London, Oct 24 – The Booker Prize Foundation on Friday announced the launch of a new literary honor titled the “Children’s Booker Prize,” aimed at recognizing outstanding contemporary fiction for children. The award will be decided jointly by a panel comprising both adult and child judges.

As per agency report, nominations for the inaugural edition will open in 2026, and the prize will be presented annually from 2027 onwards. The winner will receive a cash award of £50,000 (approximately Rs. 59 lakh).

The foundation stated that the prize will honor the best work of contemporary fiction written in or translated into English for readers aged eight to twelve, provided it is published in the United Kingdom and/or Ireland. The initiative marks the first major expansion of the Booker Prize family in two decades.

Booker Prize Foundation Chief Executive Gaby Wood described the new award as the organization’s most ambitious project in 20 years, expressing hope that its influence will endure for generations. She emphasized that the initiative represents more than a literary accolade, calling it “a movement that unites children, parents, teachers, and storytellers around the world.”

In collaboration with the AKO Foundation, at least 30,000 copies of shortlisted and winning titles will be distributed free of charge to ensure that more children have access to some of the world’s finest stories.

British author Penelope Lively is scheduled to deliver the keynote address on the newly introduced children’s award at this year’s Booker Prize ceremony on November 10 in London. Indian-origin author Kiran Desai has also been shortlisted for her latest novel “The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny.” Desai had previously won the Booker Prize in 2006 for her acclaimed novel “The Inheritance of Loss.”

London, May 21 – The English translation of Hridaya Deepa, a Kannada short story collection by author, lawyer, and social activist Banu Mushtaq, has been awarded the prestigious International Booker Prize 2025. The translated version, titled Heart Lamp, was recognized at a ceremony held on Tuesday night at London’s Tate Modern gallery.

As per agency report, Heart Lamp becomes the first work in Kannada to receive the £50,000 award, which is shared equally between the original author and the translator. Mushtaq and her translator, Deepa Bhasthi, were present together to receive the honor. Mushtaq described the win as a victory for diversity and a powerful moment for regional literature.

The collection, spanning more than 30 years of Mushtaq’s literary career from 1990 to 2023, comprises 12 poignant stories that explore the resilience, resistance, and wit of women living within patriarchal South Indian communities. The stories draw inspiration from a rich oral storytelling tradition and vividly depict personal and societal tensions with sharp humor, conversational style, and emotional depth.

Mushtaq emphasized that the book was born from the belief that no story is too small, and that every thread in the fabric of human experience carries the weight of the whole narrative. She added that in a world often bent on division, literature remains one of the few sacred spaces where individuals can truly connect, even if just for a few pages.

Translator Deepa Bhasthi expressed pride in her language and called the win a beautiful moment for Kannada literature. The jury chair, Max Porter, praised Heart Lamp as a groundbreaking piece that introduces something entirely fresh to English readers. He described the translation as revolutionary, weaving new textures into the plurality of the English language, while also challenging and expanding the very idea of translation.

Heart Lamp is also the first short story collection ever to win the International Booker Prize. New Delhi, April 18 – Former Chief Justice of India T S Thakur has declined to attend the launch of former Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) chief A S Dulat’s new book, citing the political controversy triggered by certain excerpts related to National Conference president Farooq Abdullah. The book, titled The Chief Minister and the Spy, was scheduled to be released on Friday at a ceremony where Justice (Retd.) Thakur was expected to officiate the launch.

As per agency report, Justice Thakur’s decision comes a day after Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah stated in Jammu that his father, Farooq Abdullah, would not be attending the launch. Farooq Abdullah had earlier publicly rejected Dulat’s claim that he had “personally supported” the abrogation of Article 370, the constitutional provision that had granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. Calling the claim baseless, Abdullah accused Dulat of seeking "cheap publicity" to promote his upcoming book.

The central government, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party, had abrogated Article 370 on August 5, 2019, and bifurcated the former state into two union territories. Dulat’s assertion that Abdullah privately backed this move has stirred political debate and media attention.

In a written response to Dulat's invitation, Justice Thakur expressed his discomfort with the unfolding controversy. He acknowledged having initially agreed to participate in the launch but stated that the media coverage surrounding the book's content, particularly references to Abdullah’s alleged remarks, had caused a political storm. Justice Thakur emphasized his longstanding personal rapport with the Abdullah family and clarified that he did not wish to be associated with promoting a book that the central figure in question had publicly disavowed.

Justice Thakur further noted that Farooq Abdullah was also supposed to participate in a discussion about the book alongside journalist Vir Sanghvi but is now unlikely to attend. He expressed regret for the inconvenience his withdrawal might cause to Dulat and the book’s publishers on the eve of the launch but hoped that his position would be understood in light of the sensitive circumstances.

London, February 25: Karnataka-based writer, activist, and lawyer Banu Mushtaq's short story collection Heart Lamp has been named on the longlist for the prestigious International Booker Prize 2025. The collection, originally written in Kannada, was translated into English by Deepa Bhasthi.

This marks the first time a Kannada book has made it to the longlist for the renowned Booker Prize, highlighting a significant achievement for regional Indian literature on the global stage.

The judging panel praised Heart Lamp for its evocative storytelling and deep moral resonance. The collection of 12 stories, originally published between 1990 and 2023, offers a poignant glimpse into the lives of marginalized communities within South India's Muslim society. The stories explore complex themes of identity, resilience, and humanity through richly layered narratives.
