The plantation comprises over 50 indigenous tree and shrub species, selected after detailed assessment of the Rayalaseema region’s soil profile and climatic conditions. The Miyawaki method, recognized globally for its effectiveness in developing dense, fast-growing forests, enables high sapling survival and rapid canopy formation compared to conventional plantation approaches.

The execution involved comprehensive soil conditioning, multi-layered planting patterns, organic mulching, and the installation of drip irrigation systems. As a result, the Miyawaki forest along NH-40 is projected to evolve into a compact and self-sustaining green belt within three to four years, requiring minimal maintenance thereafter.

Proven Outcomes from Previous Miyawaki Plantation

The current initiative builds upon the success of an earlier Miyawaki plantation undertaken by REPL and its partners along the same highway corridor. Approximately six months ago, 27,000 saplings were planted, which have since developed into a dense and flourishing green landscape.

This earlier plantation has already begun supporting biodiversity, evidenced by the return of birds, insects, and other native species, signalling the formation of a healthy micro-ecosystem. The positive outcomes from this intervention have reinforced confidence in the Miyawaki technique and guided the expansion of plantation efforts along NH-40.

Chilakaluripet December 5: Five engineering students lost their lives after the car they were traveling in collided with a truck in Chilakaluripet in the Palnadu district of Andhra Pradesh. 

The accident occurred late Thursday night on the new bypass road in Chilakaluripet. As per agency report, the collision took place when the truck driver allegedly slowed down his vehicle suddenly, leading to the fatal crash.

According to the police official, four of the students died on the spot, while another succumbed to injuries at a private hospital. The victims were traveling from Guntur to Penukonda in the Sri Sathya Sai district when the accident happened. Police have registered a case in connection with the incident under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad city police have arrested a key suspect accused of uploading pirated films on the official police website, causing substantial losses to film producers.

As per agency report, the accused has been identified as Ravi, who was allegedly operating from abroad and was taken into custody on Saturday after his return to India. He had reportedly challenged the police to arrest him, prompting intensified efforts to track him down. Film producers had earlier lodged complaints with the police, expressing concern over the growing threat of piracy and the financial damage it was inflicting on the industry.

According to the police, the accused allegedly hacked into the servers of digital companies and uploaded original copies of films on the website before their official release. This unauthorised early release of content resulted in considerable losses to filmmakers and the wider film industry. Police sources added that the full details of the case and the investigation will be officially shared with the media on Monday.

Kurnool (Andhra Pradesh), Oct 24 – At least twenty people were killed when a private bus traveling from Hyderabad to Bengaluru caught fire after colliding with a two-wheeler near Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh on Friday. Most of the victims died of burn injuries, and the deceased also included the motorcyclist, according to police officials.

As per agency report, the accident occurred near Chinnatekur village in Kurnool district when the motorcycle came under the bus after collision, causing the bike’s fuel tank lid to open. The leaking fuel ignited, setting the bus ablaze within minutes. The blaze spread rapidly, trapping several sleeping passengers inside. Police sources indicated that some bodies were charred beyond recognition, prompting the deployment of a forensic team to collect DNA samples for identification.

Kurnool Range Deputy Inspector General of Police Koya Praveen said that 19 burnt bodies had been recovered from the bus, while the motorcyclist’s remains were sent to the morgue. He stated that a full account of the casualties and survivors would be available only after a complete investigation and identification process. Officials reported that the bus door jammed due to an electrical short circuit, making it impossible for passengers to escape.

District Collector A. Siree informed that the bus was carrying 41 people, including the driver, of which 21 have been traced so far. Most survivors are aged between 25 and 35 years. Their condition is said to be stable and out of danger. Siree noted that several passengers could not escape as the accident occurred at night when they were asleep, and damaged wiring prevented the doors from opening immediately. Most of the passengers were residents of Hyderabad, she added.

Authorities initially believed that the bus was headed toward Hyderabad, but later confirmed it was traveling to Bengaluru. The police continued safety measures at the site by emptying the diesel tank of the burnt vehicle while a team of medical experts collected DNA samples from the remains. DIG Praveen said that the bus lacked fire safety measures, revealing serious lapses in safety compliance and emergency preparedness by the transport operator.

The tragic incident prompted reactions from top leaders across the country. President Droupadi Murmu expressed grief over the loss of lives and extended condolences to the bereaved families, praying for the speedy recovery of the injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed deep sorrow and announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased and Rs. 50,000 each to the injured from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed shock over the incident and said he had spoken with the district collector and superintendent of police to ensure medical care for the injured. He conveyed his condolences to the victims’ families and assured that all possible assistance would be provided.

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy also expressed deep grief and directed the collector and superintendent of police of Telangana’s Gadwal district to visit the site and oversee relief operations. The Telangana government has set up a helpline to assist families of the passengers who were on the ill-fated bus. Officials M. Sriramachandra and E. Chittibabu have been assigned to coordinate support for affected families.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar too expressed their condolences over the incident and offered support to the victims’ families.

The accident has raised serious concerns about passenger safety standards in long-distance private bus operations, especially during night journeys when emergency preparedness is often minimal.

Kendrapara (Odisha), May 16 – An Olive Ridley turtle tagged with a satellite-based tracking device at Gahirmatha beach in Odisha’s Kendrapara district has travelled nearly 1,000 kilometers in 51 days to reach the coast of Andhra Pradesh, a forest official said on Friday.

Before reaching Andhra Pradesh, the turtle passed through the marine waters of Sri Lanka, Puducherry, and Tamil Nadu, the official noted.

"The turtle travelled through the sea territories of Sri Lanka, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry before arriving at the Andhra Pradesh coast, covering a distance of approximately 1,000 km in 51 days," the official added.

Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) Prem Shankar Jha stated that the Wildlife Institute of India’s latest satellite tracking initiative detected the tagged turtle now swimming in the coastal waters of Andhra Pradesh.

In a similar case, a turtle tagged in Odisha four years ago recently returned to the coast of Ratnagiri in Maharashtra—about 3,500 km away—to lay eggs.

Olive Ridley turtles are also known to nest in large numbers near the Rushikulya river mouth in Ganjam district and Devi river mouth in Puri district.

According to officials, around 3,000 turtles are tagged with tracking devices every year. However, experts believe that at least one lakh turtles need to be tagged to gain better insights into their breeding biology, migration patterns, developmental rates, and feeding grounds.

Odisha’s forest department began the tagging initiative in 1999, and two tagged turtles were later spotted off the Sri Lankan coast. The project was suspended for some years but resumed in 2021 under the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI).

Between 2021 and 2024, approximately 12,000 turtles have been tagged in the nesting grounds near Gahirmatha and the Rushikulya river mouth, officials said.

Visakhapatnam, April 30 — A tragic incident unfolded in the early hours of Wednesday in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, when a wall at the Simhachalam Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple collapsed, claiming the lives of seven devotees. The state government confirmed the incident and has announced compensation for the victims' families.

As per agency report, the collapse occurred around 3:00 am near the shopping complex on the temple's ghat road, where devotees holding ₹300 tickets were queuing up. Heavy overnight rainfall is believed to have loosened the soil around the structure, causing the wall to give way. One person was also injured in the incident.

State Home Minister V. Anitha, who was present at the site, stated that preliminary investigations suggest the heavy rain had undermined the integrity of the structure. She assured that rescue operations were carried out promptly and without negligence. Officials have indicated that further investigation will determine the exact cause.

The deceased include three women and four men. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were deployed for the rescue operations. According to SDRF personnel, all eight people trapped under the debris were located, with seven declared dead on-site.

The tragedy has sparked condolences from national and state leaders. President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi both expressed grief on social media, extending their sympathies to the families of the deceased. Prime Minister Modi also announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹2 lakh each from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu held a video conference to assess the situation and ordered the immediate provision of medical assistance to the injured. He also announced a compensation package of ₹25 lakh for each deceased victim’s family and ₹3 lakh for the injured. In addition, he assured a contractual job in the Endowments Department for one family member of each victim.

Naidu has constituted a three-member inquiry committee comprising officials from the irrigation, municipal administration, and police departments to conduct a detailed investigation. He also reviewed the matter with Director General of Police Harish Kumar Gupta and other senior officials at his residence in Undavalli.

Leaders from other states, including Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, also expressed sorrow. Reddy announced plans to visit the bereaved families in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday and urged the government to provide the best medical support and compensation to the victims.

Endowments Minister Ramnarayan Reddy described the incident as deeply unfortunate and stated that safety standards in temples across the state would be re-evaluated and strengthened to prevent such incidents in the future.

The temple authorities confirmed that a comprehensive inspection is underway to assess structural weaknesses in the complex, particularly in areas exposed to adverse weather. The temple attracts a large number of devotees year-round, especially during festivals like Chandana Utsavam, which was being celebrated when the incident occurred.

Authorities have sealed the area and are expected to issue detailed findings after the committee’s investigation concludes. The incident has raised concerns over infrastructure safety in high-footfall religious sites across the state.

Vijayawada, March 21 – A casual breakfast meeting has paved the way for the revival of a long-delayed bus manufacturing plant by the Hinduja Group near Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh. The facility, originally announced in 2018 by Ashok Leyland, the world's fifth-largest bus manufacturer, had remained dormant following a change in state government.

The plant, with an annual production capacity of 4,800 buses, had its foundation stone laid in March 2018. However, construction came to a halt when the new administration led by YSR Congress Party came to power in 2019, replacing the government of then Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.

As per agency report, the project found fresh momentum last year when the political landscape shifted once again. Nara Lokesh, who now chairs the Cabinet Committee on Employment Generation, took notice of the stalled factory. In an effort to restart the initiative, he invited the Hinduja family for a breakfast meeting in Hyderabad on December 22, 2024.

Sources familiar with the development said the meeting was attended by Ashok Hinduja, Chairman of Hinduja Group of Companies (India), and Dheeraj Hinduja, Chairman of Ashok Leyland. The discussion led to a renewed commitment from the Hinduja Group to resume work on the facility.

The project was officially revived and the plant was inaugurated on March 19, 2025. Delays had earlier stemmed from administrative and local challenges under the previous government, but the new discussions removed these roadblocks.

The revival of the plant marks a significant boost for industrial activity and employment generation in the region, aligning with the state government’s focus on attracting investment and accelerating job creation.

Last week's severe flooding in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, has had a profound impact on the textile industry, particularly affecting businesses from Surat. Reports suggest that Surat-based textile merchants are facing potential losses amounting to approximately INR 50 crores due to waterlogged warehouses.

Surat’s textile businesses frequently ship goods to Vijayawada via 8 to 10 transportation services. From September 1 to 4, about 20,000 parcels were submerged in floodwaters reaching 5 to 7 feet inside the Vijayawada transport warehouses. The overall damage from the floods is feared to total up to INR 150 crores across various sectors.

Yuvraj Desale, the head of Surat Textile Goods Transport Association, shared that besides the transport warehouses, many large-scale traders also store their shipments in private warehouses, all of which have been devastated by the floods. He noted that significant consignments, including blankets from Panipat and men’s shirting and dhotis from Pali-Bhilwara in Rajasthan, were also affected, impacting numerous businesses throughout India.

Neeraj Singh from RK Transport highlighted the focus on insurance: "The Transport Association always advises traders to insure their goods. If the merchants had insured their cargo, the losses could have been mitigated." He expressed concern over the ability of some transporters to compensate for the losses, sharing an anecdote about a dispute where one transporter refused to pay their share, leading to out-of-pocket payments on his part.
