New Delhi: Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed deep sorrow over the death of several Indian pilgrims in a bus accident near Medina in Saudi Arabia. The victims were part of a group travelling for Umrah, as per agency report.

The bus, carrying nearly 40 Indian nationals, many of them from Telangana, reportedly collided with an oil tanker around 1:30 am (Indian time). Television visuals showed the vehicle engulfed in flames, with thick smoke rising into the air.

Vice President Radhakrishnan said he was deeply saddened by the road accident near Medina and extended his condolences to the affected families. He expressed heartfelt sympathy towards the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.

Prime Minister Modi also conveyed grief in a post on X, stating that he was extremely pained by the tragedy involving Indian citizens in Medina. He expressed solidarity with the families who had lost their loved ones and wished a quick recovery for all those injured.

The Prime Minister said the Indian Embassy in Riyadh and the Consulate in Jeddah were providing all possible assistance and remained in close touch with Saudi authorities.

Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju described himself as shocked and deeply saddened by the news of the deaths of several Indian pilgrims in the accident on the Medina–Mecca highway. He also extended his condolences to the grieving families.

New Delhi, November 10 – Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has signed a bilateral Haj agreement in Jeddah confirming India’s Haj quota for 2026 at 1,75,025 pilgrims.

As per agency report, Rijiju, who was on an official visit to Saudi Arabia from November 7 to 9, held a bilateral meeting with Saudi Minister of Haj and Umrah, Dr. Tawfiq bin Fawzan Al-Rabiah, in Jeddah on Sunday. During the meeting, both ministers reviewed the ongoing preparations for Haj, discussed ways to enhance coordination and logistical support, and reaffirmed their shared commitment to streamline the pilgrimage process for Indian Haj pilgrims.

The meeting focused on improving facilities, transportation, accommodation, and healthcare services to ensure a smooth and comfortable experience for all pilgrims. Following the discussions, both sides signed the bilateral Haj agreement for 2026, confirming India’s national quota of 1,75,025 pilgrims.

Rijiju also chaired an internal review meeting with officials from the Indian Embassy in Riyadh and the Consulate General in Jeddah to assess the progress of Haj 2026 preparations. He appreciated the efforts made by the mission and consular teams in close coordination with Saudi authorities to ensure the welfare and comfort of Indian pilgrims.

During his visit, the Union Minister inspected key Haj and Umrah-related facilities, including Terminal 1 and the Haramain Station in Jeddah, and reviewed the available infrastructure for pilgrims. He also interacted with members of the Indian diaspora in Jeddah and Taif.

In a social media post, Rijiju described the signing of the agreement as an important step in strengthening India–Saudi Arabia relations. New Delhi, October 7: The Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) between India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has officially come into effect from August 31, 2024, providing continuous investment protection to investors from both nations.

The Ministry of Finance released a statement on Monday announcing the implementation of the BIT between India and the UAE. The treaty, which was signed in Abu Dhabi on February 13, 2024, became effective on August 31, 2024. The ministry highlighted that this agreement ensures ongoing investment protection for investors from both countries.

The earlier Bilateral Investment Protection and Promotion Agreement (BIPPA), signed between India and the UAE in December 2013, concluded on September 12, 2024. The Ministry of Finance expressed optimism that the new BIT would enhance trust and ease among investors, paving the way for increased bilateral investment, benefiting businesses and the economies of both nations.

Notably, the UAE ranks as the seventh-largest contributor to India's total Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), accounting for a 3% share, with cumulative investments amounting to approximately USD 19 billion from April 2000 to June 2024. Meanwhile, India has invested around 5% of its total FDI in the UAE, amounting to USD 15.26 billion, during the same period. Additionally, the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two countries came into force on May 1, 2021.

Riyadh, 24 June (HS): Saudi Arabia officials said that extreme heat in Saudi Arabia has taken a toll of at least 1,301 pilgrims during the Haj. The heat wave has affected the health services adversely. The deceased include 98 Indians. The majority of those who died were from Egypt. The temperature in Mecca was recorded at 51.66 degrees Celsius on last Monday.

According to Saudi Arabia Health Minister Fahad bin-Abdurraheman Al-Jalajel, 83 per cent of the pilgrims who died had used unlawful methods for the pilgrimage. They were traveling long distances in high temperatures without any rest. The deceased include the aged and sick people. Identifying them posed problems as they lacked valid documents in their possession. Now all the deceased have been identified, he added.

The health minister said 95 Haj pilgrims are being treated in hospitals, some in Riyadh. The deceased were buried in Mecca.

Saudi Arabia had allowed about 18 lakh (1.8 million) for the Haj. Hundreds of others joined the pilgrimage without permission, which affected the facilities created by the government. The illegal entrants had to sleep in the open sky and could not avail of the official transport facilities.

Indian Foreign Affairs Ministry said that 1.75 lakh people reached Saudi Arabia every year for the Haj. The ministry confirmed the death of 98. Last year, 187 pilgrims died during Haj.

He further stated the future belonged to Man Made Fibre Textiles (MMF).

Shri Goyal informed while speaking on FTA (Free Trade Agreement) with  Japan, Australia, UAE, S. Korea etc. that the utilisation of FTA benefits are very poor in India is a matter of concern.

Shri Piyush Goyal announced that BIS will spend Rs. 40 crore to set up 21 testing laboratories at various places in India.

Shri Bhadresh Dodhia, Chairman – SRTEPC stated that man- made fibre textiles export in 2022-23 touched US$ 5.8 Billion as against US$ 6.8 Billion in 2021-22, registering a negative growth of  (-) 15.3%. Export of technical textiles touched US$ 2.5 Billion in 2022-23 as compared to US$ 2.8 Billion 2021-22, registering a negative growth of (-) 11.9%.

Export of man -made fibre textiles during April to October 2023 have touched US$ 3.1 Billion as compared to US$ 3.4 Billion during the same period last year, registering a negative growth of 9.4%. Likewise export of technical textiles touched US$ 1.51 Billion during April to October 2023 as compared to US$ 1.5 Billion during the same period last year, registering a positive growth of 0.5%.

Shri Bhadresh Dodhia further stated that ‘we are confident that export of man- made fibre textiles will cross US$ 6 Billion in 2023 – 24 and export of technical textile will cross above US$ 3 Billion’.

SRTEPC will make its best efforts to increase the export of man- made fibre textiles to US$ 11 Billion and export of technical textiles to US $ 10 Billion by 2030, as per the targets given by the government.

Manmade fibre textiles sector is facing the problem of inverted duty structure under GST. There is 18% GST on fibres, 12% on yarns and 5% on fabrics. This is leading to accumulated input tax credits with the manufacturers, which id adding to their cost. SRTEPC requests to cover the entire value chain of MMF Textiles products under same rate of GST.

Shri Dodhia requested government to cover the entire value chain of textiles & clothing under the Interest Equalization Scheme.

SRTEPC distributed 55 Export Awards for the Year 2022-23. Reliance Industries received 6 awards in various categories. Dubai, Aug 2 (IANS) A Dubai-based Indian man has won a grand prize of AED20 million in the United Arab Emirates' (UAE) leading weekly draw, Mahzooz.

Originally from Mumbai, Sachin, a 47-year-old CAD technician working at a private company, has been residing in Dubai for 25 years.

He was named the winner of the139th draw held on July 29.

On the day the prize was announced, Sachin had brought home the newest addition to his family, a kitten.

Sachin humorously attributeed his win to the good luck brought by the feline.

The devoted family man lives with his wife and three children.

Overwhelmed with excitement, he shared his astonishment when he discovered he was the lucky winner on a Sunday morning after checking his Mahzooz account.

Speechless and in shock, Sachin immediately informed his wife, who was just as surprised.

"I have been participating in Mahzooz every week, hoping for a big win one day. This victory is a life-changer for my family and me. Not sure what role my kitten has played in this win, but I know it brought me luck," said Sachin.
