The Aravalli Range, India’s oldest mountain system, is facing an alarming ecological crisis as unchecked human intervention and illegal activities threaten its very existence. Stretching across north-west India, the Aravallis play a crucial role in maintaining environmental balance, making their conservation no longer a matter of choice but an urgent necessity.

According to a report by Vision IAS, the significance of the Aravalli hills extends far beyond their geographical spread. The mountain range acts as a natural barrier against the expansion of the Thar Desert. Continued degradation of the Aravallis could accelerate desertification, increasing the risk of dust storms and prolonged droughts across vast parts of northern India, including the Delhi–NCR region.

The report further highlights that the Aravalli region is a major biodiversity hotspot and serves as a critical groundwater recharge zone. For states such as Haryana, Rajasthan, and Delhi, the range functions like a natural “water tower,” helping arrest rapidly declining groundwater levels. In addition, the forests and rocky terrain of the Aravallis act as an important carbon sink, absorbing carbon dioxide and supporting air quality at a time when climate change poses growing challenges.

Despite their ecological importance, the Aravallis have suffered extensive damage due to illegal mining, unregulated urban expansion, and large-scale deforestation. Environmental experts warn that without strong legal enforcement and active community participation, the degradation could soon become irreversible.

Initiatives such as the “Great Green Wall of India” and strict interventions by the Supreme Court are being viewed as rays of hope for the revival of the Aravalli ecosystem. Conservationists stress that protecting the Aravalli Range is essential not only for preserving wildlife habitats but also for securing a safe and sustainable future for millions of people dependent on the ecological services this ancient mountain system provides.

Dr. THEJO KUMARI AMUDALA

One plant gives life to atleast 100 members. This year, the theme for World Environment Day is “Eco-Conscious Living for a Sustainable Future.” It calls for individuals, communities, and nations to adopt more sustainable practices in their daily lives to reduce their environmental impact and create a healthier planet for future generations.

As we mark World Environment Day 2024, it is crucial to reflect on the progress made and the challenges that lie ahead. While there have been significant advancements in renewable energy, conservation efforts, and sustainable practices, much more needs to be done to address the pressing environmental issues facing our planet.

Governments, businesses, and individuals must work together to implement policies and practices that promote sustainability, protect natural resources, and mitigate climate change. This includes investing in renewable energy, reducing waste and pollution, conserving biodiversity, and promoting sustainable agriculture and consumption.

On this World Environment Day, let us all commit to taking meaningful actions to protect our environment and create a more sustainable future for all. Together, we can make a difference and ensure that future generations inherit a healthy and thriving planet.

Let World Environment Day 2024 be a catalyst for positive change and a reminder of our shared responsibility to protect and preserve the environment for the well-being of all life on Earth.

Dr. Thejo Kumari Amudala has become the world’s first woman to receive the prestigious “Missile Man” Award. Named after Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, India’s renowned Missile Man.

Dr. Amudala’s journey from the educational confines of government schools in Tirupati to the world’s leading business schools is a testament to her resilience and dedication.

Her academic and professional journey is marked by numerous accolades, including the Nelson Mandela Global Peace Award, Padma Bhushan, and the Gandhi Peace Award. She has also won Ms. Universe Winner 2022 title. Below is her article for world environment day.

These small businesses are not only leading producers and sellers of electric two-wheelers but also major employers in this emerging sector.

EV 2W are the most convenient and least polluting vehicles that can be used for daily commuting and can help carve the carbon footprint on the environment to a great extent and Sampoorn EV as the only EV Ecosystem platform works not only in helping the EV OEMs but also in creating the education and awareness among the public at large towards the usage of EV 2W for daily commuting needs which is both environment friendly as well as pocket friendly.

Dr. SHAHIR Y. BAJOWALA

Entrepreneur, engineer, and Renaissance man Dr. Shahir Y. Bajowala. From his many interests to his award-winning writings, rare stamp and coin collections, photography, and astronomy, his life is full of discovery and success. His Ph.D. in business administration complements his mechanical engineering expertise. Here are his views on the World Environment Day.

Every year on June 5th, people worldwide celebrate World Environment Day to bring attention to the critical need to preserve our planet. The theme for this year, “Reduce, Recycle, Reuse,” really speaks to me because I’m a business owner and a deeply committed photographer. All of the stunning natural landscapes I photograph—from lush forests to perfect beaches—are in danger of disappearing unless we take sustainable measures to protect them.

I try to remember the effect that my work as a photographer has on the environment at all times. I want to lessen my environmental impact by following the three R’s: reduction, recycling, and reusing. Selecting digital portfolios instead of printed ones, utilizing rechargeable batteries, and reducing single-use plastics are all mindful choices that contributing to waste reduction. A considerable decrease in waste is achieved by the cumulative effect of these minor adjustments.

One more potent weapon in my sustainability arsenal is recycling. Film canisters and paper are among the many used photographic materials that I always recycle correctly. In addition, I support the circular economy and help reduce demand for virgin resources by partnering with eco-friendly printing companies that use soy-based inks and recycled paper.

Maybe the most imaginative part of sustainability is finding new uses for old things. Instead of throwing out used tools, I find new uses for them. Not only does this help the environment, but it also gives my projects a special, retro vibe. In my line of work, I advocate for clients to think about renting or buying used equipment. This helps spread the message of reusing things and reduces the demand for new products.

PRAVEEN MAURYA

As we mark World Environment Day, the stark reality of our planet’s challenges comes into sharp focus. Climate change is intensifying, bringing unprecedented weather extremes, rising sea levels, and threatening biodiversity. Our ecosystems are strained by deforestation and pollution, endangering both nature and humanity.

In response, the I-Help Foundation in Goa has been a catalyst for change. For eight years, we’ve led impactful initiatives, including planting over 51,4037 trees to combat deforestation and hosting beach cleanup drives that have removed tons of plastic waste. These efforts not only restore our environment but also raise public awareness about the importance of conservation.

To tackle these issues, we must embrace sustainable practices. Reducing plastic use, supporting renewable energy, and fostering community awareness are essential steps. By working together and taking decisive action, we can protect our planet and ensure a sustainable future for all. Let’s make every day Earth Day.

The writer of this article, Mr. Praveen has founded I-Help Foundation Goa, with the Vision of creating a Self-Reliant Society Powered by Selfless Individuals. The foundation is a registered non-governmental organization and one of the actively involved Youth Volunteering organizations working in the Social Field for the Upliftment of underprivileged people across Goa.

SONU PRASAD

Sonu Prasad is the founder of Wellwiser, a foundation committed to helping people take control of their mental health and become architects of their destinies. Their goal is to empower people and talk about various mental health issues, that are not openly talked about in family, among peers, or in media.

The foundation is also working towards enhancing the environment by implementing large-scale tree-planting initiatives and promoting sustainable waste management practices. Through community engagement and education, the foundation fosters eco-friendly behaviors and supports conservation efforts. The founder has explained below different strategies to improve environmental problems.

Strategies to Improve Environmental Issues:

Promote Renewable Energy: Shift to solar, wind, and hydro power.

Reduce Plastic Use: Encourage reusable materials.

Conservation Initiatives: Protect forests and wildlife habitats.

Sustainable Agriculture: Advocate for organic farming.

Reduce Carbon Footprint: Promote public transport and electric vehicles.

Wellwiser Foundation’s Contribution: The Wellwiser Foundation leads tree-planting drives, funds renewable energy projects, and educates communities on sustainable practices, making significant strides in combating environmental challenges and fostering a greener future.

Dr. OMKAR PRASAD BAIDYA

Dr. Omkar Prasad Baidya, born on December 3, 1984, in Agartala, Tripura, India, is a distinguished figure renowned for his multifaceted contributions as an author, educationist, physician, and philosopher. He is currently working at the Medical Institute, Kolkata, and serving as a faculty member for Physiology at ESIC-PGIMSR and ESI Medical College in Patna. Dr. Baidya has established himself as an expert in both healthcare and education.

He also shared his views on saving the environment.

World Environment Day is celebrated annually on 5th June, to give importance to the protection of the environment. The environment means species, climate, weather, ecosystem, and other living organisms, like animals, plants, and trees.

Humans are nature’s best creation. Human morality and virtues like compassion, and respect towards nature, can play important roles in the prevention of unnecessary destruction of nature like trees, plants, animals, etc all these ultimately not only affect nature creation, and the ecosystem but also lead to climate change, global warming, which ultimately can lead to soil erosion, flood, natural disaster, loss of ecological system, etc.

Thus, role of trees and plants in prevention of global warming, and climate changes are immense. Thus, we should promote plantation of trees, and plants, and should prevent unnecessary and unwanted destruction of natural resources and trees, plantation and all these not only promote conservation of natural resources, but also promote prevention of natural calamities, disaster, climate changes, global warming. Protection and preservation of natural resources can promote human health, and prevent from many diseases, and also human beings always depend on natural resources like trees, plants and animals etc for mantainance of basic need like food, clothing, shelter and housing.

DAME Dr. MUNNI IRONE

Dame Dr. Munni Irone, an eminent figure based in Beverly Hills, is globally celebrated as a beacon of peace. She is a seasoned author, celebrity coach, humanitarian, human rights advocate, and spiritual guide. Her unwavering commitment to fostering peace and prosperity is felt both locally and internationally, defining her as a pivotal force in the quest for global harmony.

Among her notable contributions are the establishment of multiple organizations dedicated to various aspects of peace-building. In 2015, she founded Art4PeaceAwards, a non-profit foundation that honors individuals leading efforts for peace worldwide.

On this World Environment Day, she has shared her respective thoughts on strategies to improve the environment. Have a look below.

World Environment Day, celebrated on June 5th, is a global initiative to encourage environmental protection. This year’s theme emphasizes ecosystem restoration, urging everyone to combat climate change and biodiversity loss. Strategies to raise awareness include organizing community clean-ups, hosting educational workshops, leveraging social media for eco-friendly campaigns, and collaborating with schools for environmental projects.

Gandhinagar - On the occasion of World Environment Day, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel visited the Namo Vad Forest in Gandhinagar on Wednesday, where he inspected and planted saplings. This visit is part of the ongoing celebrations of 75 years of India's independence under the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav initiative.

The Namo Vad Forest, named after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's fondness for banyan trees, was inaugurated by Chief Minister Patel on March 21, 2022, with the planting of a banyan sapling. The project aims to develop 75 Namo Vad Forests in 33 districts of Gujarat, promoting environmental conservation in a path-breaking manner.

During his visit, the Chief Minister received a briefing on the flora and arrangements at the site. Principal Secretary of the Forest and Environment Department, Sanjeev Kumar, provided detailed information, noting that 82 Namo Vad Forests have been developed across the state, surpassing the initial goal of 75. Each forest now contains 175 banyan saplings, with plans for further densification.

The Namo Vad Forest in Gandhinagar spans one hectare and nurtures around 6,500 plants, including various species of small, large, and flowering plants. These plants are maintained using efficient water conservation methods such as drip irrigation and the Matka method. The site is also being developed as an eco-friendly picnic spot and tourist attraction, featuring facilities like a children's play area, yoga platform, and benches.

The visit was attended by Minister of State for Cooperation Jagdish Vishwakarma, Principal Secretary Sanjeev Kumar, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests U.D. Singh, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Social Forestry) A.P. Singh, MLA Ritaben, Mayor Hiteshbhai Makwana, and several other officials.

This initiative reflects Gujarat's commitment to environmental protection and sustainability, setting a precedent for future conservation efforts in the state.

As we celebrate World Environment Day, we are reminded of our shared responsibility to protect and preserve our planet.

India is the world’s 4th largest consumer of electricity and the world’s 3rd largest renewable energy producer with 40% of energy capacity installed in the year 2022 (160 GW of 400 GW) coming from renewable sources. In the last two decades, harnessing renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydroelectric power, biomass and geothermal energy has helped significantly in reduction of carbon footprint and to combat the climate changes.

The transition to green energy is not merely an option but an imperative for our survival and the well-being of future generations. The current technological advancements and Innovation plays a pivotal role in this transition. Advances in photovoltaic technology, efficient wind turbines, and energy storage solutions are revolutionizing how we generate and use power. These innovations not only provide sustainable energy solutions but also create economic opportunities and enhance the importance of green energy utilization.

However, the shift towards green energy requires collaborative approach. Individuals and organizations can contribute by adopting renewable energy plans, investing in energy-efficient appliances, and supporting eco-conscious businesses. There is an urgent need to build an ecosystem to address the need of raising concerns about global-warming. Creating awareness is equally important and by doing the same we can make people understand benefits of green energy. Our collective efforts can help reduce carbon footprints through switching home energy supply to green energy sources, encouraging adoption of solar panels for electricity, use of solar water heaters, switching to electric vehicles, and by using solar-powered technology gadgets. The adoption of use of LED lights, choosing energy-efficient appliances for heating and cooling solutions for household use greatly helps in reduction of energy consumption.

In today’s era, it is acceptance that we live in high-rise buildings and we feel lack of places to start with the plantation. There are still a number of ways to work towards environment and make this world and surroundings better than ever. One such way is by associating oneself with NGOs who have been working relentlessly for environment protection and always strive for greener future. Such NGOs work with great vision and common goals with impactful initiatives. They choose the places around you to conduct the plantation drive, invite participation in large groups, conduct environment awareness programs, encourage the adoption of green energy, and make life on our planet earth more sustainable.

The ‘Catch Foundation’ based in Ahmedabad is one such organization which started with such initiatives and has been working since a decade for tackling environmental issues. Mr. Parkash shows his active participation with great interest and expresses his gratitude in volunteering the events lead by the organization. By getting associated with such organizations, we can drive the societal change necessary for a sustainable future.

Let us seize this opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to environmental stewardship. Together, we can build a world where clean energy powers our homes, schools, and businesses, ensuring a healthier and more prosperous future for all. Happy World Environment Day!

But the general public or even media lack concern about environmental crimes. That is why the same uproar that is created in the country when there is a robbery, murder or in cases of crimes like domestic violence, is not created when a crime is committed in the field of environment. But if I share the statistics, you will realize that in our society and country, the crimes committed against the environment are as much as the crimes committed against humans. The irony is that society is less aware of environmental crimes, which is why verdicts in such cases take years in various courts in India.

The National Crime Records Bureau releases various statistics every year regarding the decline in crimes in the country. According to the statistics, until last year, there have been 88,400 cases related to environment in various courts of India, whose proceedings are going through extremely slowly. Also, new cases are being added to these figures every day. If the court has to dispose of all these cases, it will have to deliver judgments of 242 cases per day. Otherwise, environmental cases will be hanging, and justice will be pending for the next 34 years!

Before I give my point of view in this article I want to give few more facts. So that you can understand the importance of prompt delivery of environment related crimes and cases pending in court. India has more than ten different very important Acts for damage to the forests and the environment. Such as the Forest Act 1927 and Forest Conservation Act 1980, Wildlife Conservation Act 1927, Environment Protection Act 1986, Land Mining Act, Air and Water Pollution Prevention and Control Act, Noise Pollution Act and Cigarette and Tobacco Manufacturing Act. Apart from this, there are separate laws for wildlife and bird trafficking.

All these laws are created because there is a very large network that makes crores of rupees by damaging the forest environment and animal trafficking and poaching for their products. These networks are run by big mafias who have no value for the forests, wildlife, or the environment. Rather, they harm the environment for their personal gain and pose a grave threat to the safety of the lives of millions of people. The climate issues we are seeing today also have a huge contribution from such crimes. Because such crimes do not happen only in India, the world is plagued by such mafias. Due to which many rivers and seas of the world are polluted today, illegal land mining is taking place in many places of the world, the forests are being cut or burnt down indiscriminately and many species of plants and animals have been endangered or destroyed due to animal trafficking.

Whatever that is happening elsewhere in the world, we can not do anything about it. But when any such crime is registered in India, if the courts take swift action and punish the culprits severely, it will set an example in the society that the courts are very serious about environment protection. Otherwise, witnessing the environment-related cases that are pending in the courts, the illegal sand or mining mafia or those who pollute the rivers or those who pollute the air will get courage that the punishment or verdict will be delivered only if the proceedings are held in the court in such a case... with that philosophy that till that time we will make crores of rupees!

Finally, now it is very necessary to give priority to environment protection. Environmental protection is an issue with which the lives of millions of people are connected. In the last five years, we have experienced many disasters because of climate change. We have also realized that our monsoon pattern has now changed radically. Also the number of hot days in a year has increased tremendously. In all this, such greedy criminals have their contribution. They must be severely punished so that others will be afraid to commit crimes against the environment. Finally, even in this way, if forests, rivers, air, or our wildlife can be protected, then we must take steps in that direction. No one has the right to pollute or destroy our common wealth and resources.
