Surat's Dream City Metro Rail Project Phase-1 is making significant progress with the completion of its second tunnel. This tunnel, constructed by Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Narmada, stretches from Labheshwar Chowk to the Central Warehouse on Varachha Road.

TBM Narmada's Impressive Efficiency

The successful completion of this 600-meter tunnel marks TBM Narmada's third achievement within the 3.46 km package on the Sarthana-Dream City line. Notably, the machine had previously completed a 1.5 km tunnel from Kapodra to Labheshwar Chowk in just one year (December 2022 - December 2023).

Underground Route for Diamond Line

This latest tunnel construction is part of the Diamond Line, which will see the metro rail running entirely underground between Kapodra and Chowkbazar. In contrast, other sections of the Sarthana-Dream City line (total length 22.77 km) will utilize elevated tracks. An entirely separate textile line, running from Antroli to Bhensan, will also be constructed entirely above ground.

Contractors Geared Up for Project Completion

Gulemark and Sam India contractors are responsible for building a total of six tunnels and three stations along the Sarthana-Dream City line. The project's swift progress bodes well for its timely completion.

The Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro project is nearing completion, with trial runs expected to begin soon on a critical stretch. The Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) is working diligently to launch a pre-trial run from Motera Stadium to Gandhinagar Sector 1 in March-April.

However, with Lok Sabha elections looming, time is of the essence. The GMRC emphasizes the importance of starting trials by mid-March, before the model code of conduct kicks in. "Once the election dates are announced, testing gets restricted," explained an official, highlighting the urgency.

The good news doesn't stop there. After the elections, passenger services will kick off, initially reaching Gandhinagar Sector-1. By year-end, the entire stretch will be open for public use.

Adding to the excitement is the nearing completion of a visually stunning cable-stayed bridge over the Narmada Main Canal, connecting Narendra Modi Stadium to Gandhinagar. This architectural marvel boasts a central span of 145 meters, promising a smooth and scenic journey.

Furthermore, work on other parts of the project is progressing swiftly. The stretch from Thaltej to Thaltej village is also targeted for completion by year-end, along with the opening of the Sabarmati Metro station after the elections.

SURAT – In an ambitious urban development move ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Surat Metro Rail Project, a plan endorsed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is on track to begin operations. The metro route from Sarthana to Dream City is slated to become operational before the year ends, giving the city of Surat an added layer to its identity.

Amidst bustling construction activity, the Surat metro expansion is progressing at an accelerated pace. The city will soon see the construction of two corridors to facilitate both underground and elevated metro trains. According to the timeline, the elevated line connecting Dream City to Sarthana, and from Dream City to Kadarshah Nal Chowkbazar, is expected to be operational by December 2023. The completion of the entire Pura Route is anticipated by December 2024, with the goal of wrapping up both Sarthana to Dream City and Bhensan to Saroli corridors by March 2025.

Yogendra Singh Chauhan, a senior Metro engineer, shared insights into the underground tunnel development, a vital component of the project. With the assistance of tunnel boring machines (TBMs) provided by GMRC, the first TBM was launched in September by the Gulmark agency to construct the 1.2 km tunnel from Kapodra to Labheshwar Chowk. A second TBM has been employed to create an adjacent track. While both corridors are set to be functional by March 2025, the Sarthana to Dream City line will be up and running by December 2023.

The Metro Rail Project, advancing at a rapid speed, is poised to reshape the urban face of Surat city. A significant portion of this includes an underground metro route, construction for which is nearing completion. Meanwhile, the Bhensan to Saroli route, rich in cloth markets and referred to as the Textile Corridor, will commence in the second phase. This phase includes an 18.84 km corridor that will integrate the areas of Udhna Darwaza, Kamela Darwaza, Anjana Farm, Model Town, and Magob.

Surat - The ambitious Surat Metro Rail project is advancing rapidly, with plans for elevated and underground stations spanning a total of 42 km in the city. In the first phase, a 6.47 km underground route is being constructed with the help of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) operated by GMRC.

Gulmark Agency initiated the use of a TBM machine in September to build a tunnel from Kapodra to Labeshwar Chowk (1.2 km), with another TBM machine deployed for an adjacent track. Gulmark Company is responsible for constructing the tunnel from Kapodra to Surat Railway Station, with the section from Kapodra to Labheshwar Chowk being completed in the first phase. Both TBMs are now operational at the site.

J. Kumar Infra has recently installed a TBM machine in Chowkbazar, and unloading of tunnel boring machine parts for the underground tunnel has begun. Excavation of the tunnel is expected to start in May following the assembly of TBM parts.

Initially slated for an April start, the construction of rings using the TBM machine is likely to begin three days earlier, with tunneling work commencing by May. Although the cutting speed of the TBM is initially slow, the machine is 

designed to work more efficiently and quickly over time. J. Kumar Infra will construct the tunnel to accommodate three underground metro stations: Chowkbazar, Maskati, and Surat railway station.

The TBM machine will start with a slow cutting speed, but work will gradually become faster. J.Kumar will construct tunnels for three underground metro stations, namely Chowkbazar, Maskati, and Surat railway stations.
