Industry insiders attribute this growth to rising consumer demand, which has also led to a steady increase in the average prices of used vehicles.

According to Neeraj Singh, Founder and CEO of used car platform Spinny, the value of the used car market in India is expected to reach $40 billion in FY26, with estimated sales volumes between 6.5 to 7 million units. This would outpace the new car market, which currently stands at around $43 billion and reached a historic high of 4.2 million vehicle sales in FY24. The new car segment is projected to grow marginally by one to two percent, reaching around 4.5 to 4.6 million units in FY26.

Cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune are seeing particularly strong growth in used car sales. Singh highlighted that the most notable surge in demand has been for vehicles in the ₹6 to ₹8 lakh price range, especially compact SUVs, which appeal to buyers due to their performance, spaciousness, pricing, and aspirational value.

This increased demand has also pushed up the average transaction price in the used car market. Singh noted that the average selling price of used cars in India currently ranges between ₹4.5 to ₹5 lakh and has risen by 10 to 15 percent over the past two to three years. Budget cars priced between ₹3 to ₹5 lakh have seen a price increase of around 10 to 12 percent, while mid-range vehicles in the ₹5 to ₹10 lakh bracket have experienced a 14 to 16 percent jump. Premium models and SUVs have registered the sharpest price hikes.

The expansion of the used car market is expected to have a positive ripple effect on allied sectors such as tyres and vehicle financing. Singh also projected a robust compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12 to 13 percent in the used car segment over the next seven to eight years, indicating sustained momentum in consumer preference for pre-owned vehicles across urban India.

Faced with rising production and operational costs, leading automakers including Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra & Mahindra, Hyundai, Tata Motors, and others have announced plans to hike vehicle prices across various models.

Maruti Suzuki India, the country’s largest passenger car manufacturer, has stated that it will increase prices of its entire range of models by up to four percent starting next month. The company’s offerings span from the entry-level Alto K10 to the premium multi-purpose vehicle Invicto, priced between Rs 4.23 lakh and Rs 29.22 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Hyundai Motor India, a key competitor of Maruti, has also confirmed a price hike of up to three percent from April 2025. The company cited increased raw material and operating costs as primary reasons for the decision.

Tata Motors is also set to raise prices across all its passenger vehicles, including electric models, making this the second price revision announced by the company in 2025. Similarly, Mahindra & Mahindra plans to increase the prices of its SUVs and commercial vehicles by up to three percent starting April.

Other manufacturers including Kia India, Honda Cars India, Renault India, and BMW have also announced price hikes across their lineups from next month.

As per agency report, Deloitte Partner and Automotive Sector Leader Rajat Mahajan explained that carmakers in India typically raise prices twice a year—once at the beginning of the calendar year and again at the start of the fiscal year. He noted that the extent of the hike often depends on currency fluctuations, as importing components becomes costlier when the Indian rupee weakens against the US dollar. Over the past six months, the rupee has depreciated by approximately three percent against the dollar, impacting sectors that rely heavily on imports.

Mahajan added that declining demand for entry-level vehicles, especially among first-time buyers and rural consumers, has further pressured automakers’ profit margins. With consistent additions of new features in vehicles, production costs have been steadily rising, prompting companies to adjust prices accordingly.

He emphasized that original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are mindful of the price-sensitive nature of the entry-level segment and usually exercise caution when raising prices in this category.

Rohan Kanwar Gupta, Vice President and Sector Head at ICRA Corporate Ratings, stated that such price hikes are commonly implemented at the start of a new calendar or fiscal year to help offset inflationary pressures and increased operational costs due to rising commodity prices.

Rohan Kanwar Gupta, Vice President and Sector Head (Corporate Ratings) at ICRA, added, "Automakers generally increase prices in January to offset operational cost pressures stemming from inflation and rising commodity prices. Many manufacturers have already announced price adjustments for similar reasons."

Announcements by Major Automakers:

Mahindra & Mahindra: Announced a 3% price increase for its SUVs and commercial vehicles to address rising inflation and commodity prices.

MG Motor India: Will implement up to a 3% increase across all models, citing higher input costs and external factors.

Honda Cars India: Considering price hikes, though the exact increase has yet to be finalized.

Luxury Car Segment:

Mercedes-Benz India: Plans a 3% price hike starting January.

Industry experts note that passenger vehicle manufacturers are offering significant discounts on existing models to reduce inventory levels. The planned hikes come as a balancing act to offset rising costs while maintaining competitiveness in a price-sensitive market.
