New Delhi, Feb 16 (IANS) ChatGPT maker OpenAI has unveiled Sora, a new text-to-video model that can generate videos up to a minute long while maintaining visual quality and adherence to the user’s prompt.

Sora is a diffusion model, which generates a video by starting off with one that looks like static noise and gradually transforms it by removing the noise over many steps.

“Sora is capable of generating entire videos all at once or extending generated videos to make them longer,” the company said.

In addition to being able to generate a video solely from text instructions, the model is also able to take an existing still image and generate a video from it, “animating the image’s contents with accuracy and attention to small detail”.

Similar to GPT models, Sora uses a transformer architecture, unlocking superior scaling performance.

The company said it is making Sora available to “red teamers (domain experts) to assess critical areas for harms or risks”.

“We are also granting access to a number of visual artists, designers, and filmmakers to gain feedback on how to advance the model to be most helpful for creative professionals,” OpenAI said in a statement.

Sora will be able to generate complex scenes with multiple characters, specific types of motion, and accurate details of the subject and background.

“The model understands not only what the user has asked for in the prompt, but also how those things exist in the physical world,” according to OpenAI.

Sora can also create multiple shots within a single generated video that accurately persist characters and visual style.

The company, however, admitted that the current model has its own weaknesses.

“It may struggle with accurately simulating the physics of a complex scene, and may not understand specific instances of cause and effect. For example, a person might take a bite out of a cookie, but afterward, the cookie may not have a bite mark,” explained OpenAI.

The company further said that it will take important safety steps ahead of making Sora available in OpenAI’s products.

“We are working with red teamers — domain experts in areas like misinformation, hateful content, and bias — who will be adversarially testing the model. We’re also building tools to help detect misleading content such as a detection classifier that can tell when a video was generated by Sora,” the company explained.

New Delhi, Jan 16 (IANS) OpenAI's GPT Store, which the company launched last week, is being flooded with AI (artificial intelligence) girlfriend bots despite usage policy rules.

GPT Store is where users on its premium plans can sell and share customised AI models based on the company’s large language models (LLMs).

According to an analysis by Quartz, a search for the term “girlfriend” on the new GPT store brought at least eight “girlfriend” AI chatbots, including “Korean Girlfriend,” “Virtual Sweetheart,” “Your girlfriend Scarlett,” “Your AI girlfriend, Tsu".

On clicking on the chatbot “Virtual Sweetheart", users will receive starting prompts like “What does your dream girl look like?” and “Share with me your darkest secret", the report said.

However, OpenAI's usage policy for its new store states that "GPTs dedicated to fostering romantic companionship or performing regulated activities" are not allowed.

The company also noted that "these policies may be enforced automatically at submission time or applied retroactively upon further review".

Relationship chatbots are, certainly, popular apps. According to statistics from mobile app analytics company data.ai, seven of the 30 AI chatbot apps that users in the US downloaded in 2023 from the Apple or Google Play store were related to AI friends, girlfriends, or companions.

Some users reported that they had formed serious emotional attachments or even fallen in love with AI companions.

Meanwhile, since announcing the GPT Builder programme in November, OpenAI said that more than 3 million GPTs have been created by users. To access the GPT Store, users must be subscribed to one of OpenAI’s premium ChatGPT plans -- ChatGPT Plus, ChatGPT Enterprise, or the newly-launched ChatGPT Team.

New Delhi, Jan 5 (IANS) ChatGPT developer OpenAI is set to officially open its online GPT Store next week where users can sell and share customised AI models based on the company’s large language models (LLMs).

In an email to people signed as GPT Builders, OpenAI asked them to double-check that their GPT creations meet brand guidelines and reminded them to make their GPTs public.

The store was set to launch in November last year but got delayed amid the intense drama over OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s firing and rehiring.

Now, OpenAI plans to launch a store for GPTs, custom apps based on its text-generating AI models, next week, reports The Verge.

In November, Altman-run OpenAI announced to roll out custom versions of its AI chatbot ChatGPT that people can create for a specific purpose.

Called GPTs, these AI models are a new way for anyone to create a tailored version of ChatGPT to be more helpful in their daily life, at specific tasks, at work, or at home, and then share that creation with others.

For example, GPTs can help you learn the rules to any board game, help teach your kids math, or design stickers.

“Anyone can easily build their own GPT, no coding is required. You can make them for yourself, just for your company’s internal use, or for everyone,” the company said during its first developers’ conference.

In the coming months, you’ll also be able to earn money based on how many people are using your GPT.

San Francisco, March 31 (IANS) Microsoft-owned OpenAI, the company that created AI chatbot ChatGPT, is facing a new complaint with the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) being asked to investigate the company and suspend its commercial deployment of large language models, including ChatGPT.

The nonprofit research group Center for AI and Digital Policy (CAIDP) made public its complaint against OpenAI on Thursday, alleging the company violated Section 5 of the FTC Act, which prohibits unfair and deceptive business practices, reports CNBC.

According to CAIDP, GPT-4 is "biased, deceptive, and a risk to privacy and public safety".

Moreover, the AI policy group said the large language model fails to meet the agency's standards for AI to be "transparent, explainable, fair, and empirically sound while fostering accountability", according to the report.

The group is asking the FTC to require OpenAI to establish an independent assessment of GPT products before they are deployed in the future.

Further, the report said that it also wants the FTC to establish a public incident reporting system for GPT-4, similar to the systems it already has in place for reporting consumer fraud.

The AI policy group also requests that the agency undertake a rulemaking initiative to develop standards for generative AI products.

Meanwhile, several top entrepreneurs and AI researchers, including Tesla and Twitter CEO Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak, Co-founder of Apple, have written an open letter, asking all AI labs to immediately pause training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4 for at least 6 months.

Arguing that AI systems with human-competitive intelligence can pose profound risks to society and humanity, more than 1,100 global AI researchers and executives signed the open letter to pause "all giant AI experiments".

San Francisco, March 30 (IANS) Microsoft has announced that it is bringing ads to its AI-powered Bing chat, its new search agent powered by OpenAI's GPT-4.

Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft corporate vice president, in a blogpost said, the company is "exploring placing ads in the chat experience to share the ad revenue with partners whose content contributed to the chat response".

According to the company, there are now more than 100 million daily active users of Bing.

New scenarios like chat are driving engagement, including more than 100 million chats.

The company also mentioned that of the millions of users in Preview, one-third are new to Bing, creating a net new opportunity for publishers.

Seeing the encouragement the Bing chat is getting, the tech giant shared updates on their goals, approach, and early progress, which it will be bringing to the AI chatbot.

"First, we want to drive more traffic to publishers in this new world of search. It is a top goal for us, and we measure success in part by how much traffic we are sending from the new Bing/Edge. Second, we want to increase revenue to publishers. We seek to do this by both driving more traffic to them through new features like chat and answers and by also pioneering the future of advertising in these new mediums," the company said.

"Lastly, we want to go about this in a collaborative fashion working with the industry to continue to foster a healthy ecosystem," it added.

New Delhi, March 25 (IANS) Elon Musk tried to take control of OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, in early 2018 but Sam Altman and OpenAI's other founders rejected Musk's proposal.

Musk, in turn, walked away from the company and reneged on a massive planned donation, reports Semafor.

Musk told Altman that he believed the "venture had fallen fatally behind Google".

But the Twitter CEO failed to convince OpenAI founders to take over the AI chatbot ChatGPT creator.

When Musk walked away, he resigned from its board in 2018 citing a conflict of interest with his work at Tesla.

According to a Semafor report, he also reneged on a promise to supply $1 billion in funding, contributing only $100 million before he walked.

This left OpenAI with "no ability to pay the astronomical fees associated with training AI models on supercomputers".

In March, 2019, OpenAI announced it was creating a for-profit entity so that it could raise enough money to pay for the compute power.

"We want to increase our ability to raise capital while still serving our mission, and no pre-existing legal structure we know of strikes the right balance," the company wrote at the time.

Less than six months later, Microsoft infused $1 billion in OpenAI, and the rest is history.

They built a supercomputer to train massive models that eventually created ChatGPT and the image generator DALL-E.

The latest language model, GPT-4, has 1 trillion parameters.

Musk has now raised questions over how a non-profit has become a $30 billion maximum-profit company for Satya Nadella-run tech giant.

"I'm still confused as to how a non-profit to which I donated $100 million somehow became a $30 billion market cap for-profit. If this is legal, why doesn't everyone do it?" he quipped.

Musk has also paused OpenAI access to Twitter database.

Musk said that OpenAI was created as an open source (which is why I named it "Open" AI), a non-profit company to serve as a counterweight to Google.

"But now it has become a closed-source, maximum-profit company effectively controlled by Microsoft. Not what I intended at all," the Twitter CEO posted.

He responded to a follower who said: "Elon Musk says that AI is 'one of the biggest risks' to civilisation and needs to be regulated. He co-founded OpenAI."

ChatGPT is an advanced form of AI that is powered by the GPT-3 large language model. It is programmed to recognise human language and generate responses based on massive amounts of data. According to Musk, "ChatGPT has illustrated to people just how advanced AI has become. AI has been advanced for a while. It just didn't have a user interface that was accessible to most people".

Musk stepped down from OpenAI's board of directors in 2018 and no longer owns a stake in the company.

"Initially, it was created as an open-source nonprofit. Now it is closed-source and for-profit. I don't have an open stake in OpenAI, nor am I on the board, nor do I control it in any way," he mentioned.

As part of his decision to create OpenAI, Musk stated that Google wasn't paying enough attention to AI safety.
