The inauguration was conducted by NTPC Kawas Project Head, Suresh John David.

As per agency report, addressing the gathering, David emphasized the lab's significance in fostering scientific thinking among students. He highlighted that the advanced equipment provided in the lab would not only enhance students' intellectual capabilities but also guide them towards innovative scientific learning. The facility aims to prepare students for careers in science, engineering, technology, and research by offering practical exposure to these fields.

The STEM lab, featuring approximately 80 modern models, was developed by Bengaluru-based agency Experifun. Along with setting up the lab, the agency provided training to teachers from all 13 schools in the Pinjarat cluster, ensuring that over 400 students could effectively benefit from the initiative. To ensure sustained success, the agency will conduct follow-up training and evaluations after six months.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Swati Mahila Mandal-NTPC Kawas President, Mrs. Shanija M. George, along with NTPC Kawas Additional General Manager (HR), Sanjit Kumar Minz. Principals, teachers, students, and parents from the Pinjarat cluster also participated in the event, marking a significant step in advancing practical education in the region.

Expressing gratitude, Pinjarat Primary School Headmaster, Takhat Bhai Patel, acknowledged the impact of this initiative, stating that earlier, learning was limited to theoretical concepts due to a lack of practical models. With the introduction of the STEM lab, students now have the opportunity to observe and understand scientific principles in real-world applications, thereby stimulating curiosity and innovation.

Patel further noted that the geographical distance from NTPC had made access to such resources challenging. However, with the establishment of this lab, students would now benefit significantly, and the initiative could also contribute to increased school enrollments.

As the project enters its third phase, it continues to redefine the agricultural landscape in the region, transforming farmers into smart agri-entrepreneurs by introducing them to sustainable and innovative methods of farming.

The impact of Jeevika Samriddhi project is tangible and far reaching. By introducing ‘Climate Smart Agricultural Practices’ and allied interventions, it has elevated the lives of over 400 farming households in its initial phases. Now, with the third phase underway, it aims to empower an additional 500 farming households in the villages of Parmanpur, Kumudapali, and Dalki in Jharsuguda district.

Empowering Farmers with Better Resources

Phase III of Jeevika Samriddhi introduces innovative and sustainable solutions to tackle the challenges of rural agriculture. From pond restoration and solar pumps ensuring reliable irrigation to modern micro-irrigation methods optimizing water usage, the project familiarizes farmers on using advanced techniques like the System of Rice Intensification and the WADI model to revitalize barren lands, boosting crop yields sustainably.

With a focus on organic farming, practices such as the setting up of vermicompost tanks and bio manure to enhance soil fertility naturally are elucidated in detail to the farmers. Furthermore, the project supports agri-allied activities such as pisciculture, offering farmers additional avenues for income generation. By integrating fish farming with traditional agriculture, farmers can maximize land utilization while tapping into new markets and revenue streams.

Moreover, comprehensive training from experts and exposure visits empower farmers with knowledge in climate-smart agriculture practices and modern technological interventions. Together, these initiatives not only enhance agricultural productivity but also promote environmental sustainability and economic resilience within rural communities.

Reaping Bountiful Harvests

Today, farmers, who are part of the Jeevika Samriddhi, are engaged in cultivation round the year due to improved irrigation facilities which has reduced dependency on rains. In its third phase, installation of solar irrigation system in existing bore wells have augmented the irrigation infrastructure for the farmers. The implementation of solar-powered irrigation facilities supports farmers in cultivating a variety of hybrid vegetables, including leafy greens. The SRI method (System of Rice Intensification) of paddy cultivation and adoption of cash crops have increased the average crop productivity and has enhanced the monthly income of farmers, contributing to a 50% increment in monthly income for 77% of farmers associated with the project.

Shri. Manoranjan Nanda, Assistant Director of Horticulture, Jharsuguda, who has been closely associated with this project, remarked, “Jeevika Samridhhi is positively impacting a large number of farming households by introducing them to advanced agricultural practices as well as to the best practices in land and water management. I’m hopeful that the third phase would transform the agricultural landscape in Jharsuguda”.

Fields of Transformation

The impact of the Jeevika Samriddhi project has brought about profound transformations in the lives of farmers in Jharsuguda.

Manbodh Pradhan from Parmanpur village, shares his transformative journey through the implementation of System of Rice Intensification (SRI) method of paddy cultivation. “SRI reduced my input costs and increased my productivity, now I’m harvesting 51 quintals of paddy from 2 acres.”

Naresh Patel, another success story from Gudigaon village, acknowledges, “the training sessions on natural pest management and organic farming methods ensured the cultivation of a range of cash crops like ginger, chilly, coriander, bottle gourd and many more which is fetching very good returns.”

Towards a Greener Tomorrow

Through Jeevika Samriddhi, Vedanta Aluminium not only plants seeds but nurtures hope, transforming lives and landscapes alike. It is a beacon of hope for rural communities, a testament to the power of collaboration, and a promise of a brighter tomorrow. With perseverance and partnership, even the smallest seeds can grow into mighty trees of change.

These regions, known for their agricultural heritage, have grappled with economic difficulties stemming from factors like inadequate irrigation facilities, low productivity, and insufficient government support.

Consequently, many farmers and agricultural labourers from these areas seek refuge in urban centers such as Pune in search of better employment prospects. However, the transition from rural to urban life often brings with it an array of hardships. Migrant workers, driven by the hope for improved livelihoods, often encounter a harsh reality marked by low wages, substandard working conditions, a lack of social security, and limited access to fundamental necessities like healthcare and education.

In response to these challenges, Mindtickle, a leading organization, has undertaken a significant Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. This initiative is aimed at addressing the multifaceted problems faced by the Mahalunge community, a large village situated in the Mulshi Taluka of Pune district, Maharashtra, near the Mumbai-Bangalore highway, with a total of 1517 families residing.

Spherule Foundation, a Pune-based NGO renowned for its work in Education, Health, Women Empowerment, Livelihood, and Environment, is implementing this project on the ground.

Education, Women’s Livelihood, and Health: A Holistic and Integrated Approach

Under this integrated project, Mindtickle and the Spherule Foundation, a Pune-based NGO responsible for its implementation on the ground, have identified three core aspects aimed at uplifting the Mahalunge community: Education, Women’s Livelihood, and Health.

1. Education: Over the past two years, substantial efforts have been directed towards Mahalunge’s government school, Madhyamik Vidyalay. As part of these efforts, a full-time educator has been provided to the school, aimed at enhancing the quality of education. Moreover, a comprehensive Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) program has been initiated to ensure that students have access to clean and safe facilities. The project also encompasses awareness programs on vital topics such as gender equality, menstrual hygiene, and mental health, fostering holistic well-being among the students.

2. Women’s Livelihood: Empowering women is a cornerstone of this initiative. Spherule Foundation has been conducting training programs in various skills, including sewing, knitting, paper bag making, and sanitary napkin production. Recently, an important milestone was achieved as certificates of completion were distributed to women who successfully completed the tailoring course. These women are now poised to receive employment opportunities or business training, enabling them to establish a sustainable source of income. This not only empowers these women but also contributes to the economic growth of the entire community.

3. Health: In addition to its focus on education and women’s livelihood, the health component aims to promote preventive care and raise awareness within the community. A health camp has been established to provide health check-ups and screenings, facilitating the early detection of health issues and enabling timely interventions. By emphasizing preventive care, the project seeks to alleviate the burden of preventable diseases and foster a healthier, more resilient community. Furthermore, alongside the health camps, the project conducts informative health awareness sessions. These sessions cover topics of profound significance, including menstrual hygiene, mental health, and sanitation. By imparting knowledge and fostering awareness on these subjects, the initiative empowers community members to make informed health decisions, promoting overall well-being and contributing to a healthier and more informed community.

Impact Beyond Numbers

New Delhi (India), September 1: In the heart of Jharsuguda, the story of transformation and hope unfolds through Vedanta Aluminium’s ‘Jeevika Samriddhi’ project. The project’s emphasis on sustainable farming practices and improved irrigation systems has become a beacon of hope for farmers in this region. The success of the project can be gauged from the fact that even during the pandemic, it provided a steady source of income and opened avenues to directly sell farm produce through ‘Farm to Shop’ platforms through a robust supply chain model.

Transforming Lives and Empowering Communities

Arjun Naik, a farmer, from Gudigaon Village in Jharsuguda District, Odisha, assumed that year-round farming was next to impossible. “With water scarcity and health issues, life was a daily struggle for me as my family had to make a daily trek of around 2 km to fetch water which exhausted our energy and resources. Further, my health issues aggravated, adding to our woes, forcing me to stop working as a daily labourer which was my only means of income,” he mentions.

“It was during these testing times that Vedanta’s ‘Jeevika Samriddhi’ initiative became a glimmer of hope for us”, beams Arjun. “Both my wife and I, benefited from the training and irrigation system support provided by Vedanta and today, our farmland thrives with cash crops such as tomatoes, chillies, and sweet corn, ensuring a stable income. My wife, Kavita, is a happy woman who not only contributes effectively to household expenditures, but also takes pride in educating our children and managing my medical expenses.”

Naresh Patel, another success story, reflects a similar transformation. “Initially I was a conventional farmer who primarily grew paddy and a few vegetables, struggling to make ends meet. But everything changed from the moment I became a part of the ‘Jeevika Samriddhi’ project. The training sessions on natural pest management and organic farming methods gave me a larger perspective on sustainable agriculture and paved the way for evolving as an agricultural entrepreneur. Now, I cultivate a range of cash crops like ginger, chilly, coriander, bottle gourd and many more which is fetching very good returns,” Naresh attributes.

Arjun Naik and Naresh are just two among the 521 families whose lives have been transformed by the Jeevika Samriddhi project in the villages of Gudigaon, Keldamal and Siriapali.

Sowing the Seeds of Change

Vedanta Limited, Jharsuguda, initiated the first phase of this unique farm-based project involving 111 farmers on a pilot basis in one of the villages, which was completed in 2017. Following the stupendous success of the project, the second phase was launched covering 330 farming households in Jharsuguda.

To further fortify this initiative, Vedanta roped in agricultural scientists to train the farmers on advanced agriculture practices and sustainable methods of farming. Over 13,000 hours of training have been imparted to the farmers on areas such as crop planning & management, post-harvest management, Package of Practices (PoP), with more than 89% farmers benefiting from the sustainable agricultural practices.

Reaping Bountiful Harvests

Today, farmers, who are part of the project, are engaged in cultivation round the year due to improved irrigation facilities which has reduced dependency on rains. Moreover, adoption of cash crops has also increased, with 77% of farmers enhancing their monthly income by 50%.

Mr. Surendra Delki, Assistant Horticulture Officer, Kolibira Block, who has been closely associated with this project, adds, “Jeevika Samridhhi has positively impacted a large number of farming households by introducing them to advanced agricultural practices as well as to the best practices in land and water management. Today, more than 200 acres of farmland in this region are cultivated with high-value crops thereby ensuring a bountiful harvest all through the year.”

Promising a Greener Tomorrow

Now into its third operational phase, Vedanta’s ‘Jeevika Samridhhi’ project is set to broaden its scope to 3 more villages of 2 Gram Panchayats (Dalki & Parmanpur) in Jharsuguda District.

This third phase of the project focuses on orienting farmers about the adoption of climate-resilient agricultural techniques, establishing soil and water conservation structures, and introducing supplementary irrigation systems (such as solar and drip irrigation) to enhance reliable irrigation resources.

The program also aims to stimulate sustainable agriculture by refining crop management practices through Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and Integrated Nutrition Management (INM). Additionally, farmers will be familiarized with establishing market linkage through local institutions, community-based organizations, water user groups, farmer’s producer groups, village development committees, and similar avenues.

In a world where success is often measured in profits, Vedanta’s ‘Jeevika Samridhhi’ project tells a different tale. It’s a story of growth intertwined with the community’s well-being, a testament to the fact that true prosperity blooms when nurtured collectively.
