London, April 1 — Amid rising tensions in West Asia and global concerns regarding the Strait of Hormuz, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized that his government's focus is on the country's economic interests, energy security, and diplomatic solutions. He acknowledged public worries about inflation and daily expenses, stating that the government is already working on a five-point plan to address these issues.

Starmer assured that despite the circumstances, people would receive immediate relief. He mentioned that energy bills would decrease today due to measures taken in the budget, and prices are fixed until July, regardless of the situation in Iran. His statement directly addressed fears of a spike in global oil prices due to tensions in Hormuz.

Starmer also responded to US President Donald Trump's potential warning about exiting NATO, labeling it an attempt to exert pressure and noise. He stated that NATO is the most effective military alliance to date and that the UK is fully committed to it. He emphasized that he would make decisions with the country's interests in mind, regardless of pressure or noise.

According to Starmer, the UK is already active in this direction. The Foreign Secretary and Chancellor have engaged with their G7 counterparts, while the Defense Minister is in contact with partners in the Middle East. He noted that the UK has brought together 35 countries under a joint initiative for maritime security in the Gulf region.

Melbourne, November 4: Andrew Lownie, the author of an unauthorised biography of Britain’s former prince Andrew and his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson, has suggested that further uncomfortable disclosures are still to come, a prospect he believes could deepen the royal family’s difficulties. His book, Entitled, draws on several years of research and interviews with around 300 people, and was published at a time when Andrew’s public standing had sharply declined amid escalating controversy. The latest developments include reports that King Charles has removed his brother’s remaining royal patronages and asked him to vacate the Royal Lodge residence.

As per agency report, Lownie’s broader body of work has long dissected the monarchy’s flashpoints, including the saga of the Duke of Windsor’s 1936 abdication. In his new study, he frames the Andrew–Sarah story as one marked by early wounds, betrayals, excess, and the misuse of power, arguing that a pattern of poor judgment left both exposed to scandal.

A substantial portion of the book addresses Andrew’s association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, which Lownie says wrecked the prince’s public role. After a widely criticised 2019 appearance on the BBC’s Newsnight, in which Andrew rejected accusations made by Virginia Giuffre, he withdrew from official duties and has struggled to regain any public role since. Recent attention around Giuffre and the publication of her memoir, Nobody’s Girl, has kept the case in the headlines and, according to the book’s narrative, spurred the palace toward tougher steps involving Andrew’s status and housing.

The biography also revisits the prince’s business dealings following his naval career, when he served as a UK trade representative. The book also draws stylistic parallels between the Mountbatten-Windsor household and the Trump family’s brand of ostentation, pointing to the couple’s first marital home at Sunninghill as a “Trump-style” display of marble, trophies and grandeur. Public remarks by Donald Trump expressing sympathy for the couple’s situation are cited as part of that comparison.

Lownie concludes that the Andrew affair has inflicted serious reputational harm on the monarchy but argues that King Charles’s recent firmness has, for now, stabilised the institution. He casts the king as a more capable constitutional figure than many expected, while noting that Andrew’s semi-seclusion at Sandringham may or may not prevent fresh controversies. The book ultimately contends that the crown’s endurance may owe as much to public scepticism toward political leaders as to any affection for a scandal-tested royal family, leaving the institution intact even as it absorbs repeated shocks.

London. King Charles III’s embattled brother, Prince Andrew, has been formally removed from the official “Roll of the Peerage,” effectively stripping him of his royal titles and privileges. This move also requires him to vacate the grand “Royal Lodge” residence within the Windsor Castle estate, Buckingham Palace confirmed on Friday.

As per agency report, the Roll of the Peerage is a public record listing members of the royal and noble families of England, Scotland, Ireland, Great Britain, and the United Kingdom. The palace stated that King Charles began the process of withdrawing all royal titles and honours from Prince Andrew on Thursday evening. This came days after Andrew announced his decision to renounce the title of Duke of York and other honours amid ongoing scrutiny over his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Despite his voluntary renunciation, controversy continued to grow as British lawmakers debated the significant public expenses incurred for Andrew’s lavish royal lifestyle. The Buckingham Palace statement read that His Majesty has now formally initiated the process of revoking all of Prince Andrew’s royal titles and honours.

According to the statement, Andrew will now be known simply as “Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.” His lease on the Royal Lodge, which had provided him with legal residency protection, has been terminated. Formal notice has been issued for him to vacate the property and relocate to a privately funded residence within King Charles’s Sandringham Estate.

The statement added that these actions were deemed necessary as Andrew continues to deny the allegations against him. It further emphasized that His Majesty’s sympathies remain with victims of all forms of abuse.

Under this process, King Charles issued a royal warrant to Lord Chancellor David Lammy, allowing the titles’ revocation to proceed without requiring parliamentary approval. The titles and honours being withdrawn include Prince, Duke of York, Earl of Inverness, Baron Killyleagh, His Royal Highness, the Order of the Garter, and Knight Grand Cross of the Victorian Order.

Royal household sources indicated that Andrew is expected to vacate the 30-room Royal Lodge soon and move to a smaller property on the Sandringham Estate, which the King will personally finance.

The action follows the posthumous release of Virginia Giuffre’s memoir Nobody’s Girl, which recounts her life as a “sex slave” for Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. Giuffre, who died by suicide in April this year at her farmhouse in Western Australia, had accused Prince Andrew of sexually assaulting her on three occasions when she was 17. Andrew has consistently denied these allegations.

In a recent family statement, Giuffre’s relatives said she ensured her fight for justice would continue even after her death, adding that her courage and truth “brought a British prince from the heights of royalty to the ground of accountability.”

New Delhi, May 7, 2025 — While the recently concluded India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) does not contain provisions to counter Britain’s proposed carbon tax, India has reserved the right to retaliate or rebalance concessions if domestic exports are adversely impacted in the future.

As per agency report, the UK government announced in December 2023 its intention to implement the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) from 2027, aimed at placing a carbon price on imported goods in sectors such as steel, aluminum, fertilizers, and cement. The Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) estimates that the implementation of this carbon levy could affect Indian exports worth approximately USD 775 million to the UK.

Officials have clarified that the India-UK FTA does not presently include any safeguard mechanism against CBAM. However, given the current lack of specific legislation and the ongoing uncertainty regarding the tax’s structure, India has formally preserved its right to undertake reciprocal measures or seek rebalancing of trade concessions in the future.

After the European Union, the UK will become the second major economy to introduce a carbon pricing mechanism on imports. The levy, once implemented, may range between 14 to 24 percent of the import value, especially as free allowances under the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) are phased out.

CBAM is initially set to apply to imports of iron and steel, aluminum, fertilizers, hydrogen, ceramics, glass, and cement — sectors where India holds a competitive export edge.

India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal raised concerns over this issue during his recent visit to London, stating that if the UK proceeds with the tax, India may consider a calibrated response.

The Indian government maintains that the integrity of its exports must not be compromised under the guise of environmental compliance and will continue to monitor the policy developments in the UK closely.

New Delhi, May 6 – India and the United Kingdom have officially concluded their long-awaited Free Trade Agreement (FTA) along with a dual contribution agreement, a move expected to significantly enhance bilateral trade, investment, economic growth, and job creation. The announcement was made following a phone conversation between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. He stated that the FTA and dual contribution deal will promote innovation and serve as catalysts for economic cooperation.

They noted that the agreements represent a landmark moment in the bilateral relationship, particularly between two of the world’s major open market economies.

London, February 25: Karnataka-based writer, activist, and lawyer Banu Mushtaq's short story collection Heart Lamp has been named on the longlist for the prestigious International Booker Prize 2025. The collection, originally written in Kannada, was translated into English by Deepa Bhasthi.

This marks the first time a Kannada book has made it to the longlist for the renowned Booker Prize, highlighting a significant achievement for regional Indian literature on the global stage.

The judging panel praised Heart Lamp for its evocative storytelling and deep moral resonance. The collection of 12 stories, originally published between 1990 and 2023, offers a poignant glimpse into the lives of marginalized communities within South India's Muslim society. London, February 20: Business tycoon Vijay Mallya faced a setback as his attempt to overturn a bankruptcy order imposed by the UK High Court three years ago was rejected. The Chancery Division of the London Appellate Court resumed hearings on Wednesday, with Justice Anthony Mann dismissing Mallya’s plea to stay the bankruptcy proceedings.

Mallya, who is wanted in India on fraud and money laundering charges, did not attend the hearing. He was represented by Kartik Mittal and Mark Watson-Gandy from Jaewala & Company. The appeal pertains to an estimated £1.05 billion in unpaid loans related to the now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines, claimed by a consortium of Indian banks led by the State Bank of India (SBI).

Justice Mann stated, "I see no good reason to stay the matter pending the outcome of Indian proceedings." He emphasized that considerable time had already been "wasted" on the appeal. Mallya's attempt to introduce new evidence was also dismissed as irrelevant, including a statement by Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in December 2024, mentioning that ₹14,131 crore had been recovered for public sector banks (PSBs) through the sale of Mallya's assets.

The current appeals relate to Judge Michael Briggs' decision in the Insolvency & Companies Court (ICC), which authorized bankruptcy proceedings against Mallya initiated by Indian banks almost six years ago.

The legal battle in the UK is a part of the broader effort by Indian authorities to extradite Mallya, who has been residing in the UK since fleeing India in 2016. Despite India's extradition request being approved by the UK government in 2020, Mallya's asylum application in the UK has delayed his return to India to face legal proceedings.

Brisbane, December 16 – Former England cricketer and commentator Esha Guha issued an apology on Monday for her controversial remark referring to Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah as a "primate" during the third Test between India and Australia. London - Labour Party leader Keir Starmer, who recently achieved a historic victory in the UK general election, is set to become the next Prime Minister of Britain. Starmer, who once lived in poverty and had his education funded by others, is now poised to take residence at 10 Downing Street.

Keir Starmer, 61, has promised to work for all citizens, regardless of their voting choices. "I will work for the interests of every person," he said. "I will speak for you. I will fight for you every day. I am ready for change. The change is starting now. This is your democracy. Your community and your future. You have voted, and now it is time for us to deliver results."

Before leading the opposition, Starmer was a lawyer in England and Wales from 2008 to 2013. He became Labour Party leader in 2020, steering the party from a leftist stance to a more centrist approach. Representing the Hoborn and St Pancras constituency since 2015, Starmer has a working-class background. His father was a toolmaker, and his mother, a nurse, suffered from Still's disease, a rare autoimmune condition.

Starmer's education journey began at Reigate Grammar School, where a local council funded his fees until age 16. He was the first in his family to attend university, studying law at Leeds University and later at Oxford University. He became a barrister in 1987, specializing in human rights law, and worked in the Caribbean and Africa, representing prisoners facing the death penalty. In 1997, he represented the McLibel activists pro bono.

In 2008, Starmer was elected Director of Public Prosecutions, the most senior position in England and Wales for criminal prosecution. He became an MP in 2015 and served as Brexit Secretary on Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn's frontbench team. After Labour's defeat in the 2019 general election, Starmer became party leader in 2020, pledging to lead Labour "into a new era with confidence and hope."

Starmer's historic victory in the general election marks a significant milestone in his journey from a working-class background to the pinnacle of British politics. As he prepares to move into 10 Downing Street, the nation awaits the changes he promises to bring.

London, 16 May (HS): The United Kingdom has imposed strict control measures on all spices imported from India. The action follows in the wake of an allegation of contamination against two Indian brands exporting spices.

Earlier, Hong Kong stopped sales of three spices manufactured by MDH and one by Everest. The spices allegedly had high levels of cancer-causing pesticide ethylene oxide. Singapore also initiated a recall of the Everest spices.

New Zealand, the US, and Australia announced investigations into the matter. MDH and Everest assert the safety of their products for consumption.
