New Delhi, April 3 — The renowned Indian painter Raja Ravi Varma's painting 'Yashoda and Krishna' was sold for a record ₹167.20 crore (approximately $17,978,495) at the Spring Live Auction by Saffronart in Mumbai. This sale marks the highest value ever for a piece of modern Indian art at auction, surpassing the previous record set by MF Husain's unnamed painting, which sold for over ₹118 crore last year.

The estimated value of Varma's artwork was between ₹80-120 crore, and it was purchased by Dr. Cyrus S. Poonawalla, Managing Director of the Serum Institute of India. Poonawalla expressed pride in acquiring, preserving, and caring for the iconic painting, stating that it is a national heritage that should periodically be made available for public viewing. Created during the peak of the artist's career in the 1890s, this piece presents a nuanced interpretation of Lord Krishna's childhood and the maternal love of his caretaker, Yashoda. It is considered one of Varma's most significant and emotive works.

Looking Ahead: Bijay Biswaal Joins the InBidz Journey

In a major announcement, renowned Indian artist Bijay Biswaal will be joining InBidz as a mentor and Chief Judge for Season 2.

Born in Pallahara, Odisha, Biswaal Sir worked with Indian Railways in Nagpur before taking voluntary retirement to follow his passion for painting. His work - deeply rooted in Indian railways and rural life - has touched hearts with its quiet realism and surreal pen art.

In 2015, he received national recognition when Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned him in Mann Ki Baat, calling him a “karma yogi” whose art celebrates everyday India. He was later felicitated by the Government of Odisha and went on to become India’s first Brand Ambassador for Winsor & Newton.

His journey is proof that great art doesn’t need perfect conditions - just deep love.

Mumbai — Contemporary artist Venus Sanghvi presents her ninth solo exhibition, titled “Threading Boundaries”, at Gallery Pradarshak, Khar, from 28th March to 3rd April.

The exhibition showcases an exclusive series of encaustic abstract works on wood, exploring the themes of time, memory, and language. With her signature style of layered compositions, Sanghvi challenges perception and invites deeper contemplation through a visual language that bridges personal experience with universal narratives.

Sanghvi uses the encaustic medium—a blend of heated beeswax and pigments—to create textured, multidimensional surfaces. Her process includes incising, burning, and layering, forming rich tapestries of abstract forms, symbols, and text that evoke a rhythmic interplay between the past and present.

Drawing inspiration from global cultures and the subtleties of language, Threading Boundaries dives into themes of connectivity, spiritual introspection, and historical resonance. The show is a reflection of Sanghvi’s continued evolution as an artist, synthesizing technical mastery with emotional depth.

Her works have previously been displayed at esteemed venues such as the Salarjung Museum (Hyderabad), the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Centre (Washington DC), and even Times Square (New York). She was also part of the Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens Exhibit for Peace in the United States.

Bengaluru, March 6: Christ University witnessed a spectacular theatrical performance with its grand production of Lerner and Loewe’s My Fair Lady on March 1 and 2, leaving audiences spellbound.  Brought to life under the guidance of four international professionals and presented through a special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI), the show transported audiences into the enchanting world of this Broadway masterpiece. The highlight of the show was Vanya Bhatt, whose portrayal of Eliza Doolittle earned her immense praise and admiration.

A packed auditorium on both nights bore witness to a captivating display of theatrical excellence, marked by stellar performances, gripping storytelling and breathtaking stagecraft. The audience, enthralled by the spectacle, rewarded the cast with a standing ovation at the end of each show.

Apart from being a dedicated performer, Vanya Bhatt, who hails from Surat in Gujarat, is also a trained Western Classical vocalist and musician. Recognised for her work in Haveli Sangeet, she has also released devotional music, including Baajat Aaj Badhai Gokul Mein. 

The production of My Fair Lady was a collaborative effort of Christ University’s drama department, featuring a talented ensemble cast and a dedicated crew who worked tirelessly to bring the classic musical to life. With impeccable direction, detailed costumes, and an enchanting musical score, the play proved to be a resounding success.

The overwhelming response from the audiences, coupled with standing ovations on both nights, highlighted the production’s impact and showcased the university’s commitment to nurturing performing arts. As the curtains came down on My Fair Lady, the echoes of applause and admiration remained, ensuring that this performance will be remembered for years to come.

Surat: Renowned henna artist and founder of Mehndi Culture, Nimishaben Parekh, captivated the international audience at the three-day Henna Huddle conference held in London from January 24 to 26, 2025. She not only demonstrated innovative henna designs but also provided insightful guidance on building a career in Mehndi art. Her unique presentation of Warli art-inspired henna designs received widespread appreciation.

The Henna Huddle conference, held at the Hilton Hotel, offered a global platform for henna artists. Nimishaben shared her experience, stating, "I was invited to teach henna art, focusing particularly on Warli art, an ancient Indian folk art. I began incorporating Warli art into henna designs several years ago. This traditional art form, symbolizing Indian culture, was immensely appreciated by participants. Many artists from across the globe expressed their interest in exploring new ideas through Warli art."

Nimishaben emphasized that her mission is to preserve the beautiful Warli culture by promoting its words, knowledge, significance, and aesthetics through Mehndi designs.

Apart from Warli art, she conducted sessions on two additional topics. The first covered the fundamental principles of henna art, focusing on the basics of Mehndi designs and their creative aspects. The second session showcased floral designs, where she offered creative insights into crafting henna designs inspired by roses, lotuses, and other flowers. These sessions received an overwhelming response from the attendees.

Reflecting on her journey, Nimishaben shared, "In 2018, I was also invited to teach Warli and Kolam art, and this is my second opportunity to participate in this esteemed event. The conference drew participants from diverse countries, including the USA, Spain, the Netherlands, and Prague. It was a proud moment to present the age-old Warli art on an international stage, and I am thrilled to see the interest from international event organizers in showcasing Indian cultural art globally."

Nimishaben Parekh's contribution to the Henna Huddle conference not only showcased the versatility of Mehndi art but also highlighted the potential of traditional Indian art forms in gaining global recognition.
