Roots

Yogyakarta, located in central Java, has a rich history that dates back to ancient times. The region was once part of the Mataram Kingdom, known for its flourishing Hindu-Buddhist culture between the 8th and 15th centuries. The spread of Hinduism to Java is generally associated with the influence of Indian traders and the island’s maritime ties with India.

The Prambanan and Borobudur temples, constructed during this period by the Sanjaya dynasty of Mataram Kingdom, are among Indonesia’s most significant archaeological sites, reflecting the height of Hindu culture and architecture in Java. The Mataram Kingdom eventually split into two—one Hindu-Buddhist and one Islamic.

This special discourse in Yogyakarta, a city where Hindu heritage is celebrated through festivals, arts, and historical sites, promises to be a spiritually enriching experience. Attendees will not only engage with the Ramayana’s wisdom but also connect with Yogyakarta’s vibrant cultural heritage.

The discourses will be held daily at 10 a.m. local time, followed by a vegetarian meal for all attendees.

About Morari Bapu

Morari Bapu has been reciting Ram Kathas for over sixty-five years, beginning his spiritual journey at the age of 14 under a village tree in Gujarat. Drawing from Vedic Sanatana Dharma, popularly known as Hindu Sanatana Dharma, Bapu’s narrations emphasize universal peace, truth, love, and compassion. His unique approach incorporates examples from various religions, inviting people of all faiths to join in the spiritual journey.

Over the decades, Morari Bapu has conducted Ram Kathas in numerous cities and pilgrimage sites across India and around the world, including Sri Lanka, South Africa, Kenya, the United Kingdom, the United States, Brazil, Australia, Israel, and Japan, attracting millions of followers. He recently held Kathas at all 12 Jyotirlingas in India by train and conducted a landmark event at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, where he spoke on the theme of “the whole world being one family.”

Beyond traditional venues, Bapu has also conducted Ram Kathas for marginalized communities, including sex workers and transgender individuals, and has been actively involved in humanitarian efforts in disaster-hit areas globally, including war-torn Ukraine and Israel.

This significant event marks the first time a spiritual leader has held such an event at the UN, highlighting its global importance.

On the opening day, Morari Bapu captivated the audience by drawing upon two central lines from the Ram Charita Manas of Goswami Tulsidas, setting the tone for the entire discourse.

These Chaupais (quatrains) from Uttar Kaand are:

Akhila bisva yaha mora upaya I Sab para mohi barbari daya II

Saba mum priya saba mum upaje I saba te adhika manuja mohi bhae II

(The whole of this universe is my creation and I am equally compassionate to all. I love all because they are my creation, yet humans are the dearest to me of all.)

Bapu said, “The charisma of the Ramcharitmanas has brought all of us here. Many years ago, I had circumambulated the United Nations Headquarters building. At that time, I had not thought of doing a Katha inside the United Nations, but Katha must have wished for it, and thus we are here.”

He emphasized that this Ram Katha brings the goodwill of all Indians, highlighting that it is not a show of strength but a spiritual discourse. “What is historic can become old and jaded, but what is spiritual remains eternal,” he added, in the context of Hinduism being Sanatana Dharma.

Morari Bapu discussed the four main goals of the United Nations: maintaining global peace, developing friendly relations among nations, improving the lives of poor people by conquering hunger, disease, and illiteracy, and encouraging respect for each other’s rights and freedoms. He also proposed five additional goals: global dialogue (samwad), acceptance (swikar), truth (satya), love (prem), and compassion (karuna).

He expressed gratitude to the UN Secretary-General and his team for their cooperation in organizing the event.

Manas Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam

Morari Bapu named the katha as Manas Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam. Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam is a Sanskrit phrase found in Hindu sacred texts such as the Maha Upanishad, meaning “The World Is One Family.” This term was also the theme of the Indian government for the G20 summit in Delhi in 2023.

Morari Bapu’s humanitarian efforts extend to disaster-hit areas globally, including war-torn regions and marginalized communities. Bapu has also offered to hold a Ram Katha on the border of Ukraine and Russia in order to end war and re-establish peace. He also offered the same in Israel.

Bapu’s long term commitment to inclusivity and compassion is evident in his outreach to sex workers, transgender individuals, and others often overlooked by society. His teachings align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in promoting peace, environmental sustainability, and social justice.
The one-hour documentary film on spiritual leader Morari Bapu’s 12 Jyotirlinga Ram Katha Yatra, beautifully encapsulates the remarkable pilgrimage undertaken by him and his 1008 followers in July-August 2023. It vividly captures all the major highlights of the journey, including the views of devotees and Morari Bapu himself.

This unprecedented spiritual expedition covered the sacred route of the twelve Jyotirlingas, the holiest shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva. The journey spanned 12,000 kilometres over 18 days, traversing the icy Himalayan heights to verdant valleys and sprawling seacoasts. Morari Bapu and the devotees watched the premiere of the documentary at Chitrakutdham in Talgajarada, his native village in the Mahuva district of Bhavnagar, Gujarat.

This marks the first time Bapu is bringing his profound narrations to Norway, offering a unique opportunity for cultural and spiritual enrichment.

Drawing from Goswami Tulsidas’ Ram Charita Manas, Bapu chose two central lines from the epic as focal points for the discourse. These are Chaupais(quatrains) 19 and 32A from Baal Kaand:

Mahamantra Joi Jape Mahesu I Kasi Mukati Hetu Upadesu II

Mantra Mahamani Vishey Byal Ke I MetatKathinKuankBhual Ke II

Opening the unique discourse, Bapu said that the Katha in Norway would be the seventh and final leg of the Kshama Yatra that started from Ravechi Katha in Gujarat. By Kshama Yatra, he means that we, as a community of humans, must seek forgiveness from the Buddhpurush or great personalities whom we have wronged despite their yeoman service to humanity.

Talking about the Katha being hosted in Norway, he said he equates it to the Gujarati term ‘norwil,’ which is a medicinal plant that a mongoose smells to recover when injured or losing in its fight against a snake. This plant’s scent helps the mongoose become alert and make a total recovery, eventually winning the fight.

For Goswami Tulsidas, who was tormented by the pandits of Kashi, Chitrakoot felt like his aushadhi or norwil.

Bapu also spoke at length about the significance of the month of Asadh, which he felt was a month filled with gravitas. It is during this month that Guru Purnima is celebrated. Additionally, the first day of this month marks the birthday of the great poet Kalidasa, and the second day sees the celebration of Jagannath’s Ratha Yatra.

Elaborating on Kalidasa, Bapu narrated that the poet was considered a fool in his time but was married to an erudite woman, making their marital life incompatible and distressing. He then dedicated himself to Ma Kali and received her blessings for his sterling accomplishments. The story signifies that one should use one’s abilities to serve the supreme power, or param tatva.

Regarding the Ram Charita Manas by Goswami Tulsidas, Bapu said it is possibly the most read sacred text in the world. On the topic of the Manas Mantrashtak, he mentioned that the Ram Charita Manas contains eight types of mantras, including the Ram Mantra, Shiva Mantra, Dwadash Akshara Mantra, Sabar Mantra, Param Laghu Mantra, and Beej Mantra. He added that the Ramayana itself is a mantra.

He also emphasized the importance of ashtakas, many of which were written by Adi Shankaracharya.

Environment and Social Concerns and a Call to End Wars

On the first day of the Katha, Morari Bapu called for the preservation of Jeev (humans), Jad (trees), and Jal (water). The spiritual guru has been advocating for everyone to plant trees, especially in their home courtyards or backyards, to ensure they are tended to and cared for.

He also once again called for an end to the Ukraine-Russia war and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, expressing his anguish at seeing children begging for food with tin utensils in hand.

A Special Connection with the Midnight Sun

The timing of this event in July is particularly significant, as Tromsø experiences 24 hours of sunlight during this period, mirroring a legendary moment in the Ramayana. According to the epic, when Lord Ram was born, the sun did not set for a month, symbolizing eternal light and divine presence. This celestial phenomenon resonates deeply with the inauguration of the Ram Lalla Temple in Ayodhya earlier this year, on January 22, 2024, where it is believed Lord Ram was born.

Valmiki Nagar (Bihar) [India], June 5: Valmiki Nagar, Bihar, June 1, 2024 – Renowned spiritual guru Morari Bapu, known for his profound interpretations of the Ram Charit Manas, has emphasized the importance of building bridges, or “setus,” in a world increasingly marked by conflict. Drawing parallels from the Ramayana, Bapu illustrated how Lord Ram served as a bridge between various kings, sages, and even castes. Similarly, Bapu’s Vyas Peeth aims to bridge the Valmiki Ramayana and Goswami Tulsidas’ Ram Charit Manas.

In his ongoing discourse in Valmiki Nagar, Morari Bapu explained, “Just as Lord Ram was a setu between King Dasrath and King Janak, and between the sages Vishwamitra and Vashishtha, my efforts are to create a setu between the different narratives of the Ramayanas.” Bapu’s choice to speak on Maharishi Valmiki’s Ramayana during his 937th Katha is an attempt towards the same.

Addressing the differences between the two Ramayanas, Bapu stated, “There are several differences in narratives, but there are ‘Sat Koti Ramayana’—innumerable Ramayanas in different epochs, hence different narratives are natural.” He cited examples such as Valmiki’s portrayal of Ravan as a protector of Vedic dharma, in contrast to Tulsi Ramayana’s depiction of Ravan as a tormentor who was formerly king Pratapbhanu in his previous birth. “This can happen as different epochs can have different personalities in the same role,” he explained.

Morari Bapu also touched on the essence of Sanatana Dharma, describing it as “Nirantar Nutanta”—an ever-new freshness. He reiterated his belief that Maharishi Valmiki was reborn as Goswami Tulsidas, who wrote the Ram Charit Manas to reflect the cultural needs of his time.

The Katha event, aptly named “Manas Ramayan,” is being held from June 1 to June 9, 2024, in the scenic Valmiki Nagar near the famous Valmiki Tiger Reserve, which spans the border between India and Nepal. This location holds significant historical and spiritual relevance, being close to the Valmiki Ashram where Sita gave birth to her twin sons, Kush and Luv, and where she concluded her earthly leela.

The event features free vegetarian meals for all attendees, regardless of their participation in the Katha. It is hosted by Paren and Mayuri Shah of Baroda. The central verses chosen by Bapu for this Katha are:

nānā bhā̐ti rāma avatārā | rāmāyana sata koṭi apārā || (Various are the manifestations of Ram; the Ramayanas are innumerable.) —Balkand, Doha 33

baṁdau̐ muni pada kaṁju rāmāyana jehi̐ niramayau | sakhara sukomala maṁju doṣa rahita dūṣana sahita || (I bow to the lotus feet of the sage who composed the Ramayana, devoid of flaws and featuring the story of Dushan.) —Soratha, Balkand, Doha 14

Valmiki Nagar is a renowned tourist spot featuring a dam on the Gandak River, crucial for irrigation and hydro-electricity generation. Visitors can explore the natural beauty and serene surroundings of the Himalayan foothills, including the historic Valmiki Ashram, where Maharshi Valmiki, the author of the Ramayana, is said to have spent several years. The ashram is also marked by two temples dedicated to the sage and Sita, along with places signifying where Sita gave birth to Kush and Luv and where she entered the earth.

The Valmiki Nagar National Park and Tiger Reserve, spread across 544 square kilometers, is home to myriad wild animals and birds, with the magnificent Himalayas providing a backdrop for this calm wild land.

Addressing media representatives after casting his ballot, Morari Bapu reaffirmed his impassioned plea for widespread electoral engagement. He underscored, “Today marks the festival of democracy across India, with polling taking place in Gujarat and various other states. As a conscientious citizen, I have discharged my sacred duty to cast my vote. I have previously implored my fellow citizens to do the same, and I reiterate my earnest appeal today and in the forthcoming phases of the Lok Sabha elections, urging all to partake and contribute towards shaping the destiny of our nation.”

With an unwavering commitment to his civic responsibility, Morari Bapu meticulously cleared his schedule for May 7, prioritizing his active participation in the democratic process. This dedication remained steadfast, even amidst his engagement in the discourse of Ram Katha in Rudraprayag, Uttarakhand, until May 05. It is noteworthy that Morari Bapu typically delivers his discourses in Hindi during his engagements across India and the world, while opting for Gujarati during events held within his native state.

Even amidst the Rudraprayag Katha, Morari Bapu fervently implored millions of citizens to embrace their electoral duty with zeal and vigour. He emphasized the significance of voting, not merely as a fundamental right, but as an indispensable cornerstone in the edifice of nation-building, particularly given India’s esteemed status as the largest democracy globally.

Ahead of returning to Gujarat to exercise his franchise, Morari Bapu made a stop at Rishikesh on May 06. Rishikesh holds profound personal significance for Morari Bapu, as his grandfather and Sadaguru Tribhuvandas ji’s younger brother, Swami Vishnudevanand Giri Ji, served as the 6th Mahamandaleshwar of Kailash Ashram, one of the oldest and revered institutions in the region.

Morari Bapu’s journey with the sacred verses of the Ramayana commenced as a young child. Under the tutelage of his revered grandfather, Tribhuvandas Ji, Morari Bapu diligently sung five chaupais (quatrains) from the Ramayana each day, as he traversed the path to and from school in his native village of Talgajarda.

By the age of 12, Bapu had rendered the entire Ram Charita Manas to memory and started reciting the scripture by the age of 14.

Morari Bapu captivated the audience with his recollections of past experiences and recitations of poems by eminent Gujarati poets. His happiness was palpable amidst the large gathering, reflecting the enduring interest in Gujarati language and literature among the younger generation. Alongside anecdotes from his Ram Kathas, Morari Bapu mesmerised the participants with a selection of poems from diverse linguistic traditions, including Hindi, Gujarati, and Urdu, underscoring the universal appeal of literature.

In his reflections on the poet Gani Saheb, Morari Bapu said, “Jo hriday ni aag vadhi gani, to khud ishwarej krupa kari, jo koi shwaas bandh kari gayu, ke pavan na jaay aganni sthiti (If the fire of the heart grows, then God Himself has graced, if one stops breathing, the state of the fire does not go away)”.

Recalling Gani Saheb’s small physical stature, Morari Bapu emphasised the poet’s ability to unite and inspire through his original compositions. He also recalled that Gani Saheb used to stay in Talgajarda. He said that many compassionate figures have enriched Gujarati literature over the years.

In his address, Morari Bapu also shared other little-known anecdotes from the lives of noted poets and brought the audience closer to the essence of Gujarati language and literature.

Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta, Sanjiv Saraf, Founder of Rekhta Foundation, noted actor Paresh Rawal, and renowned Gujarati litterateur Raghuveer Chaudhari were among the dignitaries who graced the occasion. Folk singer Osman Mir captivated the audience with his renditions, while poet and playwright Raeesh Maniar anchored the event.

In his address, Mr Mehta shared some anecdotes from Morari Bapu’s life and lauded him for his devotion to the cause of spreading the teachings of Lord Ram. Morari Bapu invited Rekhta Gujarati, Raghuveer Chaudhari and other esteemed guests to host an event aimed at the youth at his ashram at Talgajarda.
