Ganguly stated that while he wishes to see more Test matches at Eden Gardens, he is also pleased that traditional format matches are being played at other centers across the country.

As per agency report, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced the schedule for the 2026-27 domestic season. Under this schedule, the matches against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy will not take place at traditional centers like Kolkata and Mumbai. Instead, these matches will be held from January 21 to February 25 in Nagpur, Chennai, Guwahati, Ranchi, and Ahmedabad.

Ganguly mentioned that it is always nice to see big Test matches at Eden Gardens. As an administrator and former player, he wishes for more matches to be held there. However, he noted that they recently hosted a Test against South Africa, followed by T20 World Cup matches and currently IPL matches are also being played.

He further stated that while everyone wants more matches at Eden, it is important to understand that other grounds should also get opportunities. There are many grounds in the country with better facilities that should also host international matches.

Guwahati has recently emerged as a Test center, having hosted its first Test in November 2025, and is set to host its second Test within a year. Additionally, a Test match was played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad last October. On the other hand, the last Test at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium was held in November 2024. According to the schedule, ODI matches will be played in Kolkata and Mumbai against Zimbabwe in early 2027, while a match against Sri Lanka is proposed in Delhi this December.

Ganguly emphasized that there are now good grounds and facilities available across the country. He cited cities like Chennai, Guwahati, and Ranchi as examples where it is nice to see Test matches being played. He believes it is essential to conduct matches at different grounds to spread cricket to every corner of the country, thereby expanding the reach of the sport.

Speculation in sections of the media has suggested that the upcoming tour of Australia could be their last in ODIs. When asked about this, Ganguly said he had no information on such matters and therefore could not comment. However, he emphasised that performance should be the key factor in deciding the length of their careers.

According to Ganguly, anyone performing well should keep playing. He praised both Kohli and Rohit for their achievements in limited-overs cricket, calling their records in the format extraordinary. Both players have retired from Tests and T20 Internationals but have not yet clarified their plans for the 2027 World Cup.

India’s ODI series in Australia will begin on October 19, with matches scheduled in Perth, Adelaide, and Sydney. This will be followed by a home series against South Africa in December, consisting of three ODIs. In 2026, the Indian team is also set to play two ODI series against New Zealand and further series against Afghanistan, England, and the West Indies.

As per agency report, speaking about the upcoming T20 Asia Cup starting in Dubai on September 9, Ganguly called India strong contenders for the title. He noted that the break after five demanding Test matches in England was much-needed for the players, who had also played in the IPL before the Tests. He believes India’s ODI side is even stronger than its Test unit and will be very difficult to beat on Dubai pitches.

On Shubman Gill’s future as Test captain, Ganguly praised the young leader and said he has a bright future ahead. He also revealed his readiness to return to cricket administration, confirming that he will file his nomination for the post of Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president if members wish so. Ganguly previously served as CAB president from mid-2015 until October 2019 before taking over as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Despite accumulating an impressive 18,575 runs across 113 Tests and 311 One Day Internationals, Ganguly feels his inability to convert many promising innings into three-figure scores remains one of his biggest disappointments.

As per agency report, Ganguly’s reflection came during an interview when he was asked what advice he would give to his younger self. In response, the left-handed batsman admitted he should have scored more runs and converted more of his 80s and 90s into centuries. Statistically, Ganguly fell between the 80 to 99-run mark as many as 30 times in his career. Had those innings been converted, he could have ended with over 50 centuries to his name.

Ganguly also revealed that when he is alone at home, particularly when his wife is away in London, he often re-watches videos of his old innings on YouTube. Watching those clips reminds him of how close he came to scoring more centuries, with several dismissals occurring just short of the milestone. Though he admits he can no longer change the past, the memories still linger.

Throughout his career, Ganguly notched up 72 half-centuries in ODIs and 35 in Tests. As a captain, he also had to make several tough calls, including team selections. One such decision he continues to regret is dropping legendary leg-spinner Anil Kumble on certain occasions, despite acknowledging Kumble’s brilliance as a player.

Discussing rivalries and personal challenges, Ganguly named Australia as his favorite team to compete against, citing the intensity and competitiveness of those matches. Among bowlers, he considered Australian pace legend Glenn McGrath as the most dangerous he faced during his career.

Ganguly’s reflections underline the fine margins in professional sport and the emotional weight of missed milestones, even for players who have achieved greatness. His candid admission offers a rare glimpse into the internal thoughts of one of India’s most iconic cricketers.

“I first met Sachin when he was 14 years old at the MRF Pace Academy and over time we would go on to spend 6-7 months in a year together and developed a close friendship and trust over time.”

“As a cricketer, he was a far superior cricketer than me, and that is something I strongly believe in. To raise your game, you must partner with those better than you and we continue to be very close friends,” said Ganguly in an episode of the Champions Sports-Cast podcast hosted by DreamSetGo.

Ganguly made his debut for India in 1992, before ending his international career in 2008. He revealed how he got into playing cricket while growing up in Kolkata.

“For me, playing sports was a way out and to get away from my mom who always wanted me to study. I actually started playing football and realised that I had tremendous ball sense, probably attributing it to being from Kolkata.”

“I started playing cricket because of my brother and would play in a 7-a-side cricket game in our backyard. It was because of these tennis ball matches, that I was able to absorb the game sense, and touch from a very young age.”

Under his captaincy, India got in many young players and Ganguly even captained India to a runners-up finish in the 2003 Men’s ODI World Cup. “For me, leadership is about managing people because everyone's different. At the end of the day, I cannot win cricket games alone. I need the 10 players next to me to drive towards that goal.”

“So I always looked to manage different personalities and try to ensure they played on the field where it mattered. I would just be kind to all my players and if there were ever mistakes, I would find a way to hide it. And just got them to have enough trust in me over time so that they gave the best for the team,” he stated on his leadership mantra.

Ganguly, a former BCCI and CAB President, called Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and Allan Border as his cricketing idols.

“In 1983, when India won the World Cup, Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev were the people I hoped to emulate as it was a big turning moment in our lives and the country. Apart from these two, Allan Border was an idol of mine that I always hoped to meet and I was lucky to meet all three of them.”

Ganguly, currently a Director of Cricket with IPL franchise Delhi Capitals, also expressed his admiration for legendary Argentina footballer Diego Maradona.

“I remember I first met him at an interview he was doing with the media and I'm not exaggerating one word when I say it was a 20-minute interview and through it all, he was juggling a ball with his left leg and didn't drop it once. I’ve seen Messi, Ronaldo & even Pele play but Maradona was special, he was blessed by the Almighty.”

After making his international debut in an ODI match against the West Indies in the 1992 Benson and Hedges World Series, Ganguly served the country for 16 glorious years.

The left-hander batter went on to be recognised as one of the greatest batters to have come out of India, particularly in ODIs. He scored 7212 runs in 113 Tests at an average of 42.17 with 16 centuries. In ODI cricket, Ganguly played 311 matches, scoring 11,363 runs at an average of 41.02 with 22 centuries.

However, it was as captain that Ganguly is remembered the most though. He took over the reins when India were still recovering from the aftermath of the match-fixing scandal of 2000 and famously led them to victory at home over Steve Waugh's world-beating Australian team in a Test series. This included the memorable win at the Eden Gardens where India prevailed despite being forced to follow on.

He also led India to the final of the 2003 World Cup and to the final of the 2002 Champions Trophy, where India were eventually declared joint winners with Sri Lanka as the final was washed out due to rain.

Most importantly, Ganguly under his captaincy, gave opportunity and backed a large pool of talented players, who became big match-winners for India. Later, he also served as the BCCI president from 2019 to 2022 and took very key decisions during his tenure.

"424 intl. matches, 18575 intl. runs, 38 intl. centuries. Here's wishing former #TeamIndia Captain and former BCCI President @SGanguly99 a very Happy Birthday," tweeted BCCI's from its official handle.

"Happy Birthday, Dada! May the almighty bless you with good health and prosperity. Have a great year ahead and I look forward to seeing you soon - @SGanguly99 #HappyBirthdayDada," said BCCI secretary Jay Shah in a tweet.

Meanwhile, legendary Sachin Tendulkar went down memory lane and shared an old picture of him with Ganguly while celebrating a moment on the field.

"Dadi is one man who would even celebrate his birthday on the offside. That’s how much he loved the offside. Happy birthday, my friend! @SGanguly99," wrote Tendulkar.

On the other hand, former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh wished Ganguly with a playful caption on Twitter.

"When you’re planning the next prank with dada without him knowing that he is the one who will actually be pranked. Happy birthday #dadi! Loads of love always @SGanguly99," tweeted Yuvraj.

Meanwhile, former India batter Wasim Jaffer said Ganguly took Indian cricket to new heights while wishing the former skipper on his birthday.

"This Jersey, this era will always be special for Indian cricket fans. Happy Birthday to the man who led India to new heights during this era. Wish you a wonderful year full of happiness and good health Dada @SGanguly99," Jaffer wrote on Twitter along with an old picture of Ganguly in the iconic jersey.

"Happy birthday dada @SGanguly99. Have a super birthday and a great year ahead with good health, fortune and eternal bliss !," tweeted current IPL chairman and former BCCI treasurer Arun Singh Dhumal.

"Tiger , prince of kolkata , Captain Happy Birthday Dada .. Light it, love it, live it .. lots of love .. @SGanguly99," said former India spinner Harbhajan Singh in his tweet.

India wicket-keeping batter Dinesh Karthik also wished Ganguly, calling him a legendary cricketer and a remarkable leader.

"Many happy returns of the day to a legendary cricketer and a remarkable leader, @SGanguly99. Wish you the best always, Dada!,” Karthik posted on his Twitter account.
