As per agency report, the Indian Navy launched the emergency medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) operation after receiving an alert from the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Mumbai during the night of March 20–21. The alert informed that four crew members aboard MV Heilan Star had suffered severe burns and were in urgent need of advanced medical attention.

Responding swiftly, the Navy diverted two of its ships, INS Vikrant and INS Deepak, from their existing deployments to assist in the mission. The rescued individuals were airlifted to INS Hansa in Goa and subsequently transferred to a civilian hospital for further treatment.

The Indian Navy’s prompt and effective response highlights its operational readiness and commitment to humanitarian missions in the region. The rescue operation, conducted under challenging conditions far from the coast, underscores India’s growing maritime capabilities and its role as a reliable responder in regional maritime emergencies.

Tripathi announced on Monday that India is set to finalize contracts for the procurement of 26 Rafale-M fighter jets and three additional Scorpene-class submarines, with an agreement expected to be signed soon. These acquisitions aim to bolster the Navy’s capabilities in maritime defense.

Speaking at a press briefing ahead of Navy Day, Admiral Tripathi highlighted that the government’s recent approval for two indigenous SSNs (nuclear-powered submarines) demonstrates confidence in India’s domestic shipbuilding and technological expertise. He also emphasized that 62 ships and one submarine are currently under construction as part of the Navy’s modernization efforts.

Admiral Tripathi revealed that several of these vessels will be inducted into service within the next year, with at least one ship being commissioned soon. “We have doubled our efforts to integrate advanced technologies into the Navy,” he said.

The deal for the Rafale-M, a naval variant of the fighter jet, and Scorpene submarines is anticipated to be finalized by next month. The Rafale-M jets will primarily be deployed aboard the indigenously built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, enhancing the Navy’s operational capabilities. The Defense Ministry had approved the acquisition of the Rafale-M jets from France in July last year.

Addressing concerns about Pakistan’s efforts to expand its maritime strength, Admiral Tripathi assured that the Indian Navy is well-prepared to counter any potential threats from neighboring nations.

During his visit, Vice Admiral Hammond met with Admiral R Hari Kumar, Chief of the Naval Staff of the Indian Navy. Their discussions centered on ways to enhance bilateral maritime cooperation through increased operational engagements, training exchanges, and information sharing.

The Australian Navy Chief also met with General Anil Chauhan, Chief of Defence Staff. Their talks focused on broader defense cooperation, including strengthening mutual trust, fostering closer ties between the two nations, and exploring possibilities for collaboration in niche technologies and the defense industry.

Vice Admiral Hammond's itinerary includes visits to the Southern Naval Command in Kochi and the Western Naval Command in Mumbai, where he will interact with respective commanders. Notably, he will also tour India's first indigenous aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, along with key defense establishments like the Integrated Simulator Complex Naval Dockyard in Mumbai and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL).

The visit comes after the Royal Australian Ship HMAS Warramunga's participation in the multinational exercise MILAN 2024 held in Visakhapatnam last month. He announced the successful completion of 100 days of 'Operation Sankalp,' a mission aimed at deterring anti-piracy, anti-missile, and anti-drone attacks in the region.

Admiral Kumar emphasized the Navy's commitment to ensuring the safety of maritime trade routes. He highlighted the deployment of ten warships under Operation Sankalp, acting as first responders to any potential threats. The Navy Chief also noted the importance of protecting Indian crew members working aboard foreign merchant ships, especially those targeted by Houthi rebels due to their links with Israel and Western nations.

The press conference shed light on several key developments. Admiral Kumar acknowledged the first successful ship hijacking by Somalian pirates since 2017, involving the Bulgarian-flagged MV Ruen. Thankfully, Operation Sankalp facilitated the rescue of the ship and its crew. Additionally, the Navy successfully foiled 35 piracy attempts and rescued a total of 102 personnel, including Indian, Pakistani, and Iranian citizens.

The enactment of the Piracy Act-2022 was also highlighted. This legislation empowers the Indian Navy to board, search, and seize pirate vessels, bolstering their ability to combat piracy in the region. Admiral Kumar concluded by reiterating the Navy's unwavering commitment to maintaining a safe and secure maritime environment for all. The Navy's swift and decisive actions under Operation Sankalp serve as a testament to their dedication to safeguarding India's maritime interests.

According to the Navy, it will be a technically advanced uniform fabric.

The Navy said, "Specifications of the new Anti-fungal, Anti-Microbial and Anti-bacterial fabric are specially developed for tropical conditions with improved moisture mgmt tech and higher whiteness index lasting multiple washing cycles."

For supply of this technically advanced uniform fabric for the Navy, a MoU has been signed between the Indian Navy and M/s Arvind Limited for, the officials said.

Earlier some newly designed uniform items were introduced in the Indian Navy. The uniform items were displayed during the Naval Commanders Conference at New Delhi.

The newly designed uniform items are meant for enhanced comfort, hygiene and functionality. These include high absorption T-shirts, camouflage cap and jacket, high ankle shoes, and National Civil Dress for Messes/ functions were displayed, the Ministry of Defence said.

In December 2023 the Indian Navy had unveiled a new design for Admirals' epaulettes, drawing inspiration from the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. With the feeling of taking pride in one's heritage, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the Indian Navy is now going to name its ranks in line with Indian traditions.

In his address at the Navy Day celebrations at Sindhudurg in Maharashtra on December 4, PM Modi expressed happiness that the epaulettes donned by the Naval officers will now highlight the heritage and legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

The royal seal of the Maratha ruler has been brought in the new epaulettes which has been replaced in place of the 'Nelson Ring' of the British Raj.

The new design is octagonal. It symbolises the eight directions, which reflects the all-round long-term vision of the Army. It has a sword which shows the Navy's objective of winning wars through dominance and overcoming every challenge. There is also a telescope which symbolises vision, foresight and keeping an eye on the weather in the changing world, officials added.

The 'Sailors Rank' of British rule has been reviewed due to which more than 65,000 sailors will now get a new rank.

Earlier, there was a Red Cross symbol on the Naval flag. This was the St. George's Cross, which was part of the British flag -- the Union Jack. St. George's Cross was a symbol of a Christian saint and warrior.

The ship 'MV Lila Norfolk' was taken over early on Friday by around 5-6 pirates when it was on a voyage from Port Du Aco in Brazil to Khalifa Bin Salman Port in Bahrain, as it was around 550 km off the Somalia coast.

Responding swiftly to the distress call, warship INS Chennai was diverted from her anti-piracy patrol to the spot and it intercepted the hijacked ship around 3.15 p.m. in the Arabian Sea.

The elite Marine Commandos have boarded the MV Lila Norfolk and initiated the sanitisation operations.

Prior to the operation, the Liberian-flag vessel was kept under continuous surveillance using Maritime Patrol Aircraft, helicopters and Predator MQ9B.

Early on Friday, the hijacked ship had sent an SOS to the UK Maritime Trade Operations portal indicating 5-6 armed persons had boarded it late on Thursday.

This was the third incident of its kind in the high seas on the country's west coast in the past one month or with the Indian Navy rising to the occasion with a rescue and relief operation. On December 23, 2023, another Liberian-flagged oil tanker ‘MV Chem Pluto’ with 21 Indian crew was targeted in a drone attack, followed by a similar attack on a Gabon-flagged crude oil carrier, ‘MV Saibaba’ on Dec. 24 with 25 Indians on board, but there were no casualties in both the incidents.

Meanwhile, 'MV Chem Pluto' (Liberian Flag Chemical/Oil Tanker) carrying 21 Indian and one Vietnamese crew, earlier reported as attacked by a suspected drone on December 23, reached Mumbai and anchored safely at the Outer Anchorage, officials said.

The MoD said that on its arrival, the Indian Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal team inspected the vessel to make a preliminary assessment of the type and nature of attack.

Analysis of the area of attack and debris found on the ship points towards a drone attack. However, further forensic and technical analysis will be required to establish the vector of attack, including type and amount of explosive used, officials added.

A joint investigation by various agencies has commenced on completion of the analysis by the Navy's Explosive Ordnance Team.

MV Chem Pluto has been cleared for further operation by its company-in-charge at Mumbai, officials added.

The MoD said that this ship is scheduled to undergo mandatory checks by the various inspecting authorities before undertaking Ship to Ship (STS) transfer of cargo. This is likely to be followed by docking and repairs of the damaged portion of MV Chem Pluto.

Western Naval Command's Maritime Operations Centre is actively monitoring the situation in close coordination with Coast Guard and all concerned agencies, officials added.

They are likely to meet senior officials in PMO, Defence Ministry, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar, NSA Ajit Doval, Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane, Adm R. Hari Kumar and Chief of Navy and Air Force Chief Marshal V.R, Chaudhari.

This visit, coming after Prime Minister Modi’s visit to France in July this year where he was the chief guest for the Bastille Day Parade, assumes significance for the sale of 26 Rafale aircraft for the Indian Navy.

During the visit, discussions took place between PM Modi and French President Macron for sale of these aircraft under a G to G agreement IAF had bought 36 aircraft as fly away for Rs 60,000 crore, resulting in per aircraft cost of Rs 1600 crore.

However, base cost of aircraft was close to Rs 800 crore, rest being for India's specific enhancements, training, simulators and spares. Indian expectation is that 26 Naval aircraft should not cost more than Rs 20,000 crore or Euro 2.2 Bn. French projected cost is well above 3Bn or Rs 30,000 crore, a premium of 50 per cent, which can’t be justified given more than 99 per cent commonality between the air and naval version.
