The family's decision not only saved several patients but also presented an inspiring example of humanity to society.

Hardik, originally from Limbdi in Surendranagar district and currently residing in the Althan area of Surat, suffered a severe head injury in an accident involving a BRTS bus near Daksheshwar Mahadev Temple while returning home from Pandesara on March 25. He was immediately taken to New Civil Hospital by an ambulance and later admitted to Maitreya Multi Super Specialty Hospital for further treatment.

A CT scan revealed that he had a brain hemorrhage and a blood clot in the brain. Neurosurgeons Dr. Jenil Gurnani and Dr. Mehul Modi performed a craniotomy to remove the blood clot. On March 31, Dr. Jenil Gurnani, physician Dr. Priyank Shah, intensivist Dr. Mit Nayak, and medical administrator and CEO Dr. Pranav Thakar declared Hardik brain dead.

Dr. Priyank Shah contacted Nilesh Mandalewala, the founder of Donate Life, to inform him about Hardik's brain death. The Donate Life team arrived at the hospital and explained the importance of organ donation and the entire process to Hardik's wife Priya, father Bharatbhai, mother Aashaben, brother Mayankbhai, brother-in-law Kalpeshbhai, Vaibhavbhai, sister-in-law Vatsalbhai, father-in-law Nileshbhai, uncle Ketanbhai, cousin Pareshbhai, and other family members.

Priya and Bharatbhai expressed their wish for all of Hardik's organs to be donated to give new life to patients suffering from organ failure, as his organs would otherwise turn to ashes. Hardik's family includes his wife Priya, aged 30, a housewife; daughter Tivisha, aged 7, who is in second grade at Nanduba English Academy; and son Saransh, aged 2. His father Bharatbhai, aged 70, is retired, while his mother Aashaben, aged 67, runs a beauty parlor.

After receiving approval for organ donation from the family, SOTTO was contacted. SOTTO will handle the heart and liver donation to Kiran Hospital in Surat, and both kidneys will be transplanted after receiving the HLA report.

The donated heart was transplanted into a 30-year-old man in Mumbai by Dr. Nandkishor Kapadia, Dr. Vishal Agarwal, Dr. Vikesh Revdiwala, and their team, while the liver transplant was performed on a 50-year-old man in Nashik by Dr. Dharmesh Dhanani, Dr. Gaurav Gupta, Dr. Ruchit Zaveri, and their team at Kiran Hospital in Surat. After the donation of both kidneys by SOTTO, they will be transplanted into two needy patients. The donation of eyes was accepted by Dr. Praful Shiroya from Lok Drishti Eye Bank. Notably, the first heart transplant was conducted at Kiran Hospital.

This marks the 58th heart donation through Donate Life. Surat has established a significant presence in the field of organ donation at both national and international levels. Hearts, lungs, hands, and small intestines donated from Surat have already been transplanted in various cities across the country, including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Indore, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Kolkata. Additionally, Surat has made its mark internationally in the field of organ donation.

Hearts, lungs, and small intestines transplanted in hospitals in Mumbai and Chennai have been donated to citizens from Ukraine, UAE, Russia, Bangladesh, and Sudan. Known as the textile and diamond city, Surat is now gaining recognition as an organ donor city in the country.

The Donate Life organization pays tribute to the family of the late Hardik Bharatbhai Khudkhudiya, who generously donated his precious organs in this great humanitarian effort. We express our gratitude to his family for their service.

Through Donate Life, a total of 1381 organs and tissues have been donated, establishing Surat's national and international identity in organ donation. The entire process of organ donation in Surat was successfully completed under the guidance of Nilesh Mandalewala, founder and president of Donate Life. Family members of the late Hardik, including wife Priya, father Bharatbhai, mother Aashaben, and brother Mayankbhai, played a crucial role in this humanitarian initiative.

The medical team and hospital staff also contributed significantly to this process. Neurosurgeon Dr. Jenil Gurnani, physician Dr. Priyank Shah, intensivist Dr. Mit Nayak, CEO Dr. Pranav Thakar, RMO Dr. Bhavin Patel, Dr. Hemali Shah, registrar Dr. Nancy Patel, nursing staff, and Maitreya Hospital administration, along with program officials and other associates from Donate Life, ensured that the entire process was carried out smoothly.

A total of 1381 organs and tissues have been donated through Donate Life so far, including 554 kidneys, 242 livers, 58 hearts, 56 lungs, 9 pancreases, 11 hands, 1 small intestine, and 450 eyes. This significant contribution has provided new life and vision to a total of 1273 individuals both domestically and internationally. The city of Surat is rapidly becoming a leader in the field of organ donation, and this initiative is strengthening awareness and the spirit of humanity in society.

In a recent heart-wrenching incident, the family of Kusumben Bharatbhai Patel from Dinod village in Mangrol Taluka chose to donate her organs after she was declared brain dead, providing a new lease of life to four individuals.

Nilesh Mandalewala, the founder of Donate Life, shared the details of the case. On May 20, 2025, Kusumben’s son Pavan Bharatbhai Patel was married. Just two days later, on May 22, the family embarked on a pilgrimage to Ajmer with the newlywed couple. Tragically, on the morning of May 23, their car met with an accident near the Rithabhadev Kalaji temple in Udaipur. Pavan and Kusumben’s daughter Nayanaben lost their lives on the spot, while Kusumben suffered critical head injuries and was admitted to RNT Medical College, Udaipur.

Despite the immense grief, the family made a courageous and compassionate decision to donate Kusumben’s organs after doctors declared her brain dead. The organ donation process was carried out with the support of the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO) and Donate Life.

Kusumben’s kidneys and liver were allocated to Kiran Hospital in Surat. One kidney was transplanted into a 32-year-old male patient, and the other into a 33-year-old female patient. Her liver was successfully transplanted into a 68-year-old man from Mumbai. Additionally, Kusumben’s eyes were donated for corneal transplantation to a patient in Surat.

The transplant surgeries at Kiran Hospital were performed by a team of doctors including Dr. Kalpesh Gohil, Dr. Mukesh Ahir, Dr. Pramod Patel, Dr. Dharmesh Dhanani, Dr. Ruchir Jhaveri, Dr. Gaurav Gupta, and Dr. Sankit Shah.

Kusumben’s husband Bharatbhai, her brother Harshadbhai, and son-in-law Amol Rajput, along with other members of the Patel family, played a vital role in supporting this noble act. The entire process was guided by Nilesh Mandalewala and involved the active participation of medical professionals and volunteers.

Donate Life paid heartfelt tribute to Kusumben Bharatbhai Patel and expressed deep gratitude to her family for their extraordinary act of humanity. Their selfless decision has brought hope and healing to multiple families, exemplifying Surat’s growing legacy as a compassionate organ donor city.

In a deeply moving gesture, the family of Namrata Bhavin Panchal, a primary school teacher from Vapi, chose to donate her organs after she was declared brain dead, giving new life to five individuals in critical need.

Namrata Panchal, 44, a resident of Krishna Krupa Residency on Charwada Road in Vapi, was rushed to Hariya Hospital on April 25 after experiencing intense headache and vomiting. Though she was initially treated and discharged, her condition worsened again. A neurologist later confirmed that a blood vessel in her brain had ruptured. She was shifted to Maitriya Multi Super Specialty Hospital in Surat, where she underwent brain surgery on April 26. Despite all efforts, she was declared brain dead on May 8.

Following consultations with the NGO Donate Life, Namrata’s husband Bhavinbhai Panchal and her family agreed to proceed with organ donation. Bhavinbhai, an assistant manager at a pharmaceutical company in Vapi, said they were inspired by posters in the hospital promoting organ donation and saw it as a sacred act. “If someone can live through my wife’s organs, there's no greater virtue than that,” he shared.

Under the guidance of Donate Life founder Nilesh Mandlewala, Namrata’s liver, kidneys, and corneas were successfully harvested. Initially, the liver and one kidney were to be sent to Apollo Hospital in Ahmedabad, but due to technical issues, the liver was later redirected to Zydus Hospital. Based on HLA reports, both kidneys were transplanted into two needy patients, while her corneas were accepted by Dr. Praful Shiroya of Lok Drashti Eye Bank.

One of the organ recipients was a 53-year-old man from Odisha, who received a lifesaving liver transplant. To ensure timely delivery of the organs, Surat Police arranged a Green Corridor to Ahmedabad—marking the 134th such corridor between Surat and Ahmedabad.

Namrata Panchal’s selfless act not only saved lives but also exemplified the enduring legacy of a teacher whose role in society continues even after death. Her story stands as a beacon of compassion and responsibility, inspiring society to embrace the life-changing potential of organ donation.

With the support of the Donate Life organization, the organs of 45-year-old Kiranbhai Moreshwarbhai Patil from the Hindu Maratha Patil community were donated, offering a second chance at life to four individuals.

Originally from Khedi village in Amalner taluka of Jalgaon district, Maharashtra, Kiranbhai was residing in Someshwar Nagar-1 on Jiyav Budia Road in Surat’s Bhestan area with his family. He worked as a dyeing master at a textile mill in Sachin. On April 13, Kiranbhai suddenly collapsed during lunch and was immediately rushed to Vibrant Hospital by his family. After initial treatment, he was referred to Kiran Hospital under the care of neurologist Dr. Bhaumik Thakor. A CT scan revealed a brain hemorrhage.

On April 14, Dr. Thakor and his team declared him brain-dead. The family was then approached by Donate Life founder Nilesh Mandalewala, who explained the process and significance of organ donation. After a deeply emotional yet courageous decision, the family agreed to donate his organs.

Kiranbhai’s wife, Shraddha Patil, expressed the family's resolve, stating that if the body is ultimately to turn to ashes, it should first serve a greater purpose by saving lives. Following the family's consent, organ allocation was coordinated through the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO).

Both kidneys were successfully transplanted at Kiran Hospital in Surat, benefiting a 42-year-old woman and a 35-year-old man. Additionally, corneal transplants performed by Dr. Sankit Shah restored vision to two individuals.

Kiranbhai is survived by his wife Shraddha (39), elder daughter Nidhi (20), younger daughter Diya (17), and son Rishi (16). The family's act of compassion and social responsibility stands as a powerful example for others.

According to Donate Life, the organization has facilitated 1,319 organ and tissue donations so far. These include 536 kidneys, 232 livers, 56 hearts, 52 lungs, 9 pancreases, 8 hands, 1 small intestine, and 425 eyes, benefiting a total of 1,215 individuals across India and abroad.

The award was presented by former Rajya Sabha MP and economist Narendra Jadhav in recognition of Mandalewala's relentless efforts spanning over two decades in promoting organ donation.

Mandalewala’s journey began in 2005, following a personal crisis when his father suffered from kidney disease. At the time, organ donation was surrounded by widespread fear, misinformation, and religious misconceptions. Determined to change this, he launched a public awareness campaign that has since transformed the narrative around organ donation, especially in Gujarat.

Under his leadership, Donate Life has emerged as a pioneering organization, conducting awareness drives 24x7x365 through street plays, walkathons, seminars, and creative initiatives at schools, colleges, cremation grounds, and traffic junctions. These initiatives aim to educate the public and normalize conversations around organ donation.

So far, the organization has facilitated the donation of 1,315 organs and tissues from Surat and South Gujarat, providing a new lease on life to over 1,211 individuals across India and countries such as the UAE, Ukraine, Russia, Sudan, and Bangladesh.

Starting in 2006 with kidney donations in Surat, the initiative has now expanded to include donations of liver, pancreas, heart, lungs, bones, intestines, and even hands.

Nilesh Mandalewala has received numerous accolades at the state, national, and international levels. Among the most notable is the "Gujarat Garima" award, the highest civilian honor bestowed by the Government of Gujarat.

His recognition with the "Drivers of Change" award is not just a personal milestone but a proud moment for Surat and the entire country. It reflects a broader movement of social change, inspiring others to look beyond myths and embrace the life-saving potential of organ donation.

The organ donation was facilitated by Donate Life, an organization known for its extensive work in the field of organ and tissue donation.

As per agency report, Chamkalal, originally from Bhagalpur district in Bihar and a resident of Mora Tekra, Hazira, worked at Unnati Engineering Pvt. Ltd. On March 28, while on duty at L&T’s Defence Gate, he suddenly collapsed due to dizziness. He began experiencing severe headaches and vomiting soon after and was rushed to Ashutosh Multispeciality Hospital via a 108 emergency ambulance.

A CT scan revealed a brain hemorrhage caused by a balloon-like bulge in the small brain’s blood vessels. Despite medical efforts, Chamkalal was declared brain dead on March 31 by the hospital’s intensive care and neurosurgery teams. Dr. Ruchita Manvani, Medical Officer at the hospital, informed Donate Life’s Nilesh Mandalewala about the situation. Their team reached the hospital and explained the process and importance of organ donation to Chamkalal’s wife, Lalita Devi, and other family members.

Moved by the opportunity to help others, the family agreed to the donation. Chamkalal is survived by his wife and three sons—17-year-old Nitish Kumar Yadav, a first-year Arts student at NB College in Bhagalpur; 15-year-old Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, a 12th-grade student; and 13-year-old Jaikant, who is in high school.

After receiving consent, SOTTO allocated Chamkalal’s heart to U.N. Mehta Hospital in Ahmedabad, while his liver and kidneys were assigned to IKDRC, Ahmedabad. To ensure timely delivery, Surat City Police facilitated two green corridors—one by air for the heart and another by road for the liver and kidneys.

Notably, this was the 56th heart donation coordinated by Donate Life, which has now arranged a total of 1,315 organ and tissue donations. These include 534 kidneys, 232 livers, 56 hearts, 52 lungs, 9 pancreases, 8 hands, 1 small intestine, and 423 eye donations, benefiting 1,211 recipients across India and abroad.

In accordance with his wife's wishes, Chamkalal’s body was sent to their native village in Bihar—Babhngama, Post Kaliganj, Police Station Shivnarayanpur, District Bhagalpur—so that the children could see their father one last time. Donate Life covered all arrangements for the body’s transport from Surat Airport to Patna by cargo flight, and from Patna to their village by road, free of charge. The organization also pledged to take full responsibility for the education of Chamkalal’s three children.

The assistance of Dr. Vinesh Shah in the embalming process was acknowledged as commendable. Chamkalal’s selfless donation underscores Surat’s growing prominence in the field of organ donation, with Donate Life continuing to play a pivotal role in saving lives and restoring vision across borders.

In Surat, 49-year-old Anjuban Rajeshbhai Narola was declared brain dead, prompting her family to make a heart-wrenching yet inspiring decision. They chose to donate her hands, kidneys, liver, and eyes, offering a new lease on life to six individuals, including a 35-year-old man from Dahod who underwent a rare double hand transplant.

As per reports, Nileshbhai Mandalewala, the founder of the Donate Life organization, highlighted how Anjuban’s donation serves as an inspiration, especially on International Women’s Day. Though she is no longer alive, her organs continue to sustain six people, keeping her legacy alive.

Anjuban collapsed unexpectedly on the morning of March 4 while attending to her daily household chores. She was immediately rushed to Kiran Hospital, where doctors diagnosed her with severe brain hemorrhage. On March 6, she was declared brain dead. Her family, including her husband and son, then made the noble decision to donate her organs, believing that rather than allowing her body to turn to ashes, her energy could illuminate others’ lives.

One of the most remarkable beneficiaries of Anjuban’s donation was a 35-year-old line worker from Vadodara MGVCL. In July 2022, he suffered a severe electric shock while working on a power pole, leading to the amputation of both his hands. With a wife, three daughters, and a son, his life had become increasingly challenging. However, thanks to Anjuban’s donated hands, he has been given a second chance at life. A team led by Dr. Arvind Patel at Kiran Hospital successfully performed Gujarat’s first-ever double hand transplant.

This is the second instance in just six days where the Donate Life organization has facilitated a hand transplant, marking another milestone in organ donation history.

The impact of Anjuban’s donation extended to multiple recipients. One of her kidneys was transplanted into a 29-year-old woman in Surat, while the other went to a 60-year-old man. Her liver was donated to a 38-year-old male patient in Surat, and her eyes will be used to restore vision in two individuals.

Donate Life has played a crucial role in organ donation across Surat, facilitating the donation of 528 kidneys, 229 livers, 55 hearts, 52 lungs, 9 pancreases, 8 hands, and 419 corneas to date. These contributions have provided hope and life to countless patients across India and beyond.

Surat, known as the textile and diamond hub of India, is now earning recognition as an "Organ Donor City." Thanks to the relentless efforts of Donate Life and the generosity of Surat’s citizens, a total of 1,301 organs and tissues have been donated over the years, saving or improving the lives of 1,197 individuals.

His family, deeply moved by his commitment to humanitarian causes, made a remarkable decision to donate his body for medical education in India. This selfless act marks the first instance in the country's history of an Indian citizen living abroad donating their body for such a purpose.

The decision to donate Prajesh's body was made by his father, Prakashbhai Patel, who is a trustee of the Donate Life organization. Prajesh himself was actively involved in promoting organ donation awareness. His untimely demise, resulting from complications related to diarrhea and vomiting, occurred shortly after his admission to a hospital in Canada.

The process of bringing Prajesh's body to India involved significant logistical efforts, with assistance from Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and Anand MP Miteshbhai Patel. His body was flown from Toronto to Delhi and then transported by ambulance to Od village, creating a somber and emotional atmosphere upon its arrival.

Prajesh's family includes his wife Sejal, who is a teacher, and their two children, Vihaan and Mihika, residing in Canada. His parents, Prakashbhai and Aartiben, live in Mumbai, along with his two married sisters who reside in America. Prajesh's donation was facilitated by Nilesh Mandlewala, founder of Donate Life, showcasing the power of altruism and leaving behind an inspirational legacy.

More than 5 lakh people in India lose their lives each year due to organ shortage. But amidst the festive spirit of the kite festival, Donate Life, a leading organ donation organization in Gujarat, organized a powerful event to raise awareness and celebrate the selfless act of giving life.

"Organ Donor Family One, Together We Give Life" brought together families who have donated organs of their loved ones, extending hope and second chances to countless patients. Through poignant displays, message-bearing kites, and personal testimonies, the event resonated with the attendees, many of whom took the pledge to become organ donors themselves.

"With every organ donated, a hundred stories bloom. We are here to express our gratitude to these families who have chosen to light the lamp of life even in the darkness of their own grief," shared Nileshbhai Mandlewala of Donate Life.

The event witnessed the presence of dignitaries like Chief Commissioner of GST Pankaj Singh, Mayor Dakshesh Mavani, MLA Arvindbhai Rana, and prominent figures from social, political, academic, and industrial spheres. Their support echoed the importance of organ donation as a critical pillar of our community.

But the true heroes of the day were the donor families, their resilience and compassion inspiring a wave of pledges from 167 individuals who committed to giving life after death. Each pledge held the promise of a brighter future, a future where the gift of organs becomes a common thread woven into the fabric of our society.

Donate Life's tireless efforts, for 365 days a year for the past 18 years, are paving the way for a more life-giving tomorrow. This event, with its vibrant kites and powerful message, served as a testament to their dedication and the unwavering spirit of hope that fuels their mission.

As the kites danced in the sky, their colorful tails carried a message far beyond the joyous festivity: a message of life, of hope, and of a future where organ donation becomes a symbol of our shared humanity.

In a recent incident, a 58-year-old financier's family has given the ultimate gift of life to five people by donating his organs after he was declared brain-dead. The organs were transported through a Green Corridor created by the Surat City Police to ensure timely delivery.

The Tragic Loss and Noble Decision

Hasmukhbhai Manilal Sanghvi, a resident originally from Mehsana and associated with Toral Apartment Finance business at Nanpura, Surat, collapsed on the night of 15th August, suffering from a headache and vomiting. Subsequent tests revealed brain hemorrhage, leading to his declaration as brain-dead on 16th August.

The Donate Life team reached out to Hasmukhbhai's family, explaining the importance and process of organ donation. His daughter, Ayushi, along with other family members, agreed to donate his organs. Ayushi noted that since her father's death was inevitable, they decided to give life to others by donating his organs.

The Organ Transplantation Process

With the family's consent, Hasmukhbhai's liver was allocated to KD Hospital in Ahmedabad. Additionally, his two kidneys will be transplanted into needy patients at a hospital in Ahmedabad. His eyes were accepted by Lok Drishti Eye Bank.

The liver was successfully transplanted at KD Hospital in Ahmedabad into a 30-year-old resident of Indore.

Green Corridor: A Lifeline for the Needy

The Surat City Police played a crucial role by creating a Green Corridor from Mahaveer Hospital to Surat Airport, ensuring the rapid airlift of the liver and kidneys to Ahmedabad. Impressively, 104 Green Corridors have been created so far by the Surat City Police to transport vital organs across the country.

A City with a Heart

The family of the late Dayanand Shivji Verma, a 42-year-old security guard who suffered a fatal brain haemorrhage, have given six people a chance at a new life by donating his heart, liver, kidneys, and eyes.

The life-saving heart was promptly transported to Mumbai, covering a 298 km distance in just 85 minutes, where it was successfully transplanted.

Dayanand, hailing from Bharuch, was working at the GSFC Fiber Unit colony when he collapsed in his bathroom on the morning of June 12. After being initially treated at the Apex Hospital in Kosamba, Dayanand was transferred to Surat's Maitreya Multi Superspeciality Hospital. Tragically, the medical team declared him brain dead on June 14.

Informed about Dayanand's condition, the team from Donate Life, a local non-profit organisation promoting organ donation, reached out to the bereaved family. After understanding the profound impact of organ donation, Dayanand's wife Shantidevi and their son Ravikumar consented to donate his organs. Despite their own pain, they embraced the opportunity to help others and affirm the sanctity of life.

Dayanand's heart was airlifted to Mumbai where it was transplanted into a 65-year-old man from Borivali. Meanwhile, his liver was gifted to a 55-year-old man from Khambhat and transplanted at Zydus Hospital, Ahmedabad. His kidneys found new homes in two other patients at a hospital in Ahmedabad.

In a coordinated response to this vital mission, the Surat City Police created a 'Green Corridor' from Maitreya Multi Superspeciality Hospital to Surat Airport, facilitating the swift transport of the life-saving organs. Remarkably, the Surat city police have thus far established 99 such Green Corridors, enabling the timely transportation of crucial organs to various cities across India.

This marks the 47th heart donation facilitated by Donate Life in Surat. As a result, organs from Surat, including hearts, lungs, and kidneys, have been transplanted across several Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Indore, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Calcutta. The city's generosity has also reached foreign shores, with donated organs transplanted into patients from Ukraine, UAE, Russia, Bangladesh, and Sudan in Mumbai and Chennai hospitals.

While Surat continues to be globally recognised for its textile and diamond industries, its emerging reputation as the 'Organ Donor City' is truly a testament to the compassionate spirit of its residents.
