Dhar, Madhya Pradesh, January 2 – In a long-overdue move, 377 tons of hazardous waste from the now-defunct Union Carbide factory in Bhopal were transported to an industrial unit in Pithampur, Dhar district, for safe disposal. This comes nearly 40 years after the tragic Bhopal Gas Tragedy of 1984.

Transport and Security Measures

The toxic waste was moved in 12 sealed container trucks through a 'green corridor' from Bhopal, 250 kilometers away, under stringent security measures. The convoy reached the Pithampur facility around 4:30 AM on Thursday, as confirmed by Dhar Superintendent of Police Manoj Singh.

“The vehicles are currently stationed within the Pithampur factory premises,” Singh added.

Preparations and Handling

Over 100 workers packed the hazardous material in 30-minute shifts starting Sunday, with health check-ups conducted regularly. “Each worker was given a break after every 30 minutes to ensure their well-being,” said Swatantra Kumar Singh, Director of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy Relief and Rehabilitation Department.

On the night of December 2-3, 1984, the Union Carbide pesticide factory leaked methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas, claiming at least 5,479 lives and leaving thousands with chronic health issues. Despite decades passing, the toxic remnants of the plant remained untreated, causing significant concern.

The disposal follows a directive from the Madhya Pradesh High Court, issued on December 3, which criticized the authorities for their prolonged inaction. The court set a four-week deadline for the waste to be cleared, warning of contempt proceedings if the instructions were not followed.

Swatantra Kumar Singh explained the disposal procedure, stating that the waste would initially be incinerated under the supervision of experts and pollution control authorities. Advanced four-layer filtration systems will ensure the emitted smoke does not pollute the surrounding air. Once verified that no harmful residues remain, the ash will be buried in a sealed pit to prevent contamination of soil or groundwater.

The process is expected to take three months if all goes as planned, though it may extend to nine months, Singh added.

Bhopal, July 14 (IANS) A day after a family of four committed mass suicide due to heavy debt, Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra on Friday said a Special Investigation Team (SIT) would probe the matter and urged the Centre to ban the online loan offering apps.

Bhupendra Vishwakarma had taken a loan from an "online money App" and later he was threatened and his morphed (nude photographs) were shared with his relatives. His mobile was hacked. "I have asked the police to prepare a list to identify Apps offering loans. I would also request the Centre to ban all such applications and tools," Mishra added.

Police said that Bhupendra was operating a small business and had taken loans from an online app. "It was found that he has borrowed Rs 17 lakh from an online app, but, the suicide note suggested that amount could be more. The couple first administered poison to their two minor sons and then hanged themselves," a senior Sub-Inspector posted at Bhopal's Ratibad police station told IANS.

Bodies of Bhupendra Vishwakarma (38), his wife Ritu (35) and their two minor sons -- Rituraj (3) and Rishiraj (9) were taken to their home district Rewa this morning.

Police said, in his suicide note (WhatsApp message), Dhirendra has mentioned that he was under 'debt trap', which forced him to take the extreme step.

He also mentioned that because of the "debt trap", his family was made to suffer a lot and he wasn't able to handle the pressure.

"All the family members were in trouble because of one mistake and I would apologise to all of them. I was doing a job for an online firm, which offered money, but later, I realised that I was in debt trap. I would apologise to my family and parents, please forgive me," the suicide note read.

Bhopal, June 19 (IANS) A youth was tied with a chain and forced to bark and act like a dog by a group of people in Bhopal. The miscreants also abused the victim even as he pleaded for mercy.

A video of the shocking incident, which took place on Sunday, has gone viral on social media.

In the 50-second video, a group of people could be heard shouting at the youth, "Kutta ban... Bol Sahil bhai, sorry (act like a dog, say sorry to Sahil)."

One of the men could be seen holding the leash as others ask him to apologise, reportedly over a social media post.

The petrified youth, wearing a black shirt, could be seen pleading for mercy in the video.

"Sahil Bhai mere baap hai, mere bade bhai hai (Sahil is my father, he is like my elder brother). Meri maa unki maa, unki maa meri maa (My mother is his mother, his mother is my mother)," the youth says.

"I have said sorry. I have not done anything," he says.

When asked who told him to upload the story, the youth replies, "I did that at the behest of Shahrukh. He threatened me."

Taking note of the viral video, Madhya Pradesh Home Monister Narottam Mishra on Monday directed the police commissioner to take prompt action in the matter.

Within the next few hours, three accused were arrested who have been identified as Sameer, Sajid and Faizan. The victim has been identified as Vijay Ramchandani.

According to Mishra, the accused have been booked under the National Security Act (NSA).

"I have asked the police commissioner to submit his reply as to why the concerned police station did not take immediate action. Three accused have been arrested. The in-charge of the concerned police station has been sent to police lines," Mishra said.

Bhopal, June 12 (IANS) Upset over their daughter marrying a man from different religion, her parents in Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur performed last rites and disowned her.

The Jabalpur family performed 'pind-dan' and 'mrityu bhoj' in the name of their alive daughter.

The family also distributed condolence cards to inform relatives and the members of the society about the 'death' of their daughter on April 2'.

Jabalpur-based Brahmin family on Sunday reached Gwarighat of holy river Narmada where they performed the last rites and other post-death rituals.

The family did this soon after a marriage reception party was organised by the woman's in-laws. Already upset with interfaith marriage, the family felt humiliated after seeing the invitation card of the post-marriage reception party, which mentioned that "Hindu girl has changed her religion and became Muslim."

Upset with the developments, the woman's family staged a protest at Jabalpur district SP office, which was supported by right wing Dharma Sabha. The family alleged that the marriage was conducted under the conspiracy of 'love jihad'.

However, according to the district administration, the couple got married on January 4. Administration also claimed that both families were informed about the marriage before its registration. However, the woman's mother told the press that her daughter had 'deceived' the family by getting married without their knowledge.

Local police also released a statement confirming that the "marriage had occurred with the consent of both families. It also stated that the woman's family had even provided various gifts for the wedding."

Bhopal, June 8 (IANS) More than 48 hours after a little girl fell into a borewell in Madhya Pradesh's Sehore district, a team of robotic experts and the Army on Thursday joined the rescue operation.

The two-and-half-years-old girl, who was stuck at 25-30 ft depth in the 300-ft deep borewell, has slipped further down, according to Sehore district administration.

"We have lowered a robot into the borewell to collect information and we are processing the data by scanning to know about the child's health condition," Mahesh Arya, the robotic team in-charge told the media.

A team of the Indian Army also joined the rescue operation late on Wednesday night. However, it was yet to ascertain the condition of the child.

According to the district administration officials, oxygen was being supplied to the girl in the borewell through a pipe. With more than 46 hours gone, the task to pull the girl out of the borewell has become more difficult as she has slipped further down and got stuck at a depth of nearly 100 ft, as per the officials.

The girl, named Srishti, fell into the borewell at around 1 p.m. on Tuesday and since then efforts have been on to rescue her.

As many as 12 earth-moving and other machines were also currently engaged in the rescue operation, they said. CM Chouhan and a team of officials were in touch with the district authorities to supervise the rescue operation, they said.

Bhopal, June 3 (IANS) It was midnight on May 27 and 55-year-old Jakir Sheikh was sleeping in his home in Berchha area of Shajapur district of Madhya Pradesh, around 150 km from state capital Bhopal, when a policeman entered his house by jumping over the boundary wall.

Hearing knocking on the door, Sheikh opened it and found the cop, Shubhash Kharadi, who was a close friend of his 25-year-old daughter. Sheikh questioned Kharadi why he had come to his home so late at night and that too by jumping over the boundary wall. An argument erupted between them.

In the meantime, Sheikh's daughter and a son also woke up and came to the main door. According to the police Kharadi (26), a constable posted as a driver in the neighbouring district of Dewas, had come to Sheikh's house to elope with his daughter. Kharadi and Sheikh's daughter were in a relationship for the last six months.

The argument between the two sides continued for the next few minutes when all of a sudden Kharadi took out his service revolver and opened fire on all of them, including the daughter. Hearing the loud screams and the sound of gunfire, the neighbours rushed to the spot. By then the accused had run away from the crime scene.

Sheikh, his son and daughter were rushed to a nearby hospital, where Sheikh, who had received multiple bullet wounds, was declared dead on arrival, while his daughter and son were later referred to Indore for treatment.

The police began an investigation into the murder and attempt to murder. However, another twist in the crime unfolded a few hours later after a body was found at the Berchha railway tracks. The police reached the spot and found that it was Kharadi's body, for whom they were searching since the morning.

From there the entire story of the crime started unfolding. Ennim Totto, the investigating officer (IO) in the case, told IANS that "Kharadi was in a relationship with Shivani Khan (Sheikh's daughter). During investigation, it was found that they were talking to each other through social media for the last six months. The woman's father was against this relationship and Shivani had also agreed with her father. But it did not go down well with Kharadi and he went to try and elope with her that night when the crime took place."

Totto said that Shivani and Kharadi had known each other since their school days as they studied in the same school in the Berchha area.

"They (Kharadi and Shivani) were known to each other since they were in school, but the call record suggested that they were in a relationship for the last six months. Shivani had told Kharadi that she won't continue with this relationship as her father did not approve of it. Kharadi became furious and he went to her home to take her with him forcibly, but her father resisted and he opened fire," Totto added.

During the investigation, the police also found that Kharadi had posted his photographs with Shivani in his Facebook account. "The investigation of the case is still underway, however, prima facie, it appears Kharadi committed suicide by jumping before a runing train. Shivani has been referred to Bombay hospital in Indore and her condition is improving gradually," the officer told IANS on Friday.

Shajapur SP Yashpal Singh Rajput said this kind of incident creates havoc in the society.

"Killing someone and committing suicide are both crimes and that is what Kharadi did. But, it could have been prevented had the families from both the sides sat down to discuss it. Such incidents have an impact on society," Rajput told IANS.
