New Delhi, April 1 — Eden Gardens and Wankhede Stadium will not host matches of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, yet former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has expressed satisfaction with this decision. Ganguly stated that while he wishes to see more Test matches at Eden Gardens, he is also pleased that traditional format matches are being played at other centers across the country.

As per agency report, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced the schedule for the 2026-27 domestic season. Under this schedule, the matches against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy will not take place at traditional centers like Kolkata and Mumbai. Instead, these matches will be held from January 21 to February 25 in Nagpur, Chennai, Guwahati, Ranchi, and Ahmedabad.

Ganguly mentioned that it is always nice to see big Test matches at Eden Gardens. As an administrator and former player, he wishes for more matches to be held there. However, he noted that they recently hosted a Test against South Africa, followed by T20 World Cup matches and currently IPL matches are also being played.

He further stated that while everyone wants more matches at Eden, it is important to understand that other grounds should also get opportunities. There are many grounds in the country with better facilities that should also host international matches.

Guwahati has recently emerged as a Test center, having hosted its first Test in November 2025, and is set to host its second Test within a year. Additionally, a Test match was played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad last October. On the other hand, the last Test at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium was held in November 2024. According to the schedule, ODI matches will be played in Kolkata and Mumbai against Zimbabwe in early 2027, while a match against Sri Lanka is proposed in Delhi this December.

Ganguly emphasized that there are now good grounds and facilities available across the country. He cited cities like Chennai, Guwahati, and Ranchi as examples where it is nice to see Test matches being played. He believes it is essential to conduct matches at different grounds to spread cricket to every corner of the country, thereby expanding the reach of the sport.

Kolkata, May 14 — A police officer serving as an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) with Kolkata Police was arrested on Wednesday for his alleged involvement in a daring heist in which over Rs 2.66 crore was looted from a moving taxi. The incident took place in the Entally area of the city, as per agency report.

The robbery occurred on May 5 around 11:45 AM, when two employees of a private foreign exchange firm were en route to deposit a substantial sum of money at a government bank in the Park Circus area. They had boarded a taxi from SN Banerjee Road, unaware of the ambush that lay ahead.

According to officials, the ASI is believed to be the mastermind behind the planned heist. The two employees claimed that near the Kamarhati area, two unidentified individuals forced the taxi to stop, boarded the vehicle, and fled with the cash soon after.

Following the incident, Kolkata Police’s detective department launched a thorough investigation. With the arrest of the ASI, the total number of individuals detained in connection with the case has risen to four. Among those already arrested is an employee of the private firm, suggesting an internal link to the crime.

Police sources have confirmed that further inquiries are underway to uncover the full extent of the conspiracy and recover the stolen amount.

Kolkata, April 30 — A devastating fire at a budget hotel in the Machhuapatti area of central Kolkata claimed the lives of 14 people, including a woman and two children, late Tuesday evening. The incident, which took place at Rituraj Hotel near the Burrabazar locality, also left 13 others injured. Initial reports had suggested 15 fatalities, but Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma later confirmed the final death toll at 14 after verification.

The blaze erupted around 7:30 pm and raged through the hotel premises for nearly 10 hours before it was brought under control early Wednesday morning by firefighters. Ten fire tenders were deployed by the state’s Fire and Emergency Services Department, which struggled through the night to contain the flames. According to officials, there were 88 guests staying across the hotel’s 42 rooms at the time of the incident.

Authorities have yet to determine the exact cause of the fire. As per agency report, forensic experts have been dispatched to examine the scene, which has been sealed off for investigation. The presence of highly flammable materials inside the building is believed to have exacerbated the fire’s intensity, prompting Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to initiate a formal inquiry into the tragedy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased and Rs 50,000 for each injured person from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund. In a message shared by the Prime Minister’s Office, Modi described the loss of lives as deeply saddening and extended his wishes for the speedy recovery of the injured.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who confirmed the death toll at 14, said she personally oversaw the firefighting and rescue operations through the night. She stated that orders had been given for a thorough investigation into the incident. The Chief Minister emphasized that the presence of combustible substances inside the hotel contributed to the rapid spread of the fire and assured full support to the affected families.

A senior police officer stated that 11 of the deceased were male, with eight of them already identified. The victims also included a young boy, a girl, and a woman. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed by Kolkata Police to probe the incident and determine accountability.

Kolkata — The sit-in protest by junior doctors at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital continued for the 33rd day on Friday, following the alleged rape and murder of a female trainee doctor. The doctors are demanding justice and have extended their strike, expressing dissatisfaction with the state government's response.

After proposed talks with the West Bengal government collapsed on Thursday, the striking doctors have sent an email to President Droupadi Murmu, seeking her intervention in the matter. Copies of the email have also been sent to Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Health Minister J.P. Nadda. As of now, no response has been received from the President's office.

Despite heavy rainfall, the junior doctors maintained their protest outside Swasthya Bhawan, holding up tarpaulins to shield themselves from the rain while chanting slogans like "We want justice." Many doctors wore raincoats to continue the demonstration. Senior doctors and members of the public joined in support, while police maintained barricades around the area. Arrangements for the protesting doctors were made by local residents.

On Thursday night, following Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's press conference, the junior doctors addressed the media, stating, "We went to the state secretariat only to seek justice. The culprits should be punished to prevent such incidents in the future. We came here trusting the Chief Minister's office. We don't want power; we want justice. We have been on the streets for 33 days, and we are prepared to stay another 33 days if necessary."

Earlier on Thursday, the state secretariat had sent a letter to the protesters, proposing a discussion with the Chief Minister. Only 15 representatives were invited, and it was stipulated that the meeting would not be broadcast live. Despite this, 32 representatives arrived and were allowed entry. However, the government's refusal to permit live broadcasting led to a stalemate. Chief Minister Banerjee waited in the auditorium for nearly two hours, but the meeting did not proceed. She later held a press conference to clarify her position and apologized to the people of West Bengal.

"I apologize to the people of Bengal for not being able to find a solution even after three days," Banerjee said. "I forgive those who came to the state secretariat but did not participate in the meeting. I have endured much humiliation; my government has been insulted. Many misunderstandings and rumors have spread. If necessary, I am ready to resign. But they don't want justice; they want power. I hope the public understands this."

The doctors refuted her claims, insisting that their sole demand is justice for their deceased colleague and improved safety measures in the workplace. They emphasized that they are not seeking political power but are fighting for a cause that affects all medical professionals.

The ongoing stalemate has raised concerns about healthcare services in the state, as the strike continues to disrupt normal hospital operations. The junior doctors have vowed to persist with their protest until their demands are met.

Meanwhile, the state government faces increasing pressure to resolve the situation. With key healthcare services affected and public sentiment growing sympathetic toward the doctors, all eyes are on the administration's next move.

Surat: Following last week's coup in Bangladesh, Surat’s textile traders are closely monitoring the situation, especially those connected to the Kolkata market. A significant portion of goods sent from Surat to Kolkata are eventually shipped to Bangladesh by Kolkata traders. The instability in Bangladesh directly impacts these traders, creating ripples in Surat’s textile industry.

Parmeshwar Matoliya, a prominent businessman operating Swagat Synthetics at Rathi Palace on Ring Road, shared his insights on the situation. He expressed caution in predicting the future of the business under the current circumstances but remained hopeful about a quick normalization. Matoliya mentioned that a Kolkata-based partner had communicated with their Bangladeshi counterparts, indicating that trade might resume within the next couple of days.

The textile trade between Surat and Kolkata is multifaceted. Some Surat traders engage directly with Bangladeshi clients, while others supply goods to Kolkata traders, who then handle the exports to Bangladesh. Focusing on plain dyed cloth, Matoliya explained that Surat sends this product to various markets, where traders apply different treatments. In Kolkata and Jaipur, the dyed cloth is transformed into sarees and garments. Bengaluru traders prefer to print on the dyed cloth before selling, while in Mumbai, it’s utilized in the garment industry and sometimes exported.

Despite current challenges, the general sentiment among traders is optimistic. With Durga Puja approaching, the expectation of a good customer turnout offers a silver lining. Kolkata, Feb 15 (IANS) Actress-politician Mimi Chakraborty, who's the Trinamool Congress MP from Jadavpur in Kolkata, announced her decision to resign as a Lok Sabha member after meeting Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee here on Thursday.

Chakraborty has also expressed her desire to permanently move away from politics and concentrate on her acting career instead.

The actress-politician reached the Assembly premises on Thursday afternoon and complained to the Chief Minister against the behaviour meted out to her by the local leadership of her own party in her constituency.

Chakraborty also told the Chief Minister that she has no intention to contest the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.

“I have tendered my resignation to the Chief Minister and once she accepts it, I will go the national capital and submit the same to the Lok Sabha Speaker,” Chakraborty said after meeting the Chief Minister.

Recently, Chakraborty had resigned from two Parliamentary standing committees in which she was the representative of the Trinamool Congress. She had also stepped down from different organisational posts within her constituency.

Speaking about her resignation from the standing committees and organisational posts, Chakraborty said that some people tried to create a rumour that these resignations were meant to ensure her candidature for the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls.

“I personally feel now that politics is not an area suitable for me. People often get the licence to abuse you once you enter politics. Had I done anything wrong, my name would have been in the headlines.

"I haven't caused harm to anyone. I am not a politician. I do not want to be a politician. I just wanted to work for the people as an ordinary worker. I have never used abusive language against those belonging to the opposition camps,” she said.

Chakraborty also said that she wanted to resign as an MP in 2022.

“However, the Chief Minister had then prevented me from doing so,” she said.
