It is a lovely time of year to spend with loved ones and friends and spread happiness. However, it's also a great opportunity to impart important life skills to your kids.

Megha Chopra, entrepreneur and poet outlines six life lessons in life that one can impart to children on the celebrations of Diwali:

The victory of right over wrong: The victory of Lord Rama over the demon king Ravana serves as a reminder that good always triumphs over evil. The significance of justice, truth, and righteousness in our lives is emphasised by this festival. As we light up our hearts and homes with lights, we also teach our children to choose morality, kindness, and compassion over vice and darkness. Teach them to be a light in the world and to speak out against injustice.

Overcoming ignorance and fear: The victory over ignorance and fear is symbolised by the tale of Lord Rama's return to Ayodhya following his defeat of the demon king Ravana. Teach your kids that facing anxieties and overcoming challenges in life requires knowledge and fortitude. Assist them in realising that overcoming their worries and choosing wisely will result in success and personal development.

Value of selflessness: Another chance to instill in your children the value of selflessness is during Diwali. Laxman gave his all without asking for anything in return. Though he wasn't required to, he stayed with Ram. After leaving behind the aristocratic lifestyle and all its perks, Laxman slept for a continuous 14 years. Even though it seems impossible to locate someone similar to him right now, it is not impossible to apply Laxman's qualities in the actual world.

Beauty of Forgiveness: The life of Lord Ram is an example of the great beauty of forgiveness. He endured great hardships, but he was able to forgive everyone who had harmed him, including Ravana. His selfless pardon serves as a symbol of bravery and honesty, showing us that letting go of grudges and anger promotes inner serenity and spiritual development. As Lord Ram did, we can restore relationships, promote peace, and follow the path of righteousness by accepting pardon.

Families' unity and bonding: During Diwali, we may learn a lot from the Ramayana about Sita Mata's everlasting devotion and resilience in the face of hardship. Her unwavering love and support for Lord Rama serve as an example of how important family ties and unity are. Like Sita, Diwali serves as a reminder to value our bonds with one another and support those we love during trying times. Through the promotion of love, compassion, and community, this festival inspires us to fortify the ties that bind our families.

Importance of Self-Reflection: Diwali is a time of self-reflection and reflecting on the past year. This is an excellent opportunity to teach your kids the value of taking time to think back on their choices and actions. Reminding them to constantly want to be the greatest version of themselves and to make wise decisions is also a wonderful idea at this time. And always be open to learning from their mistakes.

In recent years, the key drivers of these negative outcomes have included the “four Cs”: covid-19, conflict, climate change, and the cost-of-living crisis. These factors have combined to inflict immense damage on the health and wellbeing of women, children, and adolescents. Systemic discrimination and an increase in extreme weather events, food insecurity, and poverty are major causes of the lack of progress in women’s, children’s, and adolescents’ health. In 2000, the climate emergency was already responsible for more than 150 000 deaths worldwide and an increasing global burden of disease, 88% of which fell on children. It is estimated that 80% of people displaced by the climate emergency are women, largely due to economic and social disparities between genders.

Such inequalities, environmental damage, and loss of human life and capital are profoundly distressing. As a result, women are negatively impacted, exacerbating the “feminisation of poverty.” Throughout the world, women continue to earn less than men, even when accounting for similar education levels. The G20 countries are home to two thirds of the global population and the actions they take collectively have global scale.

The G20 must act now to improve the health of women, children, and adolescents and tackle preventable loss of life. India currently holds the G20 presidency and is committed to achieving universal health coverage and improving healthcare service delivery globally. For example, India has proposed several initiatives for digital health solutions as part of a digital strategy launched in 2021. These digital tools enabled the registration of a billion people in order to monitor immunisation coverage, and the administration of more than 1.78 billion doses of the covid-19 vaccine. India has also proposed initiatives on the climate-health nexus, given the ongoing impacts of the climate crisis on public health, and on efforts towards better pandemic preparedness and response. It is important to ensure that these initiatives are gender and age sensitive, for instance through prioritising women-centric digital health services.

Cooperation across countries is critical for sharing good practices and addressing shared challenges. For example, effective adaptation to climate change requires both systemic approaches and, for countries to support each other’s efforts in raising financial resources and building technological capacities through South-South and North-South cooperation. G20 countries must also take more substantial action to overcome the health and wellbeing challenges faced by women, children, and adolescents.

Firstly, G20 countries must prioritise increased cross-cutting financing to strengthen health systems, enhance access to essential health services, and address the social determinants of health, such as poverty and gender inequality. Investments in physical and digital infrastructure through a gender lens could reduce the burden of unpaid work, improve wellbeing, create jobs, increase labour force participation, reduce the digital gender gap, bolster productivity, and foster economic growth.

Secondly, numerous countries are struggling to maintain pre-pandemic levels of health spending. That is affecting women’s, children’s, and adolescents’ health worldwide. Global efforts are required to help countries strengthen their health systems by attracting more development assistance for health, and finding sustainable solutions to alleviate debt burdens. The G20 must advocate for this.

Thirdly, we need robust data systems to monitor and implement policies and programmes effectively. Given that G20 countries account for approximately 85% of global GDP, two-thirds of the global population and carry significant political influence, they are well positioned to advance research and the development of new and improved health technologies and vaccines. When investing in these areas and making decisions, it is essential to meaningfully engage women, children, and adolescents.

Fourthly, investing in the early years of childhood is vitally important, including in family-friendly policies and universal social protection. Such investments can boost cognitive capital — the complete set of intellectual skills, primarily nurtured prenatally and in early childhood, that determines human capabilities — leading to inclusive economic growth. Tackling youth unemployment across the G20 requires developing adolescents’ skills, such as digital literacy, and building technology-driven and environmentally conscious growth.

The G20 must prioritise the health and wellbeing of women, children, and adolescents by making it a permanent fixture on its agenda for action. That requires dedicated, enhanced, and sustained financing, as well as more global coordination and solidarity so that no woman, child, adolescent, or country is left behind.

The health and wellbeing of women, children and adolescents are essential for sustainable economic growth worldwide. This cannot be optimised without strong G20 leadership.

On the occasion of Independence Day, parents across major cities from the states of Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana can now avail this offer and enroll their toddlers. The offer is valid for 20 days until 20th August.

EuroKids offers top-notch early education backed by extensive research and a curriculum designed for well-rounded growth through integrated programs. A recent nationwide survey revealed that most parents prefer enrolling their children at an early age, with some waiting until they turn 2 or 3 or for the new academic year to begin. The findings from the survey also underscored the significance of early education, with most parents preferring to enrol their children at an early age.

Commenting on the Independence Day special initiative, KVS Seshasai, CEO of Pre-K Division, Lighthouse Learning (EuroKids), expressed his enthusiasm about the campaign, saying, “At EuroKids, we understand the vital role of early education in shaping a child’s future. Our team of dedicated educators and child development experts has meticulously crafted a curriculum that not only imparts knowledge but also fosters creativity, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence. We are thrilled to extend this exclusive fee offer to parents, encouraging them to invest in their child’s bright future.”

The special offer is aimed at enabling more toddlers to get access to EuroKids’ high-quality early education. It will also help children build essential habits, develop social skills, and gain self-confidence – contributing significantly to their overall growth and development. In line with its longstanding commitment, EuroKids actively encourages parents to consider enrolling their children in a preschool early on, as research continues to highlight that approximately 90% of brain development occurs during the critical age group of 2 to 6 years.

EuroKids’ curriculum, EUNOIA, fosters holistic development in toddlers by aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. With a ‘Child First, Safety First’ ideology, EuroKids creates a stimulating and nurturing environment that encourages curiosity, creativity, and a love for learning. Integrating Mindful+, YogaKids, EuroFit, Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), phonics, math, and science, the curriculum offers an innovative and interactive learning approach. This approach nurtures cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development, strengthens language and numeracy skills, fosters self-regulation, and enhances concentration. Ultimately, it reinforces a child’s overall growth in physical, motor, cognitive, and socio-emotional aspects.

To avail the special fee offer and to learn more about EuroKids’ renowned early education programs, interested parents across Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana are encouraged to contact their nearest EuroKids preschool.

With plenty of spare time in hand during holidays, 85 per cent surveyed parents are worried about kids spending excessive screen time during the break.

According to a survey commissioned by Kantar for Amazon in March 2023 among over 750 parents with young kids (3 - 8 years) across 10 metro and non-metro cities of India, almost 96 per cent of parents are searching for screen-free ideas to keep their kids engaged with learning and fun activities.

The survey indicates that 82 per cent of parents are worried about keeping their kids engaged this summer. Some of the top concerns of parents include 'help kids learn while having fun (41 per cent)', 'keep pace with their curiosity to learn new things (37 per cent)', and 'manage boredom amongst kids in creative ways (30 per cent)'.

More than 90 per cent of parents surveyed believe kids become less active when spending more time on screen devices. Majority felt that ideal screen time should be less than 2 hours however, 69 per cent confirmed that their kids are spending more than 3 hours with screens every day.

"Kids are curious to learn new things and want to have fun in the process. With more free time at hand during summer vacations, parents have a big task ahead of themselves to keep their kids engaged", says Deepender Rana, Executive Managing Director, Insights Division, Kantar. "Our survey indicates that parents are keen to limit screen time of kids with screen-free activities that can help them learn new skills and have fun at the same time."

To help kids make the most of their summer vacation, parents want them to pick up skills such as English speaking (50 per cent); good morals and social manners (45 per cent); performing arts like dancing, singing, and playing musical instruments (36 per cent); arts and crafts (32 per cent); and physical and outdoor activities (32 per cent).

Vaccination for infants: Do's and Don'ts

New Delhi, March 29 (IANSlife) Vaccinations are necessary for all age groups, but newborns and small children require them the most. Their small and delicate bodies leave them susceptible to a variety of infections including rotavirus, hepatitis, and polio. Vaccinations given to children at a young age improve their immunity to certain infections.

Nonetheless, the immunisation procedure can be difficult since newborns can be easily scared, and new parents may be concerned about how the process will proceed or about potential side effects.

Do's for vaccinating your baby

Bring your baby's health records: Scheduling an appointment in advance gives you sufficient time to gather all the necessary information about the vaccinations, including any potential side effects and the recommended schedule.

Make sure to have your baby's vaccination history handy. These records allow your doctor to assess whether your baby is ready to receive a vaccine and has built the immunity to handle any potential side effects.

It is important to note that some babies may require additional shots based on their individual health records, so share these records with your doctor before your baby receives any vaccinations.

Dress your baby comfortably: Dress your baby in loose-fitting clothes to allow their body to move freely without restriction during vaccination to make the process smoother and more manageable.

When your baby is comfortable, they are less likely to become fussy or agitated. Loose clothing can also prevent the injection area from rubbing against the fabric, preventing discomfort or rashes.

Ask questions: If you have any questions regarding the procedure, precaution, or reason for a vaccine, ask the doctor without hesitating. This enhances your knowledge and prepares you to handle the side effects, if any, in the best way. Some common questions that you might want to enquire about include the following:

What kind of food should I feed the baby after the shot?

When should I get the next dose for the baby?

Is my baby healthy?

Do we need to administer some medicine for the side effects?

What are the side effects of this particular dose?

Don'ts for vaccinating your baby

Don't get them vaccinated by unlicensed doctors: Unlicensed physicians may not have undergone the rigorous accreditation and training necessary to safely administer vaccines. Consequently, they may make errors that could harm your baby.

By taking the time to carefully research and select a qualified and licensed healthcare provider to administer your baby's vaccinations, you can help safeguard their health and minimise the risk of complications.

Don't skip a vaccination: Skipping a necessary vaccination for your baby can lead to significant health risks and may result in multiple doctor visits in the future. It is recommended that you consult with your doctor to understand the reasons why a particular vaccine is necessary and how it can benefit your child.

If you still feel hesitant or unsure, taking a second opinion is always advisable. Remember that vaccinations are to protect your baby against fatal diseases, which should not be left to biases.

Don't give any medication before the shot without consultation: Certain medications may impact the efficacy of a vaccine. Check with your doctor before administering any medication to your baby before their scheduled vaccination.

Don't hesitate to report any adverse reactions: If you notice any unusual symptoms in your baby following vaccination, consult your doctor immediately. It is essential to avoid attempting home remedies, as they may not effectively address the problem.

As new parents, it is natural to feel anxious when your baby exhibits unusual symptoms, but it is vital to seek medical care to soothe and comfort your baby over anything else.

Don't compare your baby's reactions to other babies: Each baby's body is unique, and their reaction to vaccines may vary. Therefore, it is advisable not to compare your baby's response to that of other babies, as this may lead to unnecessary stress and anxiety.

Instead, focus on providing individualised care and consulting with your doctor at every step. This will help you ensure that your baby receives the best possible care and protection against potential health risks.
