In an all-hands meeting with employees addressed by both Musk and X CEO Linda Yaccarino, the news wire initiative was discussed, reports Bloomberg.

“The duo also referenced ambitions to create a news wire service called XWire, which would rival Cision’s PR Newswire,” the report mentioned, citing sources.

Musk and Yaccarino did not divulge much on how X would better compete with platforms that distribute company news and press releases.

As Instagram Threads is moving away from news, X appears to be doubling down on news and even incentivising journalists from posting original content and asking users to become citizen journalists.

Betting big on making X Corp a trusted news platform, Musk said last week that the platform is an “open source news” and whatever is relevant in legacy media is already available on X.

"When fake news spreads on CNN, MSNBC, or in The New York Times or Washington Post, they get the final say and can double down on their false narrative," the X user posted.

Musk said "yes," adding that X is an open source news platform.

"That is the right way to think about it. Anything relevant in legacy media is reposted here anyway," he added.

Musk last month encouraged people to do citizen journalism on X.

"Please encourage more citizen journalism! You can do live video easily from your phone. More on-the-ground reporting from regular citizens will change the world," he said.

In August, Musk invited journalists to publish directly on X (formerly Twitter) and earn a higher income.

The company has also set its sights on competitors like YouTube and LinkedIn in terms of both video and hiring with @XHiring account.

X will require new users in New Zealand and the Philippines to pay $1 to create accounts.

“Read for free, but $1/year to write. It’s the only way to fight bots without blocking real users,” Musk posted.

“This won’t stop bots completely, but it will be 1000X harder to manipulate the platform,” he added.

According to X, this was done in order to fight bots and will be piloted in these countries.

The new move, part of a so-called “Not A Bot” programme, is designed to “bolster our already significant efforts to reduce spam, manipulation of our platform and bot activity,” X said.

New users who opt out of subscribing will only be able to take ‘read only’ actions,” such as viewing posts and watching videos.

This new programme is in addition to X’s main subscription with verified at $8 for month.

X (formerly Twitter) is also reportedly planning to split its premium paid subscription service into three membership tiers to earn more money and become profitable by 2024.

According to reports, X would split the current $8 Premium subscription into three different plans: Basic, Standard, and Plus, at various price points.

The entry-level Basic plan will not reduce the number of ads that users see on the platform.

The Standard tier will show half as many ads and the top Plus premium offering will remove ads entirely and may cost more than $8 per month.

In a live-streamed interaction with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the X owner floated the idea that the social network may no longer be a free site, in a bid to deal with the problem of bots on the platform.

“It’s the only way I can think of to combat vast armies of bots,” Musk said late on Monday.

“Because a bot costs a fraction of a penny -- call it a tenth of a penny -- but even if it has to pay a few dollars or something, the effective cost of bots is very high,” the billionaire added.

The idea of charging everyone on X is not a new idea as last year, Musk had floated it for the first time.

The company currently charges $8 per month from its X Premium users, that gives them an ability to edit posts, see less ads, write longer posts and prioritised rankings in search and conversations.

During the interaction, Musk said that X now now 550 million monthly users, generating 100-200 million posts every day.

Musk did not disclose how many paid subscribers it currently has.

During its last public earnings in Q1 2022, Twitter had mentioned 229 million mDAUs (monetizable daily active user).

“This is coming from me directly. Will greatly improve the aesthetics,” Musk informed via a post.

Earlier, he said that if you’re a journalist who wants more freedom to write and a higher income, “then publish directly on this platform!”.

A follower reacted: “Then give us better tools.”

Meanwhile, Musk has now pushed for X to develop a format for news articles where they only show a lead image and the source URL.

The image would still serve as a link to the article.

The new change may be to reduce the height of individual posts so users’ timelines display more content.

Another X user reacted to the new change:

“Aesthetics are one thing, knowing what you're going to read to want to click on it in the first place is another."

“While I've seen many of your changes greatly benefit the platform & the people using it, (and even some I wasn't skeptical of,) I really don't think this one is a good idea,” the Musk follower posted.

“Block is going to be deleted as a ‘feature’, except for DMs,” the tech billionaire told a follower.

“It makes no sense,” he added.

In June, Musk had said that Twitter should remove blocking in favour of “a stronger form of mute”.

He always complained about mass blocking campaigns against users who subscribe to Twitter Blue.

Regarded as a safety feature by several users, the suggestion to remove the Block feature also saw backlash from concerned users.

“In my opinion it’s worth having. Unfortunately trolls and spammers come out. Haters will always try to get some fame over trolling accounts and bashing their name through the mud and being able to control the experience matters. At least for each user,” posted the Tesla Owners Silicon Valley account.

“Women will never be able to block abusers and those men will still be able to follow and stalk,” another concerned user posted.

Twitter Co-founder Jack Dorsey came out in support of Musk.

“100 per cent mute only,” he posted.

However, most X users said removing the Block feature is “a terrible idea”.

For eligible creators who set up their payout details, you will receive a payment the week of July 31 if you meet the criteria and your payout amount exceeds the minimum threshold of $50, the company said in an update.

“We want the process to be as simple as possible, so all eligible X Blue and Verified Organisations subscribers are entitled to revenue share so long as they meet the eligibility criteria and join,” said the rebranded Twitter.

“You’ll get payouts as long as X determines that you’ve generated more than $50. The support document about the programme doesn’t specify how the company determines the value of its payouts,” it added.

Creators will be able to set up Ads Revenue Sharing and Creator Subscriptions independently. What a user needs once eligible is a Stripe account for payouts. While all eligible users may choose to participate, “if you are found to breach the Ads Revenue Share Terms, which include, for example, Creator Monetization Standards and the X Rules, you may be excluded from the programme,” warned the Musk company.

X said that it may modify or cancel the programme at any time, including for business, financial, or legal reasons. Earlier this month, Twitter launched its ads revenue sharing programme for creators, and started paying some of them.

However, in response to a tweet on Friday, Musk said, "A lot of people have asked to keep light mode, so we will, but the default will be dark and dim will be deleted."

Many users expressed their thoughts on Musk's decision.

While one user requested, "Please don't get rid of dim," another said, "I actually prefer dim over dark mode, it has slightly more dimensionality."

When a user posted a picture of Musk entering into the financial app segment with the new X app, Musk replied: "The goal of my companies is simply to be as useful as possible, never to kill the competition."

"Competing to serve the people is a good thing," he added.

Musk had started hinting at the rebranding of Twitter as X on Sunday with a series of tweets, starting with one that said, "soon we shall bid adieu to the Twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds."

On Monday, the X logo replaced the Twitter blue bird on the platform's web version.

The company also updated its Android app by replacing it with the new logo and name.

Musk on Tuesday clarified, "Twitter was acquired by X Corp both to ensure freedom of speech and as an accelerant for X, the everything app. This is not simply a company renaming itself, but doing the same thing."

"The Twitter name made sense when it was just 140 character messages going back and forth-- like birds tweeting-- but now you can post almost anything, including several hours of video."

He further said that in the coming months, the company will add comprehensive communications and the ability to conduct the "entire financial world."

Earlier this week, workers were seen removing letters from the iconic vertical sign at Twitter's headquarters.

However, the work was halted by the police.

Starting August 7, advertisers who haven't met certain spending thresholds will lose their official brand account verification, reports The Verge.

The news was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.

According to the report, to keep the gold checkmark indicating that the account belongs to a verified brand, brands must have spent at least $1,000 on ads in the previous 30 days or $6,000 in the previous 180 days.

In response to the report report, Musk said the "moderately high" fee is a preventative measure to help reduce the number of scammers who create "millions of accounts" on the platform.

"The reason for the $1,000/month is to set a moderately high bar to be a verified org, so that an org must be of non-trivial size to qualify and to make it expensive for scammers to create millions of accounts," he said.

Earlier this month, Musk said that Twitter is still in the red after a massive 50 per cent drop in advertising revenue and heavy debt from the past.

“We’re still negative cash flow, due to a 50 per cent drop in advertising revenue plus heavy debt load. Need to reach positive cash flow before we have the luxury of anything else,” he had said.

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO took over the micro-blogging platform in a $44 billion acquisition in October last year that included about $13 billion in debt.

In April, Musk told the BBC that “almost all” advertisers had resumed buying ads on Twitter.
