Sahil Sharma, a resident of Croydon, appeared in custody at Kingston Crown Court on Thursday, where he admitted murdering Mehak Sharma from Gurdaspur, Punjab.

Sharma is due to be sentenced at the same court on April 26, the Metropolitan Police said in a statement released on Saturday.

On October 29, 2023, Sharma dialled 999 and told the police operator that he had killed his wife at their home on Ash Tree Way.

Upon reaching, officers found Mehak unresponsive with catastrophic knife injuries to her neck, and despite the efforts of medics at the scene, she was pronounced dead around 20 minutes later.

A special post-mortem examination conducted on October 31, 2023, found that Mehak died due to a stab wound to her neck.

"Sahil Sharma's actions have devastated a family. In killing his wife, he has robbed her family of a loving daughter for reasons known only to himself," Detective Inspector Laura Semple from Metropolitan Police's Specialist Crime Command, said.

“While I am pleased that Mehak Sharma's loved ones will now be spared the experience of going through a trial, nothing can bring her back to them," Semple added.

Mehak's body was repatriated to her native Jogi Cheema village in Punjab in December, 2023 for last rites.

According to media reports, Mehak's mother accused Sharma of harassing, threatening, and physically abusing her daughter in London.

"Mehak was killed in her own home, the place where she should have been safest, by the person who should have loved and protected her. My thoughts today are with her family and loved ones," Detective Inspector Semple said.

The Merseyside Police said they were called to the News and Booze store, known locally as Sangha Newsagents, on Lower House Lane, Norris Green, at around 8.30 p.m. (local time) on Wednesday.

It was reported that a man had entered the shop at about 8 p.m., threatened the store assistant and demanded cash before opening fire and leaving the store empty handed.

The store assistant was not injured in the incident, but was left extremely distressed by the ordeal, the Merseyside Police said in a statement.

No damage was caused to the shop, which is owned by Indian national Harjoodh Kular, according to the UK Companies House.

The video of the man surfaced on social media in which he could be seen wearing a hoodie, black trousers and flip-flops, firing shots inside the shop.

Just before the man attacked the shop, the police received another call that shots had been fired outside the Showcase Cinema at the Stonedale retail park in Croxteth.

It was reported that a man armed with a gun entered the cinema complex and threatened two members of the staff in the foyer, before leaving.

When he got outside, he fired a number of shots in the air before escaping in a car. No one was injured in the incident and no damage was caused either.

At the time of the incident, majority of the people in the cinema were watching film screenings and they became aware of the incident when officers arrived at the scene and the complex was put into lockdown.

Following these two incidents, further reports were received that at about 10.20 p.m. the same day, gunshots were heard at a property on Malpas Road. No one was injured in the incident.

The man was arrested by the Armed Response Officers at 4.46 a.m. on Thursday when raids were carried out at a property in Fazakerley.

Assistant Chief Constable Jenn Wilson said: “The shocking and distressing impact these incidents will have on the shop assistant, the staff at the Showcase Cinema and those filmgoers who found themselves in a lockdown situation in the complex after shots were fired outside the cinema, and the residents of Malpas Road cannot be underestimated."

"Thankfully, incidents like this involving a single offender in three separate shootings in close proximity and in quick succession are extremely rare and this is the first time we have had to deal with an incident of this nature on the streets of Merseyside," Wilson added.

According to the police, when the officers arrested the man, he was aggressive and a Taser had to be deployed.

He has been taken into custody on suspicion of possession of Section 1 firearm with intent to endanger life and robbery, and has been taken to a police station in Merseyside.

The police said that high visibility patrols will remain in the area to reassure the members of the local community.

Aberconway House, a vast 1920s home near Hyde Park, will change hands after a sale was agreed by Dominika Kulczyk, daughter of the late businessman Jan Kulczyk, who was Poland’s richest man, Financial Times reported.

The property will be acquired by Serum Life Sciences, a UK subsidiary of the Poonawalla family’s Serum Institute of India, people familiar with the transaction said, it said.

The price tag makes Aberconway House the second-most expensive home ever sold in London and the biggest deal of the year, according to luxury property agents, Financial Times reported.

The top end of London’s property market is insulated from the impact of higher borrowing costs, which have slowed the wider UK housing market this year, because few buyers rely on mortgages.

Trophy properties in London have remained attractive to international buyers despite new transparency measures brought in to help target Russian money after the war in Ukraine, and the prospect of tax changes if the Labour party wins the next UK general election.

A person close to Serum Life Sciences said the Poonawalla family had "no plans" to move to the UK permanently, but that "the house will serve as a base for the company and family when they are in the UK". The London deal follows multimillion-pound investments in vaccine research and manufacturing facilities near Oxford, the person added, Financial Times reported.

The women were all carriers of the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene alterations, which puts them at a lifetime higher risk of ovarian cancer.

Risk-reducing surgery for these patients, known as a bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO), is the only proven way to reduce ovarian cancer mortality. It reduces ovarian cancer risk by at least 95 per cent.

Usually it is a standalone procedure, where the fallopian tubes and ovaries are removed. The first such case of a C-sec with the risk-reducing RRSO to reduce ovarian cancer risk was done in 2018 by a team at the University College London Hospital (UCLH).

However, the study, published in Obstetrics and Gynecology details case reports of four women, carrying the BRCA gene alteration and who were due to have a C-sec.

All four women, between 40 and 45 years old, were receiving maternity care at UCLH between March 2018 and March 2022. To be considered for the procedure, the women had to be over 35 or 40 years old for the BRCA1 and BRCA2 alterations respectively, and not planning any further children.

All four surgeries went well and none of the women had serious post-surgical complications, said the researchers at UCLH.

Patients did not need to stay in hospital any longer than they would have after a C-sec alone. There is a theoretical possibility of greater blood loss with risk-reducing surgery at the time of C-sec delivery -- but there was no evidence that this was a problem in these cases.

"Offering the two-in-one surgery could prove very beneficial to other women at high risk of ovarian cancer, who would then avoid the need for separate risk-reducing surgery. We were delighted to hear from the four patients how happy they were to have had the combined procedure," said Professor Adam Rosenthal, consultant gynaecologist at UCLH Biomedical Research Center.

"The number of women who give birth by caesarean section is increasing around the world, as is the number of women who know they carry a gene alteration which increases their ovarian cancer risk. This means many more women may be suitable for the combined procedure.

"There is also a potential cost saving to any health care system by avoiding the need for two separate operations," Rosenthal said.

All women reported a high level of satisfaction with the two-in-one procedure. While the risk-reducing surgery results in infertility, women who have had eggs harvested prior to risk-reducing surgery may still be able to benefit from assisted reproduction.

It will also result in early menopause, so hormone replacement therapy is recommended until 51 years of age unless there are reasons not to give it, such as previous treatment for breast cancer, the researchers said.

According to law enforcement sources, Patel's disappearance had set off alarms when his friends in London reported him missing to the Wembley Police.

Based on available CCTV footage and the last traced location of his phone, authorities discovered that his phone had been located in the vicinity of London Bridge.

After a 10-day search, Patel's body was located near the London Bridge area.

Positive identification was achieved through DNA testing.

Patel had ventured to London approximately nine months ago in 2022 to pursue a Business Management course at a university.

Along the way, he encountered a series of difficulties, which seemingly culminated in the tragic end of his life.

Among these issues was a financial struggle, as he faced obstacles in paying his college fees.

Although his family back in India intervened to rectify the situation through an education loan, this episode underscored the complexities he was grappling with.

Furthermore, his educational journey was hampered by a lack of a work permit, a critical component for his future prospects.

Despite his family's concerted efforts, including hiring a consultant and making payments, the issue of securing a work permit remained unresolved.

Compounded by the impending expiration of his visa, Patel found himself burdened by the weight of financial and career-related stress, which police believe may have contributed to his unfortunate decision.

He had remained in consistent contact with his friends and family through regular phone calls.

However, the alarming turn of events began on August 10 when he suddenly ceased communication after his last conversation with a friend.

In that final call, he had revealed that he had booked a return ticket to India, scheduled for August 20.

Concerns escalated when his friends in London, unable to locate Patel at his residence, took the initiative to report his absence to the police.

The subsequent investigation led to a phone call with his family, deepening the sense of worry.

The family's efforts to find him yielded no results, prompting them to engage with law enforcement.

Frightened spectators were seen screaming and fleeing the Derby Kabaddi grounds in Alvaston at around 4 p.m. on Sunday after sounds of gunshots were heard, according to a video which has gone viral on social media.

Armed police rushed to the scene where a witness described a man being shot at and then attacked repeatedly with a sword, the Mirror newspaper reported.

Other witnesses said two rival gangs attacked each other with hockey sticks, which ruined the kabaddi tournament.

Some people said they were unable to get to their vehicles with several reporting they saw up to 20 police cars.

Derbyshire Police said in a statement on Sunday night: "We were called to a large-scale disturbance at Elvaston Lane, Alvaston, at 3.51 p.m. on Sunday. Three people have been injured, one seriously. They have all been taken to hospital. There is large police presence in the area and officers are expected to remain at the scene for some time."

The police said that anyone who witnessed the incident, or has any information, can contact them quoting the reference 739 of August 20.

“What was supposed to be a positive and welcome return of our Punjabi sport of kabaddi in Derby has sadly ended in shameful circumstances," Derby resident Jas Uksingh wrote on Facebook.

“Gang violence is not acceptable at sporting events, and should not be tolerated by the community. The UK Kabaddi Federation must take necessary steps and safeguards to stamp this thoughtless violence out from national tournaments. I hope those injured are not too serious and make a full recovery,” the post added.

The tournament was advertised on the England Kababbi Federation website as part of a series of summer events, local media reports said, adding that expert players from across the UK were brought for the event.

The local Derby team is known as Guru Arjan Dev Gurdwara Kabaddi Club, which has been playing the sport for over 30 years.

London, Aug 19 (IANS) An Indian-origin paediatrician in England, who helped catch a nurse convicted of murdering seven babies in her care, has said that the infants could have been saved had the hospital acted faster.

Dr Ravi Jayaram, a consultant at the Countess of Chester Hospital in Chester, said he repeatedly raised concerns about former colleague and nurse Lucy Letby for months before she was found guilty by the Manchester Crown Court on Friday.

“I do genuinely believe that there are four or five babies who could be going to school now who aren't," Jayaram told ITV News after the verdict.

Letby, 33, faced a total of 22 charges, accused of murdering seven babies and trying to kill 10 more at the hospital, and will be sentenced at the Manchester court on August 21.

Jayaram told ITV that he and other doctors started raising concerns after three babies died in June 2015 but were told to “draw a line” under the suspicions and apologise to her for alleged "victimisation".

They were also threatened with consequences, Jayaram claimed.

Eventually, it was in April 2017 that the National Health Service (NHS) trust allowed doctors to meet with a police officer, following which an investigation was launched and Letby was arrested.

Detective Superintendent Paul Hughes at Cheshire Constabulary told ITV News that Jayaram and his colleague Stephen Brearey had been instrumental in catching the killer.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) told the court that Letby used various methods to attack babies, including the injection of air and insulin into their bloodstream; the infusion of air into their gastrointestinal tract; force feeding an overdose of milk or fluids; and impact-type trauma.

The jury heard she had tracked the parents of her victims on social media, and was said to have kept souvenirs of her crimes, including children’s medical notes.

After her arrest in 2018, the police also found at her home a post-it note that read: “I am evil, I did this” and “I killed them on purpose because I'm not good enough. I am a horrible evil person”.

Tony Chambers, former Chief Executive of the Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust said: “All my thoughts are with the children at the heart of this case and their families and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time. I am truly sorry for what all the families have gone through."

He however, denied telling consultants they should "draw a line" under their suspicions of Letby.
