The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) has launched the 'India Rough Diamond Show' (IRDS) in collaboration with the Surat International Diamond Trade Centre (SIDC), marking a significant step towards establishing India as a global rough diamond tendering hub.

The show will be held from April 6 to May 10, 2026, at the Surat Diamond Bourse (SDB), which is considered the world's largest office complex and a major center for diamond trade. Through IRDS, an organized and transparent tendering platform for rough diamonds has been made available in India for the first time, reducing dependence on international centers. The participation of global companies such as Star Gems and Coin International has strengthened international confidence in the event.

It is estimated that approximately 100 million US dollars (around ₹1,000 crore) worth of rough diamonds will be showcased during the show. Notably, this platform will also allow small and medium-sized diamond manufacturers (MSMEs) to access rough diamonds directly. It is expected that over 250 MSME units will participate in the weekly tender sessions, with more than 1,000 units likely to take part throughout the event.

GJEPC Chairman Kirit Bhansali stated that this initiative is a significant effort to bring global supply closer to India's manufacturing sector, which will reduce costs and increase transparency in trade. Meanwhile, Diamond Panel Convener Anup Mehta described it as a solution to a long-standing need in the industry. Regional Chairman Jayanti Sawaliya mentioned that hosting this show in Surat will further strengthen the city's global position in the diamond industry and provide better opportunities for local traders.

It is noteworthy that India processes over 90 percent of the world's diamonds, but most rough diamond trade has historically taken place in centers like Antwerp, Dubai, and Tel Aviv. The IRDS could bring about a significant change in this arrangement by bringing it to India. This initiative will not only facilitate trade but also play a crucial role in establishing India as a strong trading hub in the global diamond value chain.

Surat: The diamond cooperation between India and Botswana has received a significant boost following the official visit of the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council to Botswana last month. Continuing this momentum, Botswana’s Minister of Minerals and Energy, Bogolo Joy Kenewendo, visited the GJEPC regional office in Surat to hold detailed discussions with the Indian diamond industry.

It is noteworthy that during the recent tour of Botswana, a detailed White Paper focused on strengthening the diamond cooperation between the two nations was submitted by the council to the President of Botswana. As per agency report, this initiative received widespread appreciation from the government and local media in that country. Upon her arrival in Surat, the Minister and her delegation were warmly welcomed by the GJEPC Gujarat Regional Chairman, Jayanti Savaliya. Highlighting the strategic partnership between India and Botswana in the global diamond value chain, he stated that in the current challenging global scenario, both countries need to move forward with greater synergy and trust.

Savaliya specifically emphasized the importance of providing India’s MSME diamond manufacturers with direct access to rough diamonds from Botswana. During the meeting, the Director of the Special Notified Zone at the Surat International Diamond Centre, Hitesh Shah, apprised the delegation of the working mechanism of the SNZ, explaining that this system ensures transparent, compliance-oriented, and competitive pricing for mining companies.

In his capacity as the SIDC Chairman, Savaliya informed the visitors that over 25 rough diamond viewing events have been organized at the Surat SNZ-SIDC so far and urged the Minister to encourage mining companies from her country to hold such events more frequently in the city. The Minister appreciated the world-class infrastructure of the Surat Diamond Bourse and demonstrated a positive stance regarding the proposal for direct trade of rough diamonds in Surat.

However, she noted that considering the existing global market conditions, any such step would need to be taken forward with a strategic and balanced plan to ensure mutual benefit. The meeting was described as highly useful and futuristic, reiterating the shared commitment of India and Botswana to further empower the global diamond industry through structured, long-term, and sustainable cooperation.

Surat, known for its textile, diamond, and pharmaceutical industries, is expected to face significant economic challenges due to this decision.

As per agency report, India’s exports to the United States reached $86.51 billion in 2024–25, marking an 11.5% increase from the previous year. With the imposition of the new tariffs, the country’s GDP growth rate is projected to decline by nearly half a percentage point.

The textile industry, particularly the man-made fiber (MMF) sector in Surat, is expected to be the hardest hit. According to the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI), textile exports from India to the US may decline by approximately 12%, resulting in a potential loss of $1.5 billion. SGCCI President Nikhil Madrasi emphasized that the tariff would have a direct and serious impact on Surat’s trade-dependent economy.

SGCCI Vice President Ashok Jirawala highlighted that over 1.8 million people are associated with Surat’s textile sector, which includes around 35,000 weavers, 350 mills, 200 traders, and 50 texturizing units. The increased cost of Indian textiles in the US market is likely to shift demand towards competitors like Vietnam and Bangladesh. He warned that if the US imposes lower tariffs on countries such as Bangladesh, Indian textile exports would further suffer.

Former SGCCI President Vijay Mewawala noted that the tariff will severely affect India’s apparel exports, where Surat serves as the backbone for fabric supply. The hike in tariff from August 1 could lead to canceled orders, especially from American buyers who previously sourced large quantities from India. Small and medium-scale textile businesses are particularly vulnerable to this disruption, as international buyers may now look to other countries for cost-effective sourcing.

The diamond, gems, and pharmaceutical sectors are also expected to bear the brunt of the tariff. SGCCI Honorary Treasurer CA Mitesh Modi stated that Surat’s diamond industry, which employs nearly 1 million workers, will likely experience a decline in polishing and export activities. He added that India's pharmaceutical exports to the US, currently valued at $10 billion, could also face setbacks. Industrial zones such as Ankleshwar, Vapi, and Dahej, known for chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing, will not remain unaffected.

CA Mitesh Modi suggested that India must urgently engage in trade negotiations with the US to seek relief from the new tariffs. A formal trade agreement could potentially mitigate the impact and restore balance to the affected sectors.

Currently, all eyes are on whether the United States will extend similar tariffs to other countries including China, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Gulf nations. Until a revised trade policy or agreement is established, the new tariffs will remain in effect.

The imposition of a 25% tariff by the US on Indian goods presents a serious economic challenge for Surat, a major industrial hub. Core sectors such as textiles, diamonds, and pharmaceuticals, which support the livelihoods of millions, are now exploring alternative strategies and awaiting decisive policy interventions. Swift diplomatic efforts are essential to ensure economic stability for both India and Surat’s industrial backbone.

The announcement came 74 days after a meeting held between Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and representatives of the All Gujarat Diamond Association on March 11.

As per agency report, Minister of State for Home and Industries Harsh Sanghavi, while announcing the package, said that children of diamond workers who have been unemployed since March 31, 2024, will receive an education fee waiver of up to ₹13,500 for one academic year. The benefit will be transferred directly to eligible beneficiaries through the DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer) system, provided the worker had at least three years of experience in the diamond industry.

The diamond sector in Gujarat, particularly in Surat, has been hit hard over the past three years due to global factors including an economic slowdown in the United States and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. This downturn led to massive job losses, triggering protests and even some tragic incidents of suicide among affected workers.

To support micro-scale diamond units, the government will offer a term loan of up to ₹5 lakh with an interest subsidy of 9 percent for three years from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2028. Additionally, such units will be exempt from electricity duty for one year starting July 1, 2025.

Interested units must apply within a month at the District Industries Centre by submitting documents including business registration, loan sanction letter, GST registration, turnover records for the past three years, and electricity usage data.

Eligibility criteria include registration before March 31, 2025, classification under the micro-enterprise category (with plant and machinery investment under ₹2.5 crore), and a reduction of at least 25% in electricity consumption in 2024–25 compared to the previous year.

To ensure transparent implementation, the state has formed a District-Level Approval Committee chaired by the District Collector. The committee will include officials from labor, employment, education departments, a lead bank, and representatives of the diamond association. The District Industries Centre’s general manager will serve as the committee secretary, and the committee will meet at least twice a month.

The announcement event at Surat Circuit House was attended by Harsh Sanghavi, Surat Mayor Dakshesh Mavani, BJP city president Paresh Patel, MP Mukesh Dalal, MP Prabhu Vasava, Forest and Environment Minister Mukesh Patel, Education Minister Praful Pansheriya, and leaders Sandeep Desai and Pravin Ghoghari.

This relief initiative is expected to bring much-needed economic and social stability to the diamond industry and its workforce across Gujarat.

According to data released by the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), the drop is largely due to ongoing geopolitical tensions and weak demand from key markets such as the United States and China.

As per an agency report, there was a slight recovery in the month of March, with exports rising by 1.02 percent to USD 2.583 billion (Rs 22,340.89 crore) from USD 2.557 billion (Rs 21,228.71 crore) during the same month last year.

GJEPC Chairman Kirit Bhansali explained that the sustained decline in demand from the US and China, coupled with a 10–15 percent fall in raw diamond prices, had significantly impacted the export value.

Exports of cut and polished diamonds fell by 16.75 percent to USD 13.29 billion (Rs 1.12 lakh crore) from USD 15.97 billion (Rs 1.32 lakh crore) a year earlier. Similarly, exports of polished lab-grown diamonds dropped 9.64 percent to USD 1.267 billion (Rs 10,716.13 crore) compared to USD 1.402 billion (Rs 11,612.36 crore).

Gold jewellery exports remained nearly flat, falling marginally by 0.11 percent to USD 11.215 billion (Rs 94,937.78 crore) in FY 2024–25 from USD 11.227 billion (Rs 93,066.82 crore) in the previous year.

Silver jewellery exports saw a steep decline of 40.58 percent, falling to USD 961.8 million (Rs 8,115.32 crore) from USD 1.618 billion (Rs 13,424.4 crore). In contrast, platinum jewellery exports rose by 11.79 percent to USD 182.7 million (Rs 1,547.3 crore) from USD 163.5 million (Rs 1,354.41 crore).

The controversy stems from bounced security cheques that were previously given by the traders to the company. According to diamond industry member Dineshbhai Navdiya, the cheques were submitted as part of earlier financial agreements, but were recently deposited by the company, resulting in them bouncing. Following this, legal action was initiated by the company against several traders and their wives, sparking anger and frustration among the affected families.

Trader Alpeshbhai stated that they had already paid as much as possible under the supervision of their trade association and believed all transactions had been settled. He expressed concern that despite this, the company proceeded with legal cases based on the security cheques, which has added to the financial and mental stress they are already facing.

The protest caught the attention of Varachha Road MLA Kumar Kanani, who arrived at the scene to offer support. He remarked that traders had already surrendered assets and paid up to 50% of dues following significant losses incurred six years ago. He added that such partial settlements are a common practice in Surat’s diamond industry, where feasible payments are considered final in mutual understanding. The decision by the company to now file legal cases against 12 traders and their spouses, he said, was unfortunate.

Kanani emphasized that the presence of families at the protest reflects the deep emotional turmoil they are enduring. He urged the company to show compassion and resolve the matter through mutual agreement, noting that no one can repay debts at the cost of their life.

As per agency report, the dispute has now become a hot topic within Surat’s diamond industry, with many watching closely to see what course of action the company and authorities will take in the coming days.

While the diamond polishing industry is experiencing a severe slowdown, resulting in the unemployment of nearly 50,000 workers, the textile industry is facing an acute labor shortage of around 200,000 workers. Industry experts suggest that if unemployed diamond workers consider transitioning into the textile sector, both industries could benefit significantly.

As per report, workers involved in diamond polishing, who were earning around Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000 per month, could earn up to Rs 30,000 monthly in the textile sector. The city’s textile industry currently employs around 10 to 12 lakh people directly or indirectly, while the diamond industry engages 8 to 10 lakh workers.

Though market fluctuations are common in any industrial setup, the prolonged recession in the diamond sector has impacted workers' financial stability. Meanwhile, the textile industry is struggling with a shortage of laborers in various segments including weaving, job work, embroidery, dyeing, and printing mills.

Vijay Mangukiya, President of Surat Weavers Association, stated that the textile industry is open to welcoming workers from the diamond sector. He added that most of the jobs in textile units require minimal training, and within 15 to 20 days, a worker can acquire the necessary skills to earn a steady income of Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000 per month.

Mangukiya also urged the government to establish training centers to skill workers for the textile industry, which could help reemploy those affected by the diamond industry slowdown. He recommended opening similar training facilities for homemakers as well, allowing them to become economically self-reliant by participating in the textile workforce.

However, Bhavesh Tank, Vice President of the Diamond Workers’ Union, expressed concern over the feasibility of transitioning to a completely new profession. He questioned whether labor laws are properly enforced in the textile sector and highlighted the difficulties that long-time diamond workers may face in adapting to new skill sets.

Ritvik Shiyani, a diamond worker, echoed similar concerns, noting that the specialized skills acquired in the diamond industry may not be applicable in other fields. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that exploring alternative employment options has become essential in the face of the ongoing crisis.

With the diamond sector in decline and the textile industry in urgent need of manpower, a potential shift of workers between these two industries could offer a viable solution. Coordinated efforts by industry leaders and the government could provide relief to unemployed workers while simultaneously strengthening the textile industry’s growth trajectory.

A senior official from the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) shared that the improving sentiment in China could benefit India's significant diamond processing sector.

China's diamond market, estimated to be worth around USD 9 billion, has faced sluggishness in recent years due to the country’s economic slowdown and a declining marriage rate. In 2024, the Chinese diamond sector generated approximately USD 5.7 billion in revenue. Market analysts predict a gradual rise, expecting the market to grow to around USD 7.2 billion by 2030.

Over the past two years, demand for diamonds in China has dropped by up to 50 percent, while wholesale diamond prices have fallen nearly 40 percent. These developments have had a direct impact on India, which accounts for roughly one-third of the global trade in cut and polished diamonds.

According to GJEPC data released last week, India’s gem and jewellery exports fell by 23.49 percent year-on-year in February 2025, amounting to USD 2.42 billion. The drop is attributed to weakening demand in both the US and Chinese markets.

Kirit Bhansali, Chairman of GJEPC, stated that stable diamond prices combined with signs of recovery in Chinese demand are encouraging indicators for the global industry. He added that India’s strong manufacturing base is well positioned to take advantage of this opportunity.

GJEPC Vice Chairman Shaunak Parekh noted that after a prolonged downturn, sales are beginning to stabilize, and this renewed demand could potentially reshape India’s diamond manufacturing sector in the coming months.

About ‘Scan Karega India’

“Scan Karega India” is a nationwide initiative by DRC India designed to educate and empower consumers about the importance of verifying the authenticity of diamonds. “With the rise of lab-grown diamonds, distinguishing between natural and lab-grown diamonds has become increasingly challenging. This campaign seeks to highlight the critical role that advanced scanning technology for lab-grown diamond detection plays in ensuring diamond authenticity.” says Mr. Hardik Patel, CEO of DRC.

Why ‘Scan Karega India’ is Essential

1. Unmasking the Truth: Lab-grown diamonds can appear identical to natural diamonds to the naked eye, making it easy for unscrupulous sellers to misrepresent lab diamonds as natural ones. The “Scan Karega India” campaign aims to educate consumers about this issue, enabling them to make informed purchasing decisions.

2. Protecting Consumer Trust: Accidental purchases of lab-grown diamonds can significantly damage consumer trust and tarnish brand reputations. By promoting the use of scanning technology for lab-grown diamond detection, DRC India aims to safeguard the integrity of the diamond industry, ensuring consumers receive exactly what they pay for.

3. Supporting Industry Standards: The campaign advocates for the adoption of standardised scanning and verification processes across the diamond industry. This effort helps maintain high industry standards and fosters transparency and accountability.

How to Participate in ‘Scan Karega India’

Spread the Word: Share the “Scan Karega India” message with friends and family. Use the hashtag #ScanKaregaIndia on social media to amplify the campaign’s reach.

Use Scanning Technology: Jewellers are encouraged to incorporate diamond scanning technology into their businesses to assure customers of the authenticity of their purchases.

Stay Informed: Follow DRC India on www.drcindia.in and social media channels for the latest updates and information on diamond verification.

Join the Movement

Further Mr. Hardik Patel, CEO of DRC mentions “DRC India believes in the power of collective action. By joining the “Scan Karega India” campaign, you contribute to a larger movement aimed at preserving the authenticity and trust in the diamond industry. Together, we can ensure every diamond tells its true story.”

About DRC India: Diamtech Research Centre Private Limited is a pioneer in lab-grown diamond detection technology, dedicated to advancing transparency and trust in the global diamond trade. With a focus on innovation and reliability, DRC India continues to set new benchmarks in diamond authentication technology.

Despite a modest academic background, his early exposure to the diamond trade through his father, Shri Bakul Limbasiya, ignited a passion for the industry within him. He immersed himself in mastering the practical aspects of business.

Under his father’s mentorship, Mr Limbasiya embarked on a mission to revolutionise the diamond industry. In 2002, at a time when lab-grown diamonds were primarily low-grade and meant for industrial use, Bhathwari Technologies achieved a breakthrough by cracking the code for producing high-grade gemstone-quality diamonds through the Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) process at commercial scale.

The company has not looked back since and is the world’s largest producer of CVD diamonds with an annual production of 5 million carats. Mr Limbasiya’s ability to learn swiftly and adapt to change has been instrumental in steering the Group through rapid expansion.

Showcasing its commitment to self-reliance, the Group also designs and manufactures its own machinery and plasma reactors. Mr Limbasiya takes pride in the fact that every component of their machines is made in India, ensuring cost-effectiveness and superior quality diamond yields.

Says Mr Limbasiya, “We are the largest player in CVD diamond production in the world and hold more than 30% of the country’s total lab-grown diamond production capacity, but our success is not just about the diamonds we produce but about the innovation and perseverance that drive us forward. We are not just shaping diamonds, but are shaping the industry’s future.”

Looking to the future, Mr Limbasiya sees boundless opportunities in the lab-grown diamond market and remains committed to maintaining the group’s position at the forefront of the industry. He is not just a leader but a visionary guiding the Group towards a future where innovation, sustainability, and self-reliance converge to shape the landscape of the diamond industry.

Growing up in a family deeply rooted in the diamond trade for over 50 years, Sanket was drawn to the intricacies of diamond manufacturing from a young age.

Accompanying his grandfather to the diamond processing unit at a young age, Sanket was intrigued by the terminology used by workers, particularly the reference to diamonds as “stones.” This sparked his curiosity, leading him to ponder how diamonds, which come from rocks or stones, could be created. Sanket’s inquisitive mind was sparked by a simple yet profound question – “If a diamond comes from a rock or stone, why can’t we make that rock?”

With a keen interest in exploring this concept further, Sanket pursued his education in Business Administration, earning degrees from the London School of Business & Finance and Bellerbys College, London. Armed with knowledge and fueled by curiosity, he embarked on a journey to discover the possibilities within the diamond industry.

Driven by a desire to innovate, Sanket ventured into the family business. However, he found himself drawn to a different path – one that involved cultivating diamonds rather than extracting them from the earth. This led to the inception of Greenlab Diamonds, a pioneering venture dedicated to the production of lab-grown diamonds.

Sanket’s vision for Greenlab Diamonds was rooted in sustainability and technological advancement. Leading the company’s Research and Development department, he implemented cutting-edge technology to grow rough diamonds from carbon seeds. Through meticulous processes, these rough diamonds were transformed into polished gems of exceptional quality, positioning Greenlab as a leading supplier of CVD diamonds.

Sanket’s relentless pursuit of excellence has positioned Greenlab Diamonds as a leading supplier, with a staggering monthly production capacity exceeding 2 lakh carats. His commitment to sustainability is evident in the company’s operations, with renewable energy powering the Greenlab Diamond foundry.

Beyond the boardroom, Sanket is a passionate advocate for sustainable diamonds, championing the cause on a global stage. His presence is felt at prestigious events such as JCK, JS London, the Hong Kong show, and Italy’s Vicenzaoro, where he showcases the potential of lab-grown diamonds and educates consumers about their ethical and sustainable sourcing. Under the leadership of Sanket Patel, Greenlab Diamonds achieved consecutive recognition from GJEPC for two years, being honored as the top exporter in the Lab Grown Diamond sector in 2023 and for its remarkable exponential growth in the LGD sector in 2022.

Sanket’s impact is profound, as he spearheads initiatives to promote the “Make in India” ethos and expand the domestic market for lab-grown diamonds. Despite his youth, Patel’s exceptional managerial skills have seen him successfully oversee a workforce of 3000 employees, with a focus on employee wellness as a cornerstone of Greenlab’s success. His unwavering dedication to quality has earned Greenlab Diamonds a reputation for excellence in the field of CVD diamonds.

In Sanket Patel, we see not just an entrepreneur but a visionary whose passion, innovation, and commitment to sustainability are shaping the future of diamonds. With Greenlab Diamonds, he is not just redefining an industry but paving the way for a more sustainable and ethical future for the environment, employment and economy of generations to come.
