Chandigarh, May 30 – A tragic explosion at a firecracker manufacturing and packaging unit in Punjab’s Sri Muktsar Sahib district has claimed the lives of five people and left nearly 30 others injured. The incident occurred late Thursday night around 1 a.m. in the Lambi area, according to police sources.

As per agency report, the blast took place in a two-storey factory situated along the Singhawali-Kotli road, where migrant workers were employed. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Jaspal Singh confirmed that the injured have been admitted to various hospitals, including AIIMS Bathinda, and most are reported to be out of danger.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dr. Akhil Chaudhary stated that the explosion occurred in a room of the factory’s construction section, causing the roof to collapse. Several workers were trapped under the debris, prompting an immediate rescue operation by local authorities upon receiving the alert.

Preliminary findings suggest that the blast may have been triggered by materials used in firecracker production, but the exact cause will be confirmed only after a detailed investigation and forensic analysis.

DSP Jaspal Singh mentioned that around 40 to 50 employees were present at the time of the incident, with several reportedly asleep on the premises. When asked about the legality of the unit’s operations, SSP Chaudhary said that the relevant department is currently verifying the necessary permits and documentation.

The explosion has raised concerns over safety standards and regulatory oversight in firecracker manufacturing units in the region.

Amritsar, May 14 — Pakistan handed over Border Security Force (BSF) jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw to India on Wednesday, 21 days after he was captured near the international border in Punjab. The handover took place at the Attari-Wagah border crossing in the presence of security officials from both sides.

As per agency report, Shaw was returned at 10:30 am at the Joint Check Post in Attari, directly across from Pakistan's Wagah border. A photo released by the BSF shows Shaw with a beard, mustache, and unkempt hair, dressed in a green, round-neck t-shirt.

BSF officials stated that Shaw had inadvertently crossed into Pakistani territory on the night of April 23 during an operational duty in the Ferozepur sector around 11:50 pm. He was then detained by the Pakistan Rangers.

Following his return, Shaw is set to undergo a full medical examination and counseling session. He will also face a debriefing by BSF officials, who will question him regarding his time in Pakistani custody. Officials confirmed that Shaw, a member of the 24th BSF Battalion, will not immediately return to active duty. He will instead participate in an internal investigation by the Punjab Frontier unit of BSF to assess the circumstances of the incident and identify any lapses.

The BSF confirmed that the repatriation was conducted peacefully in accordance with established protocols. Regular flag meetings and continued communication between the BSF and Pakistan Rangers were credited for facilitating Shaw’s return.

The jawan was part of the 'Kisan Guard' unit assigned to protect Indian farmers working near the border fence. According to sources, Shaw misjudged the boundary line and had rested under a tree near the border when he was apprehended by Pakistani forces.

Shaw hails from Rishra in Hooghly district, West Bengal. During his detention, his wife had appealed to both BSF authorities and the media for information on his whereabouts and called for his swift release, especially in light of the recent military tensions between India and Pakistan following the Pahalgam terrorist attack and subsequent Operation Sindoor.

Chandigarh/Amritsar, May 13 — At least 14 people have died across five villages in Punjab's Amritsar district after allegedly consuming illicit liquor, according to officials. The deaths were reported from the villages of Bhangali, Patalpuri, Marari Kalan, and Therewal. The tragedy has led to the arrest of seven individuals, including the main accused.

As per agency report, police have confirmed that six others are currently hospitalized due to complications arising from the consumption of the spurious liquor. Investigations revealed that methanol, a toxic industrial chemical, was used to produce the illicit alcohol and had been purchased in bulk through online platforms.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expressed outrage over the incident, stating that those responsible would not be spared. In a public message, he referred to the deaths as "murders" rather than accidental deaths.

Amritsar Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sahni confirmed the death toll and noted that most victims were daily wage workers. Medical teams have been deployed across the affected villages to conduct door-to-door screening for anyone who may have consumed the toxic liquor. Even individuals not exhibiting symptoms are being urged to undergo hospital checkups as a precaution.

The deaths came to light on Monday night, prompting swift police action. Deputy Inspector General (Border Range) Satinder Singh stated that seven people had been arrested, including the key accused Prabhjeet Singh, along with Kulbir Singh, Sahib Singh, Gurjant Singh, and Ninder Kaur.

Authorities disclosed that Prabhjeet Singh had acquired 50 liters of methanol, which he diluted and sold in two-liter pouches across local communities. Further interrogation revealed that Sahib Singh had placed the online order for the methanol and helped distribute it.

District and police officials, including SSP Maninder Singh from Jalandhar Rural Police, visited the affected areas and met with the families of the victims. They assured full support and assistance to those impacted.

A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Excise Act. Efforts are ongoing to trace and confiscate all distributed packets of the illicit brew to prevent further harm.

New Delhi, April 27 – Around 272 Pakistani nationals have exited India through the Attari-Wagah border crossing over the past two days, as tensions between India and Pakistan continue to escalate following the terrorist attack in Pahalgam. An official confirmed that more Pakistani citizens are expected to leave soon, particularly those whose short-term visa validity expires on Sunday.

As per agency report, India had directed Pakistani nationals holding short-term visas to leave the country after the April 22 terrorist attack that killed 26 people in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam region. The final deadline for South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) visa holders to leave was set for April 26, while those on medical visas were granted until April 29.

The categories of Pakistani citizens required to leave by Sunday include those holding visas for business, film, journalism, transit, conferences, mountaineering, study, tourism, pilgrimage, and group tours. However, those with long-term, diplomatic, or official visas have not been asked to depart.

According to officials, 191 Pakistani nationals left India via the Attari-Wagah crossing on April 25, while 81 more departed on April 26. Simultaneously, 629 Indian citizens, including 13 diplomats and officials, returned to India from Pakistan over the past two days — 287 on April 25 and 342 on April 26.

It was also noted that some Pakistanis might have exited India by air, though direct flights between India and Pakistan are currently unavailable. Those individuals would likely have traveled via third countries.

Officials highlighted that Maharashtra had the highest number of Pakistani nationals on short-term visas, with about 1,000 residents instructed to leave. Maharashtra Minister Yogesh Kadam stated that these individuals were asked to exit immediately. Overall, Maharashtra hosts around 5,050 Pakistani citizens, mostly on long-term visas, with concentrations in Nagpur (2,450), Thane (1,100), Jalgaon (390), Navi Mumbai (290), Pimpri-Chinchwad (290), Amravati (120), and Mumbai (15). Authorities revealed that the whereabouts of 107 Pakistani nationals in Maharashtra are currently untraceable.

In Telangana, Police Chief Jitender reported that at least 208 Pakistani nationals reside in the state, primarily in Hyderabad, with 156 on long-term visas, 13 on short-term visas, and 39 holding medical or business visas.

In Kerala, 104 Pakistani nationals were reported, with 99 holding long-term visas. Five on tourist or medical visas have already left the country. Madhya Pradesh had about 228 Pakistani nationals, many of whom have already returned, while Odisha has at least 12 Pakistani citizens who have been directed to leave within the stipulated time.

In Goa, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant confirmed that three Pakistani nationals on short-term visas were asked to depart. Similarly, in Gujarat, seven Pakistani nationals were present — five in Ahmedabad and one each in Bharuch and Vadodara — and they have either left or were scheduled to leave by Sunday. Gujarat also hosts 438 Pakistani nationals on long-term visas, including Hindus who have applied for Indian citizenship.

Uttar Pradesh Police Chief Prashant Kumar stated that the repatriation process for all Pakistani nationals ordered to leave the state has been completed, except for one individual who is scheduled to depart on April 30.

Home Minister Amit Shah personally contacted the chief ministers of all states and union territories on Friday, urging them to ensure that no Pakistani citizen remains in India beyond the designated deadlines.

Chandigarh, March 14 – In a swift operation, Punjab Police successfully rescued a seven-year-old boy who was kidnapped for a ransom of ₹1 crore in Ludhiana’s Khanna area. The main accused was killed in a police encounter in Patiala district, while two other suspects were arrested. As per agency report, three police personnel were injured in the encounter.

The incident occurred on Wednesday evening when two motorcycle-borne kidnappers abducted Bhavkirat Singh while he was playing outside his home in Sihan Daud village. His grandfather, Gurjant Singh, immediately reported the abduction to the police.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Patiala Range, Mandeep Singh Sidhu, stated that multiple teams were formed to track the kidnappers and rescue the child. The suspects were first spotted in Malerkotla, leading to crucial leads in the investigation.

The operation was closely monitored by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav. The kidnappers had demanded a ransom of ₹1 crore from the victim’s family.

The breakthrough came when police tracked the main accused, Jaspreet Singh, near Mandaur village in Nabha, Patiala. When officers attempted to intercept his SUV, he opened fire on the police, injuring three personnel. In retaliation, Jaspreet was fatally wounded and later succumbed to his injuries.

During the search of the SUV, police found the kidnapped child unharmed and safely rescued him. The two arrested accomplices were identified as Harpreet Singh and Ravi Bhinder, both residents of Amargarh in Malerkotla district.

DGP Gaurav Yadav announced a cash reward of ₹10 lakh for the police teams involved in the rescue operation, which included personnel from Khanna, Patiala, and Malerkotla police.

Later, Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema personally escorted Bhavkirat Singh back home and reunited him with his parents in Khanna.

Tarn Taran, March 1: In a tragic incident, five members of a family lost their lives after the roof of their house collapsed in Pandori Gola village of Tarn Taran district, Punjab, early Saturday morning.

The deceased include a couple and their three children. According to initial reports, the family was asleep when the accident occurred. Relatives of the victims informed the media that the roof was made of wooden beams, and a structural shift is believed to have caused its collapse.

Four of the deceased have been identified as Gurvinder Singh, Amarjeet Kaur, Eku, and Gurlal Singh. Upon receiving information about the incident, the police from Tarn Taran Sadar police station arrived at the scene and sent the bodies for post-mortem examination. Authorities have initiated an investigation into the circumstances leading to the collapse.

Chandigarh, February 18 – At least five passengers lost their lives, and more than 24 others sustained injuries when a private bus fell into a canal in Punjab’s Faridkot district on Tuesday morning.

The tragic accident occurred around 8 AM on the Faridkot-Kotkapura road when the bus, carrying 36 passengers, was traveling from Muktsar to Amritsar.

According to initial reports, the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to plunge 10 feet off a bridge into the canal below. Some eyewitnesses claimed that the bus first collided with a truck before veering off the bridge.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Pragya Jain confirmed the fatalities and injuries, stating that 26 passengers were admitted to Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital in Faridkot, while two critically injured individuals were referred to another hospital in Amritsar. Among the injured, one passenger lost a limb due to the impact of the crash.

Authorities have set up a help desk at the hospital to assist the victims' families. The police are investigating the exact cause of the accident.

Chandigarh, December 5 – A day after surviving an assassination attempt, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Sukhbir Singh Badal carried out voluntary service at Takht Kesgarh Sahib in Punjab’s Rupnagar district on Thursday under heavy security arrangements.

The former Deputy Chief Minister, who is under Z+ security cover, arrived at Anandpur Sahib surrounded by a protective cordon. Dressed in the blue uniform of a 'sewadar' and holding a spear, Badal stationed himself at the gurudwara’s entrance, fulfilling the religious penance mandated by the Akal Takht.

The directive was issued as a spiritual punishment for the errors committed by the SAD government and party during its 2007-2017 tenure. The Akal Takht instructed Badal to serve as a 'sewadar' for two days each at the Golden Temple in Amritsar, Takht Kesgarh Sahib, Takht Damdama Sahib, Darbar Sahib in Muktsar, and Fatehgarh Sahib.

On Wednesday, during his second day of penance at the Golden Temple, Badal narrowly escaped when a former Khalistani terrorist attempted to shoot him at close range. His life was spared as plainclothes policemen apprehended the attacker, causing the shot to miss and hit a wall instead.

Ahead of Badal’s visit to Takht Kesgarh Sahib, the Rupnagar police implemented extensive security measures. Senior Superintendent of Police Gulneet Singh Khurana stated that a foolproof security arrangement was in place, with plainclothes officers deployed and remaining vigilant.

Badal was joined by other SAD leaders and party workers during his service at the gurudwara. The incident has raised concerns about security arrangements for prominent political figures in Punjab.

Six polling booths recorded over 80% voter turnout, with Manguwal booth achieving an impressive 89.5% while none in 2019 election. Furthermore, 38 out of 173 model booths—including green, pink, youth, physically weak, and disabled booths—experienced an eye-catching average increase of 8.46% in voter turnout. 

In contrast, other constituencies in Punjab reported a decline in voter turnout: Sangrur by 7.77%, Ferozpur by 5.45%, and Fatehgarh Sahib by 5.16%. The Green Election campaign in Anandpur Sahib effectively countered this trend, underscoring the initiative’s positive impact. As a result, four assemblies out of nine witnessed/recorded more turnout than 2019 election.
